OMG - My pc has freaked out

My other PC has received a Windows Update this pm, it was rebooted and has now started replacing ALL my 'invalid Security IDs with DEFAULT IDs.'

All I can see is a long list of now over 140,000 files which have been changed...it's just changing them all I think (>300,000).

Anyone any thoughts? I checked it out on MSoft web site but couldn't find any info as to what to do if your entire hard drive's security IDs are being re-written...

This PC has the update waiting for it, not sure I will install it now.

Uh-oh, sounds like Microsfoft has hijacked your free will ;-)

Us, updated the filesystem? XPs filesystem did that to me when I gave it a partition formatted for Vista.

sadly, half of the drive was buggered after it finished- and i had to completely wipe the drive, destroy its partitions and then recreate before i could even get XP to install :-(


PS. Ubuntu installed fine no matter what. ;-) ;-)

XP does not get on well with Vista's new file/directoy linking mechanism. It's always been present as an option in NTFS, but only implemented in Vista. Ask XP to do anything with it (especially a defrag or scandisk) and it screws it up, big style.

Pete, I've heard before that if you partition Vista, it will still find XP on another partition and force it to dance the dance.

I have just managed to get my PC back in shape, I had a lot of massaging to do - WindowsXP was finally good enough to let me repair the installation back to SP1 - but I spent 3 days trying to convince it to let me upgrade to SP2 - no chance.

So the result is a new Hard drive, with the old drive as a slave drive with all my old apps and data on, still mostly in tact I a glad to say.

Now the hard task of rebuilding my PC installation back to a professionally usable machine, but with a much reduced application base this time.

It's really good to be back on line, I just received the 54 emails which were still waiting since Wednesday! Lol - mostly tosh.

Every time I reinstall Windows, I always tell myself I'll do a full system backup after I've loaded on all the little utilities I like, configured Windows to how I like and patched it all with latest drivers.

I never actually do it though.
