...raytracing weekend
Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/...raytracing weekend really cool :D
I remember when it took almost a weekend for POVray to render a single frame.
Yeh! New wallpaper.
Wow! Impressive!
Wins the price uber nerd 2007 ^^
Depending on when Mark is planning to release Max3D, he might want to reconsider the 3d engine once more?! ;O)
I just can't believe the supplied source it all there is, is it really that simple?
If you know what you are doing: yes ^^
most others first would need to read through the small 400pages book "3D Math primer" which contains most of the needed math for it.

There used to be a book (which is still in a box around my house somewhere) which describes a full ray tracer, with source (in basic) for the Amiga...
Pretty good it was too.

very cool. I remember doing polyray/POVray stuff way back in 1993 or so, it took 24 hours or more to render one scene on my pentium 90.... then a little game called DOOM came along and ruined my life, lol
I was an avid Povray user, and sometimes I still use it. But when I started using it I knew zip about doing so, so I started out with shiny bozo spheres on checkerplanes.. the standard stuff. It may be all simple, but I actually liked all those odd worlds you could create with it..
I still use it from time to time, especially with Moray, and my kids use it to render ML-Cad (lego) stuff all the time
I use povray for Toribash stuff all the time. You can make some nice povray vids with Toribash. ;)

Way back in the day (circa 1992) a friend of mine, had Imagine 3 he rendered a 100 frames lowres scene on his Amiga A2000-68020 and it took about 1,5 hours to render.
Then we got Imagine3 on a 486DX-66 which rendered the exact same scene in about 5 minutes. Our jaws dropped in amazement.

Yeah, that little DX in the name made a difference like day and night with anything that needed math ... was just to cool
that was the first CPU I had where I had to look for a software break to play my old games *lol*
