Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Unofficial BlitzNews 2

Hi, I've finished the next issue a little early. I thought I'd announce it here once more. Don't worry, I'm not going to post here every month and annoy you. That's it now, anyone who doesn't know now probably isn't interested anyway.

Good work again, Mark. I was interested to read Skid's work log, which I would have otherwise missed.

Don't worry about being critical. It's good to say what you think and generates some good arguments, ahem... I mean discussions.

Wow you have been busy! Great newsletter (loads of content) and thanks for posting about the framework, that was a nice surprise. I also missed Skidracer's worklog so that was good.

It really seems that your Me PC doesn't run much. Did Holiday Bonus run on your Me PC properly? (I know you didn't try Fairway). I really hope it did as I made a lot of framework changes to get it running on the Me test PC that I have here.

Interesting to read about skids exprience with gcc on linux (;-)

good tutorial on types. It did actually throw me abit though, cause I didn't even know we had pointers in blitz3D, so that's new to me. It looks very complicated for a new user.

Otherwise, yeah, good work.

Hi Grey Alien, yes Holiday Bonus ran perfectly on ME. Fairway would have too, almost certainly.

Hi Nomen Luni, actually now I think it's better to restrain myself and be polite and just offer some constructive criticism. I feel better this way too!

Thanks for the mention!

markcw: Excellent thanks for the info. Good to know my framework works on your lower-end test rig.

Nice ... I missed alot of this .. keep up the good work and thanks for the mention too.

I’m still not sure about how kicking is used or how to kill the other team, I just seemed to make mincemeat of my players every time I kicked a frogman.

I wouldn't recommend kicking an exploding alien ;)

Thanks for the mention :D

Hi mark,
good work, and thanks for mention my asteroids WIP - that was really a nice surprise :)

I really appreciate your dedication to provide us the Reports from the Backend - what an interesting reading.

Please keep on,
Sergio.

P.S.
an issue you wrote about Asteroids is already fixed - the top speed of the ship. For the circular blast and 3D text yes you're right... ;-)
I find good to read some critics. It's the only way I have to improve the game. Thanks again !

good work mark.

the only thing is as Chalk Physics didnt run correctly on your machine do you think you should have reviewed it? What i would have done was contact Kuneko and try and sort out why your machine failed to run it correctly. (Your graphics card if you ask me.) it runs fine on all of my machines including an old laptop. I think reviewing a game that wasnt really playable on your machines was a bit pointless and gives a bad inpresion of a game while not brilliant is quite interesting.

I get a 404 not found

The page has bright pink text for me, and I'm not going to find out why. I give it a 2/10 :P

Other than that, it's not bad at all. Not perfect, but I can see you are getting the hang of this. Good luck!
Oh, and thanks for the effort :)

Hi semar, thanks. I'll edit the bit about top speed then.

Hi Pete, yes you have a point, perhaps if the game doesn't run properly I shouldn't review it at all, or perhaps I should just write a summary but no actual review or score. I'm not sure what to do really so suggestions are welcome.

If anyone with a game reviewed wants it edited or completely removed then post here or on the newsletter page. I don't mind taking a review or two out.

I think when a game fails on Gametunnel they simply write N/A as their score.

well i guess the second of your setups is a laptop? Id try updating the drivers for your graphics card I can't find much info on the sis 650 but even the best sis igps are some of the worst igps on the market. still im surprised it crashed on the ati 7000?

I guess he should display a min spec on his site?

but i think if it doesnt run on your system, you should not review it. just have a block of text explaining what its about.

Don't worry, I'm not going to post here every month and annoy you.

Actually, I hope you do. Or at least bump this thread every month.

I would rather not have to keep checking for an update, it is better that you announce it.

I agree. Announce away.

Well I have removed the scores for games that didn't run on my PCs.

but i think if it doesnt run on your system, you should not review it. just have a block of text explaining what its about.

As for this I need at least a second opinion, preferably from one of the people who made those games.

people still use windows ME?

http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-477938.html

Windows XP 82.02%
Windows 2000 4.31%
Mac OS 3.95%
Windows Vista 3.74%
MacIntel 2.51%
Windows 98 1.24%
Linux 0.70%
Windows NT 0.69%
Windows ME 0.62%
Unknown 0.05%

Kinda makes those Mac ads look a little ridiculous, huh?

I made Chalk Physics. I only tested it on XP with similar spec machines so I'm not too sure what the minumum specs are. I appreciate the mention, even if it didn't work for you ;)

I guess a brief explaination might be best for those games that you cannot run on your computers. Or maybe ask someone else to review those games for you?

To be honest, I was OK with 2/5. 'Tis not the best game in the world hehe. More games to come soon tho ;)

Hi JA2, thanks for responding!

I would like to say at least that the games don't work on my PCs as this is useful information, but I will cut out anything that may be unfair. I can't really ask anyone else unfortunately, everyone is too busy.

Actually, if the game had worked I would have given it a better score. From what I saw on the video I would give it: Graphics 3/5, Sound 3/5, Gameplay 5/5, Overall 4/5.

For the ME haters. I use ME for 4 reasons.

1. It's better than 98 as it has all the drivers and no messing around with installs is needed.
2. I can install my one copy of ME on as many PCs as I like, unlike XP.
3. From experience I know that if you write software in Windows 9x/DOS it will work in XP, but usually not the other way around. Vista is a problem no matter if you code in NTSC or DOS.
4. To piss you off!

I can install my one copy of ME on as many PCs as I like, unlike XP.

So you're saying it's easier to steal a turd than a car?

So you're saying that I'm saying, that you're saying that I'm saying that ME is a turd and XP is a car?

if Snarkbait is correct that Windows XP has 82.02% of the market i think you should at least update one of your systems to xp with a low end modern graphics card. I all ways say to people use the programs your happy using don't change just because other people use something, but in this case you really have to follow the market to give a review.

Or I could just email you and you could write the reviews for the games that won't work on my PCs.

Thanks for your work! Newsed http://www.blitzforum.de/
