GDC San Francisco
Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/GDC San Francisco I'll be there... might be quite busy though during the event for various reasons.
I'd like to ... but we'll see.
Whats GDC San Francisco?
Since i live somewhat near (about 30 to 50 minutes away) i may go

Game Developers Conference. I've been a few times when employers have paid, its quite expensive and the lectures really arent that usefull for artists.
The show is ok for meeting people and seeing the latest 3D App showreels, and some middleware. Prices for entry start at $200 and go up to $2000 depending what you want to see.

I think I will be skipping it this year. Don't like San Francisco. My friend's sister's friend got shot outside a restaraunt last year during the conference. SF is a shithole.
What!?!? I love SF, went on holiday there a few years back and thought it was great.
Yes, I bet you thought Fisherman's Warf and the other presentable tourist attractions were wonderful.
I've been to San Francisco in Driver (the computer game) - I heard it was quite a good representation.
lol, which driver?
The first one - only one I have.
Let's put it this way; My girlfriend at the time and I went to a meeting at this bar for the Academy of Art. When we walked back to the subway station, I put a beer bottle in my coat pocket to use as a weapon.
The hotel cost $300/night, and had these nasty leapord-print robes that seemed to be made out of carpetting. One of the worst hotels I have ever been in, not even considering the price. They also tacked on a $30/day parking fee, plus about $20 daily in bullshit taxes I have never paid in any hotel.
The whole city is a reeking cesspool of corruption, addiction, and disease. I hope terrorists nuke it. I would be happy if everyone there died. I lived there for a year, by the way.
From now on, I will be going to the GDC in Dallas instead.

whoa...now you make me suspicious...I manage to convince some folks from Sony Im going with, to go there :) I hope noone will shoot them, otherwise im in deep sh*t :)

But did you liked it?
Seriously, only SF problem I've had so far was last years GDC when we asked two well-dressed men "where could guys like us get a drink here..."
We were slightly drunk already and it took few (too many) seconds to notice from their body language what they were and what they thought we were... :)

Ya, it isnt too nice. But dont go as far as to say u hope they nuke it. Im pretty sure i live within blast radius, so that wouldnt be too cool for me. lol
It is a piece of crap, that smells like urine though. I agree with that.
As for the topic at hand. You gotta pay 200 dollars to go? Count me out, maybe when im older, have a job, and a car to drive myself.
Maybe.
I might have to go to talk to Lee Bamber, but I think I will be skipping the conference itself.

Heh, that's a bit of an exaggeration, I hope. Some parts of San Fransisco are nice--unfortunately the bad parts overshadow that.
I dont think it is AS bad as he made it sound. Most of it is fairly nice.
From what my sister has told me, sacramento is much better though, so if you get a chance, maybe swing by there.

Why on Earth would anyone go to Sacramento? It is in the middle of nowhere. If you visit California, you should go to San Diego.
I have been in LA too (Siggraph) and that sure was worse than SF was last year... I liked SF but then again I didn't see very much of it, probably lot less than average tourist because most days were spent entirely in the Moscone Center.

Just saying my sister said it was good. I know they have a good bar and entertainment scene, and that is why i was saying i might be a good place to go.
I don't like San Fran either, pretty much feel like Leadwerks about the place. You have the tourism area around the wharf, but you don't need to stray far to find the cesspool that the city really is.
Twice I've walked half a block off of Market street near the Armani Store and had to step over an addict lying on the pavement and the gutter shooting themselves with a syringe. Don't know why, but this made me feel sick and incredibly angry to the point I felt like kicking them and telling them to go do their stuff some place where normal people don't have to see them.
Condidering I've only been there 5 times in 8 years, the stuff I've seen gives me the same impression as Leadwerks. Last time I went was 2 years ago, and it was still a filthy dump, strewn with litter and incredibly dusty.
It's a shame, first time I went there as a tourist the place reminded me a bit of an overgrown Brighton just much dirtier.

Ya. Im glad i dont live there, i live relatively close, but it is 100 percent a different area. Never seen anyone shoot up on my side walks. Thank god.
America is in decline. I blame the Russians :)
Definately going! 19-22 and staying to visit for the week-end!
