just got the mag can agree with some of the entrys, number 1 i didnt rate that high. the game has no depth and only 3 stages.

They're comparing games of different ages... sega rally was from 1997: I wouldn't even call it retrogaming, since it should still run fine on XP with modern hardware. Such a list makes even less sense since they are mixing subgenres and very different games by doing so.
Anyway, even in the same years and looking at simulations only, if you compare features, graphics and gameplay with other games Sega Rally wasn't surely the best one (Screamer 2 & Rally, IndyCar Racing 2 & Nascar Racing 2 and Gran Turismo come to mind).

ah but as the console its made for is no longer sold / supported (outside of home brew) that enables it to qualify as retro (prolly came out on pc but i dont do driving games)

To be honest, even though the arcade machine was good for its age, sega rally is somewhat pants even when compared to other psx games of the same year (DC performance instead is actually comparable to a PS2 due to its well thought architecture).
Anyway, the point is that they are comparing different subgenres for different platforms of different ages... the top 5 alone is quite bizarre.
