It's not arrived yet, but would i need USB 2 to use my keyboard properly. I understand it's 40 times faster than the old USB, but will i have enough bandwidth to properly use the keyboard?
USB 2 for my keyboard?
Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/USB 2 for my keyboard? USB 1 has enough bandwidth for a keyboard
What kind of keyboard are we talking about exactly?
I can't really see a keyboard needing anything faster than the good ol' PS/2 port without it having something sort of extension or device built-in to it.
(like those Logitech gaming keyboards...)

Are you talking about a musical keyboard?
Either way, USB1.1 @ 12Mbps is plenty (assuming you don't have 20 other bandwidth-hungry USB devices dangling off your PC).

Thanks guys :)
I still use the old circular connectors, till a couple years ago I used the really old circular connectors. For mice and keyboards, and never noticed a difference.
Like the others said though, it depends on what extra gadgets you want with the keyboard.

What exactly is the reason for motherboard manufacturers to keep the old ps/2 connectors for legacy mice/keyboards anyhow? I'd say make them USB ports instead, at least they'd have more than one purpose that way.
On a USB-related note, how do you check your bandwidth usage levels anyhow? Only ever saw the monitor once, and that was due to my webcam apparently taking 75% of the power that set of ports I was using could offer.

Don't you still need PS/2 connectors for early start-up and BIOS use before USB drivers are loaded? Also started in failsafe mode would need PS/2 keyboard.
I've a Logitech MX518 Mouse and Logitech G15 Keyboard ... both need USB 2.0 for obvious reasons ^^
And no, current bios are able to use USB devices. I do not have a ps2 device attached at all.

Yep, you can even boot off of a USB device nowadays, like a hard drive or a USB Memory Drive.
tonyg: BIOS' since a few years past have overcome that limitation with toggleable options for USB legacy emulation.
Only problem i have with this keyboard is when you push a key, there is a small, but noticable latency. Might try the MIDI port instead, see if it's faster.
Ross C: That's probably your sound (buffer) settings, not the keyboard.

How else am i going to hook up my trusty IBM keyboard with buckling springs? ;)
And then?
Current USB2 controllers normally only support up to 10 USB2 ports ... which I already have side a side with the 2 ps/2 connectors ... what would be the use of more? ^^
But I would like to have 2 FireWire 800 instead of the ps/2 ;-)

vinyl, is that the ASIO buffer?
You might as well have a crappy board (older board especially) there the USB stuff was handled by the CPU and the more the CPU was used, the larger the latency from input.
I had that with my P3 System and it was that bad that it was impossible to game with the mouse on USB due to 100-120ms latency when the game took 100% cpu.
On such a system a USB -> PS/2 adapter is a great solution (logitech still gives a free one with any mouse that does not need the USB2 bandwidth and update frequency ie all their non MX mice)

My motherboard is about a year old i think. Supports an Athlon 64 bit 3200+ or summit, so i don't think it's too old. I've not looked at motherboard advances in a while, so i couldn't say whats good :o)

Yes, reduce the buffer size. If you make it too small however you will hear 'popping' noises when you play a note. Try to get it as small as you can without this happening.
That indeed sounds strange. Did you make sure the most current drivers are installed and Bios up to date? Might be that there has been something getting in its way.
I did reduce the buffer size slightly, and it gave an estimate of latency at 2.6 milliseconds. I will reduce it further and see what happens. Probably my cheapy Mobo doesn't help too much. Thanks once again guys. You've been a great help :o)
You might it helpful to use ASIO4ALL drivers.
I use Guitar Rig and Acid to record me jamming around and ther latency wouldnt go lower than about 20ms, that was using the Creative ASIO drivers (Audigy2)
I installed the ASIO4ALL drivers and I coulkd go as low as 2ms - although 4 was fine (2 caused a few glitches).

USB 1.1 runs at 11 Mbit. That is 11,000,000 bits per second. Unless you can type more than a million characters a second, the USB 1 speed is not going to be the limiting factor here. :-)
Bandwidth is not everything. The bus clock of USB 1.1 is not fast enough for high speed devices like gamer equipment, so it actually does make a differences. Gaming equipment will not run on USB Slow.1
I'm using them driver rIKman :o) I'll have a go maybe when i get in from work.

If that's accurate, you should be fine. The ASIO4ALL drivers work well for me too. Sounds like you're all set. Have fun!
And for those of you who still haven't realised, Ross is talking about a musical keyboard, not a typing keyboard! :)

Its a musical keyboard, not a QWERTY one. thats just given me a thought though
in close encounters when the ship has a convo with the computer/synth/lightshow and the confusion as to which keyboard
what if those light up qwerty keyboards could light up whilst text was parsed out
past a text file in and watch the pc type out in a light show
now wheres nebula when you need him ;)
