What are you guys using to make icons?

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/What are you guys using to make icons?

Anyone have an .ico exporter for PSP or Photoshop? Or an additional program that can make 32bit color .ico files?

There is a Photoshop exporter but it is not good at all. I think Gimp can export ICO's.

I, myself, make the image and the image mask (with Paint or something) then I put it together using this: http://www.blitzbasic.com/codearcs/codearcs.php?code=2141

What markcw said.

I use pngs and this site http://converticon.com/

Imagicon is made by a blitzer so you HAVE to use it. It's the law. :)

IcoFX, a *very* nice freeware icon editor:

Just tried IcoFX for the first time last night. Very nice, and will be my icon tool in the future. Sure beats what I was doing before!

If you have BLIde Plus, you can install a Photoshop and PaintShop Pro plugin, that works like a charm :D

Icon Sushi rules.

I have a photoshop plugin as well, but I don't think it can store multiple resolutions inside of the same .ico file, unlike IcoFX...

I just use the photoshop .ico plugin. Never been too bothered about having multiple scale icons, but then I don't really use vista yet either.

Even a 'designed for windows XP' game is supposed to have several different icon sizes... (Just not the 256x256 that Vista wants)

Icofx is the bomb.

I know how to do this with different tools but is there a tool which is able to deal with (import/convert/export) both OSX and WIN icons?

256*256!?!
bloody hell what for?
is it cos monitor resolutions are getting so high that were having dificulty seeing things on the desktop nowadays
if so then it kinda defeats the object bigger icons larger fonts sooner or later its gonna look like were running at 800*600 again (on a brand spanking new 1280*1024 or bigger display)

Vista allows you to scale your thumbnail views to arbitrary sizes -- I suppose a high-res original icon size gives much clearer resized versions as well, even if you'ld never actually show it at 256x256.

ah one file resized gotcha

kinda wish theyd do that for windows media player
whats the point in selecting album artwork if its going to display a titchy image (that isnt embeded into the mp3*) in the centre
if it did the old flying windows trick it wouldnt be so bad ;)

*for embeded artwork i agree titchy is best if at all, i mean its not untill we got screens on our mp3 players that we needed em they just waisted extra kb of space for no reason

Exports ico etc

and resource hacker (google reshacker.exe) for changing the exe's icon.

Shouldnt this be in CCTools? :P

Are you guys making your icon size 32x32 or 48x48?

Multiple sizes... I would draw the icon at the largest size you can, and scale it down to the smaller sizes for best visual effect.

IcoFX allows you to add multiple icon sizes into a single .ico file, so you can get the best looking icon depending on the users system.

This might be a good read:

http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa511280.aspx

It's aimed at Vista, but most of it still applies to XP as well. It's the designer guidelines for icons for windows applications.

According to it, the icon requirements for a control panel or application icon are the following: Application icons and Control Panel items:
The full set includes 16x16, 32x32, 48x48, and 256x256 (code scales between 32 and 256). The .ico file format is required. For Classic Mode, the full set is 16x16, 24x24, 32x32, 48x48 and 64x64.

Anyway, that page contains a lot of other useful information, including what angle and perspective to use in 3D icons, what kind of drop shadow settings to use, etc.
And other design guidelines such as not using shadows in icons at 24x24 or smaller, or recommending the 3D look for icons, except for the smallest sizes which need to be a head-on 2D view again.

I always make them 32x because of PAD rules.

So far I have just made them 48x48 in photoshop. that looks nice in a window but the scaling in XP sucks for the desktop. Handy info for when we release FlowED and LokBlox though.

Seems really easy to use.
