Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Unity 2.0.2 has been released
It's primary a bugfix release.

http://unity3d.com/unity/whats-new/unity-2.0I can't help myself but bugfix releases always remind me of a strange situation. On the one side i love them because they make existing features work and useable. On the other side i'm always amazed how many bugs show up in todays software and how you still can work with software whilst they have those. Operating systems are really fascinating in this respect.
I don't have a mac and it kills me not to get to mess with unity3d. It seems awesome.
ps makes me wonder about hackintosh but seems wrong to do it.
Hackintosh would be great considering the often annoying hardware issues which can show up on a mac (maybe too expensive, crappy gfx cards on most models, no mac available at all) but i don't think this will work out well as Unity makes heavy usage of the system and the 3d stuff and often these hacks only work to a certain degree for less complex stuff. Beside of that it would be illegal.
its supports c4d native format oh my god a dream come true
Even better it supports FBX and so a whole range of modellers. :O)
Unity is a sweet piece of work. Unfortunately it's not that great on my Mac Mini.
Yep the shadows aren't working anymore, no reflection/refraction water, reduced image effects,... but still most of the stuff is working. Hoping for the promised shadow solution for low range cards in the near future.
unlikely as apple will stop selling the macmini so the lowest you can get is an X3100 which works with it.
Nope not unlikely and hopefully coming soon as it makes a lot of sense for client work and beside of supporting a large amount of already existing systems there are still a lot of pc notebooks coming with GMA950. But were did you hear that they will stop selling the MacMini?
There are PC notebooks, right.
But Unities "main market" is still Apple and I don't assume that this is going to change soon as they are still on the way to get a Windows version of the tools done.
Different apple rumor pages claimed already half a year ago that the current iteration will be the last one due to different reasons they mentioned. So far, they had a correctness ratio of 100% when it came to apple hardware products.
The most simple one is the fact that the MacMini unlike the MacBook still didn't get a Santa Rosa upgrade even thought all others got it months ago.
With its amount of 64MB VRAM I'm not sure if it will even be able to go to the end of 10.5 before its "too weak", but it surely won't be able to run 10.6 anymore due to missing features on the CPU to DVI adapter (also called Intel GMA xxx). The most impacting one with the missing hardware support for HD video decoding which the X3100 has.
The other reason is that a 20" iMac costs 50% more than the "usable" version of the mac mini while beeing a magnitude more powerfull and offering more style which is important to "Macies" :)
Uhm you have noticed that Unity publishes for Windows too and that due to the win/osx market shares this alone for the webplayer means primary windows?
Rumours also said that we'll see a MacNano instead of a MacMini.
Anyway technically it's possible, even on my 9200er, it's more a priority/time thing.
I am aware that the Pro version deploys to windows. But until recently they didn't have DX so I didn't even see it as a potential market. Right now it seems like the DX still has much potential left for optimizing.
Until that is done, its unimportant how well it scales down, as neither intel nor pre-SM2 generation ATI have drivers that usefull work with OpenGL
Why do i get the impression that you not really know what you're talking about?!
LOL
its £821 for pro licence, id want to have a team of people to work on a major game before id pay that much for an engine/sdk. its very impressive but at my level i think i could make simpler games that are just as fun in blitzmax using one of the lower cost engines, i must say if the engine can really read c4d files directly, it would almost have me spending my cash but id have to see it working and it would have to be very stable.
As im buying a macbook pro for my sound engineering job it is an option now though
I just had go on the demo of Avert Fate and it is amazing. I love those effect such as bump mapping, bloom, blur and so on. There was massive Robot boss that I had to fight as it feel like MGS 1 :)
Impressive
oh? you dont get to kill the robot thats lame!
it looks about as good as halo but runs better and loads real fast. like the gun that charges up then lets out a burst of energy that destorts the air around the fire like heat haze.
I think its the sdk bit that sells it
Is there demo that you can try coding and making games stuff or you have buy it to do coding and making games?
thank you. I have download it and now I got the unity-2.0.2.dmg files and how do I install in?
Assuming your using a Mac, just double-click on the DMG file, and then on the Unity program within - or drag it somewhere.
If your trying to run it on a Windows machine, then your out of luck.
oh bummer...Do you when they will release window Unity Indie Trial?
Do you when they will release window Unity Indie Trial?
Well they told me two years ago that they wanted to get a Windows version, and they've been advertising for a Window GUI programmer on their website for at least six months, so if they don't have the programmer they need yet, I wouldn't expect it any time soon.
As Gabriel said a windows IDE won't be available this soon but it also will come for sure. First there will be updates with further enhancements and new features beeing released.
IF I am buying Mac laptop just for unity 3d and which Mac laptop should I get?
If you can afford it i would go for the Mac Book Pro and there for the smallest version. The middle version only if you want/need those 256MB for the gpu which enables more texturemem and better performance at higher resolutions and aa.
If that's too much then get the smallest Mac Book configuration.
The Mac Book Air doesn't make this much sense at the moment.

Or get an iMac, which is MacBook Pro not Portable but which less thermal problems and a nice, large screen to work on which isn't that unimportant when you design your world within the editor.
developing with unity on a macbook is pointless. It has an Intel X3100 in, thats even by "low end system" standards still below the "minimum" if you look at low end gaming specs.
Nope, again wrong.
It's not pointless because it depends on what you're after. Which effects do you want to work with and what are you targeting for. There are quite some Unity developers around with worse than that chip. You can do a lot also with these chips and make nice looking things and obviously the other parts like gamecode or physics aren't affected in any way by this. At the latest you'll have to deal with them when you release something as we're not living in a 8800GT only world.
Thing about the Avert fate demo is that if you take away the shaders that almost any shader based engine can do with ease. There really isn't much to it other than a generic FPS clone.
Having said that, Unity is obviously a lot more than the demo. But these days your not really limited much by what you can do with shaders, so long as your artists can use them.
It's how efficient and compatible the rendering engine is. Still it is a nice demo, but I was disappointed that they had baked shadows in places they could easily have been dynamic.
Personally i don't like the demo a lot. It has some nice effects but that's it. The gfx stlye and the level design is not my style and it isn't a convincing gamedemo either but well it's just a free little demo so what should you moan a lot about it. As you've said Unity's power comes with all the componets (the editor, the scenegraph, the physics integration and so on).
By the way how far are you with Flow?
