Speed up USB drive excitement

I was prodding about on my computer and found something I have never seen before:

Right click an external USB drive

Select 'Properties'

Click the 'Hardware' tab

Select your USB drive

Click on 'Properties'

Click the 'Policies' tab - THIS IS THE ONE I HAVE NEVER HEARD OF BEFORE

Choose between quick removal or speed.


Oooh.


Mine were all set for 'Quick Removal' - yet I always disconnected them via 'Safe Removal' - so, I can carry doing so but now I have extra speed.

Oooh.

I believe this is also know as enabling or disabling write-behind caching, if you then unplug the device before it has definitely absolutely written to the drive, you'll lose the data in question.

I found a speedup tweak under Power management for my Sony laptop. The laptop was always fairly weak at playing 3D games so I never bothered with them.

Anyhow, I found a couple of settings for CPU control and fan speed which have always been "Adaptive" and "Level 3" respectfully. After I cranked the settings up to "Performance" and "Level 5" I can now play stuff like GTA3: Vice City at fantastic frame rate (30 FPS most of the time)
Before changing the settings such games would drag along at 10FPS or so.

The chip set is only a 128MB shared Intel 915GM too so I am very suprised at the results.

It's always nice to find these little things out which boost the PC's performance.

Power management is crap on my laptop as well, I have to force off anything 'adaptive' on my MacBook Pro to play anything decent (Gears of War) without it plugged in, with the draw-back being that it utterly kills your battery. Surprised to hear that the Intel chip can display GTA at all.

Anyways, quick removal for me. I already had one USB drive die because a PC locked up during the process of reading it (my high school had some retarded computers) and was never able to repartition it to fix its broken state.

Of course, keep in mind that you'll likely have significantly less battery life at those 'power' settings as well... Which might be perfectly fine, depending on how/where you typically use your laptop.

There is another good tip posted by someone way back when (Puki?) ..

Create a separate hardware profile for gaming so that you can kill off services which you don't need when playing games

To create a profile:

Right-Click My Computer icon
Choose Properties
Now Hardware tab
Click Hardware Profiles button

Which takes you to:


Add a new profile by copying an existing one
(its worth reducing the timeout to 5 seconds at this stage too)
Select the new profile and click Properties button
Click the "Always include this profile as an option when Windows starts" check box

With this new profile addded you can dictate which services are run under the profile:

Select services

Click Start button and choose Run
Type "services.msc"
Right-Click on a service and choose Properties
Select Log On tab

You should be here:



Choose your new profile and click Disable button
Repeat the process for other unwanted services
Click Apply/Ok when done

Now, When you restart the PC, you are given the choice of profiles to run

Of course this would make a much bigger difference on a single-core system than a dual core machine.

I do this for my "permenently connected" usb backup drives but for memory sticks this is a bad idea. They can take forever to "stop" sometimes if you dont use the "quick removal" option. (and are very probably more likely to go 'south' if ýou just pull/knock em out by accident)

i think thats what corupted my tesco/teknica 4gb mp3 player
it stalls my computer when inserted (im trying to get it to be reformatted) and 25% of the songs play like they are on FF which is funny for some tracks but anoying for the rest

I played GTA3 and vice city on an intel 82810 and a TNT2, they played just fine, 25fps most of the time,but when it rained the 82810 struggled a little.

Got GTA Vice playing very nicely on my Laptop with integrated Intel GMA915 128MB. I also have a similar problem when it rains too.
