Microsoft do web hosting now??!

This might be old news but this seems goood and just found it. free domain and hosting space. Anyone tried it? pros and cons?

They probably intended it for business users who us Office.

I've never had a website - never needed one. However, a Microsoft one might be exciting.

If Microsoft host you on their servers, then I bet the security is good. Let's be honest - they want to attract businesses. The last thing they want is a bunch of 14 year old Turkish kids Larging their load all over the place.

Might be a safe haven for a site.

The hosting of the sites on Microsoft servers is invisible to visitors in terms of the URL. The site retains whatever domain name it has. Just the IP gives the game away.

They are mainly targeting one thing: taking care that Google isn't going out of control with their web business ...
As they try to get up on the competition again by buying Yahoo.

They realize that they waited to long with their web ideas, so now they fire out of all their cannons ...

Attacking Adobe with XPS vs PDF and Silverlight vs Flash, Attacking Apple with Zune and Zune Shop, attacking Google with everything that they believe they can do at least on the same level.

Having said that - some sites have their original IP, but the pages are served by Microsoft. There are many sites that all have the exact same Microsoft server IP.

With so many of these sites having the exact same IP, you cannot wack the IP to get to the site, you just get the server.

Too much excitement for me.

Inside these servers are tons of sites and also Microsoft chuck in loads of their stuff too - like MSN and Messenger stuff too. All chucked into the same server. It's great, each server I go to has like a surprise inside it - you don't know what is in there until you take a peek - ie instead of finding a website, you find tons of stuff.

On your server, there are the likes of barclaysonlinebankplc and barc-online-london. Theoretically, people cannot access them directly - but I can see their real IP via the Microsoft server.

"James Kim" of San Jose, California set this up in 2006 - he's clearly done nothing with it since.

the domain name thing caught my eye lol, thinking of signing up, but the IP thing is a big down for me

you often share the IP unless you fork out considerably more to get a dedicated machine instead of a virtual host based webhosting.

You don't get a MS domain name - well, I haven't seen anyone with one yet. You have to use your own, or buy a domain name.

The free package gives you 10GB of bandwidth for - isn't that somewhat generous?
