Vavle releasing Steamworks

http://steampowered.com/v/index.php?area=news&id=1423Seems interesting enough. Appears to basically be a toolset to make your game to work fully with Steam's built-in functions and what-not from what I'm perceiving.
Whether or not using the thing means your clients will actually need Steam or not I've yet to find out, albeit I'm guessing with a 97% chance that it indeed will.
Regardless, something to think about; if I ever get a game or tech demo up and running I may toy with it locally to see what I can do.
(VoIP is always nice)
The auto-updating feature alone would be very cool.
This is like the most important and exciting thing I've read in quite awhile. I'll definitely be using this.
I don't believe for a second they'll let just any old person sell their game through steam.
So at best, they allow anyone to use this, but all it does is install the game on Steam after you've sold it through your website.
And at worst, this is just a PR announcement, and really what they're doing is informing all the big shareware makers that they're ready to deal, but all the little guys will be turned away unless they've got something really impressive. And both will likely be handing over a hefty sum (50%) for any games marketed through the service, just like RealArcade.
This sounds like copyright infringement to me. I will have to have a word with them.

This aspect is cleared up on their webpage:
Steamworks is not engine specific and will work with any underlying technology. Whether you're publishing your games on Steam or not, Steamworks lets you take advantage of Steam features in retail products.
meh, I just don't like steam. I'm one of those people that likes to keep my system clean without any annoying services and have so far avoided games that use Steam and Ageia because of their annoying little taskbar background apps mostly.
Steam is okay - you can set it to not auto-run - ie it doesn't use any resources or created any services.
I cracked last night... downloaded steam and the Orange box.

That's not what Valve is doing. I see it more like Armadillo etc. Plus if they did that then Lights of Dreams would show up on Steam...
Yeah, Evak, Steam's not as bad as it used to be, I have it set to not open until I run a game. zero resources. it's quite a nite little integration now. I used to be totally against it.
Saying that, i've not played any PC game for months now. Even sold my GFX card recently lol.
Whoa Leadwerks! a Ron Paul fan! Cool!
Interesting options that seems to be going to be offered there.
Not only because it simplifies some of the things, but also because it gives "natural" spreading on a potentially far better known plattform than the dozens of arcade platforms or the like (I still struggle over new ones every now and then ?! )
Steam is Windows only (works by wine though), a software system designed to give valve control over you.
