Dogfight: The Great War
Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Dogfight: The Great War
Hi Guys,
We've just put a new game up over at
Rock Solid Arcade, a World War 1 plane flying game.
Have a go and tell me what you think!
Good work again. But, I get transparent blue squares around planes and text. Not too distracting but there anyway.
Very cool.
Enemy needs to be a bit harder. Maybe give those more troublesome fighters a tighter turn?
And more levels! Completed them first time round.
:o)
Pretty nice one again!
I played until level 10, but the game locked up -- I restarted the level about 5 times or so (that zeppelin is *hard*, especially since you can collide with it). After the 5th crash, I saw the little window with the zeppelin attack points pop up, fade away, and my plane disappeared.
I'm looking at a blank backdrop now, with a crash smoke trail down the center, and I hear the music and engine roar playing in the background... But no foreground graphics at all. No plane, no zeppelin, and pressing the cursors or spacebar don't make anything happen either. (I don't hear the shooting sound either when pressing space.)
all I can do at this point is close my browser. :-?
Hmm, many people have got that bug now, but I'm having difficult reproducing it...
Oh, on two-player, each level begins with the level text for the single player game. So, for the tenth game, you get the Zeppelin attack points graphic for a few moments.
After about 15 or so games in two-player, the "Player x wins" text stops appearing and the game immediately flashes into a new round. The engine sounds keep going, even after you "Quit" back to the main menu.
Only a restart of the page resets everything.
More levels and harder opponents please ;-)
Can't wait to try this one. It looks like it's right up my alley. Will report back tonight.
Thanks guys! I've uploaded a new version that fixes all of the bugs.
Aww, that's a shame... the planes now have little translucent boxes around them :-(
They were fine here before your update.
<edit> Actually, smoke trails and texts all have translucent backgrounds too now.
How's about having the guns over-heat or something, just to make it a bit harder - and something they used to have trouble with too ;-)
I wouldn't go so far as to have the gun sheer off the propeller blades tho, as happened occasionally :-)
And why do the enemy's get limited bullet range, whereas I can shoot things at opposite sides of the screen.
Just nit-picking :-p
Hmm, could you send me a screenshot? I can't reproduce that on any machines here. What's your OS/Browser/Flash version?
michael@...
Flash has been a bit of a nightmare, in this regard. Really brittle libraries.
Thanks for letting me know!
False alert false alert... nothing to see here... move along.
Am just gonna slink back into my dark corner.
I like the game a lot and played it through to the end. I do wish that the enemies were harder though. Maybe decrease their turning radius and increase their rate of fire or something? Otherwise I really like this.
Haha this is pretty cool! Still playing it but I like what I see so far. Some actual physics for the turning would be nice, it's seems very robotic and stiff. Still cool tho!
Nm...I just saw the Up key swap option. Still testing. Btw, all graphics look perfectly fine here.
EDIT: Wait it looks like there is some physics for turning etc. Michael this is awesome bro, now how am I supposed to get any work done....
EDIT2: All your stunt and dogfight games completed...need more...
Works fine here ... not bad for a quick play.
16 bit desktop perhaps?
Reminds me of an old (CGA) PC game, Sopwith, but with better graphics and additional enemies. Played fine through all ten levels here (single player). Good stuff!
I'm not a very skilled player and I only died a couple of times, so maybe it could be made tougher for better players. But keep this easy option for those like me! <g>
using Win ME/Firefox.
Seriously, Windows ME?! That's toilet water. You might as well have Vista. :P
Played about 30 seconds. Looks good here. :D
WINDOWS XP, MOZILLA FIREFOX 2.0.0.11
yes, Win ME/Firefox/16-bit colors, that may be it.
Edit: I just changed to 32-bit and the boxes have gone.
Ked: you're entitled to your opinion and I'm entitled to mine. Let's leave it at that.

Let's not forget that I
did type a " :P " at the end of the line because... get ready... I was kidding. No need to get all defensive. :)
I don't do jokes. :P
I don't do jokes. :P
lol.
Alright, enough thread hijacking; back to Dogfight: The Great War.
I'm on Vista. I'm considering upgrading to ME.
Thanks for figuring out that it was 16 bit causing it - that's a huge relief!
Chroma - There are some physics for turning, we played around with something a lot more realistic but people kept crashing! We might do something with proper physics in the future, though I'm not really sure what that would be. Glad you liked the games!
Wendell - Difficulty modes might not be a bad idea. We've gotten a lot of too hard/too easy feedback in roughly even quantities..
It's fun... My issue was simply I held down fire all the time and just went round and round in circles and beat everything.
The hardest bits were attempting to hit the ground targets.
Also your fire range is much longer than the bombers so you simply stay at the left hand edge of the screen taking them all out.
Great fun though.
As already mentioned the holding down fire and spinning like a catherine wheel does make it rather easy.
I think implementing gun overheating to force sporadic on target fire would be a big plus.
Cool game though.
Rog.
I'm on Vista. I'm considering upgrading to ME.
All jokey-ness set aside, I would implore you to decide against getting it, and it would be considered downgrading.
1. ME has/had several bugs and compatibility issues
2. Got 4th out of 25 on PC World's
Top 25 Worst Tech Products (Can't forget this one.)
3. ME is no longer supported.
Also, staying with Vista probably isn't the best either. When/If you change to another Windows OS I would pick either Windows 2000, or Windows XP. Windows 2000 is a lot more stable than ME and is still being supported until 2010.
I'm kidding! Though I think Vista will be my last MS OS. Either Ubuntu or OS X next...
I'm on Vista for 64 bit. Though XP has a 64 bit version, it's even worse.
Glad you liked the games!
Yep, I sure did and still playing too. Which is very rare I might say. If a game isn't great I won't play it. Life is too short to waste on mediocre games. And on that note, I'm off to play Dogfight!
Oh yeah, need more missions! Can you put in an Me-262 also? ;-)
Cool game.
I agree with the limiting fire comments above. Would make it a bit more of a challenge.
I would also love to see a boost key to give you a bit of throttle control so you could change the tightness of your loops.
Nice game. Yeah I would agree some speed control would add to it. Really annoying when you're in dogfight and you have to stop looping to avoid going off the screen.
I've finished Dogfight probably over 20 times now. Do you have a donate button? Waiting for Dogfight 2 here...
looks nice but i cant get the controls, i keep trying to use left/right and ploughing into the ground.
I'm kidding!
lol! Ha, you totally had me there. xD
Micheal,
I love it, although I wish the gfx where a bit bigger (seems smaller than stunt pilot), a lot of fun although it was over too fast. I suppose there's a lot more you can add to it, I hope you are benefitting in some way from all this great work.
Darkheart
Sweet. Your image-link for dog fight at the top of the page leads to stunt pilot trainer.
Oops... just broke that an hour ago! Good find.
Finished the game -- no problems this time. :-?
Sorry to bump an old post, but I was watching BBC News 24's show 'Click' the other night - it was quite late - and saw a split-second worth of this game, and I wondered if it was the same as I'd played on here.
Indeed it was - check the video here at 12:12:

Hey, it's a small bit of publicity :)
Actually, it's Stunt Pilot, and it gets a proper mention at 20:43 :-)
