We create culture - now officially

I'm not sure if it was already said before:
An EU commission now decided Computer Games are culture that should be treated and protected like any other cultural value.

This mainly means that french creators can benefit which is due to the fact that they have a crack in their cups if not even more.

They highly protect their "culture" by pushing down other cultures within their borders by ways for which other countries are normally called nazies and the like.
One example is the "at least 50% of the played music on radio must be french". So I would guess that this "culture" definition of france goes in a quite similar way in the end.

I like the French attitude to matters such as these. They don't take no crap from europe. Britain could do well to be more like them in that respect.

...And I wouldn't mind if they would finally give up the £, strange measurements and driving on the wrong side of the road too. Preferably all these changes at once, would be fun to watch the chaos! :)

@Dreamora: Why can't you back up your facts? Please don't spead misinformation. It just happens that more than half of the french game studios died in the early 2000, and could have survived if France hadn't such a hard competition from countries that have much lower social taxes, and above all if it was helping its game industry (think "Canada"). Helping game creators can only be a good thing, and has little to do with the law about the 40% (not 50%) of french music at the radio. This law, though probably ineffective and rather stupid, was voted mainly because radios were even more stupid and were just broadcasting american music in big huge loops, again and again. You have the right not to like these kinds of laws (and I'd tend to follow you, to some point) but throwing adjectives like "nazy" is pushing the limits.

Nothing wrong with protecting a nation's culture and supressing cuckoo foreign cultures. It should be the same everywhere, and it would be if the greedy, green-eyed, globalist 'unmentionables' would leave sovereign nations alone. As if.

Yeah, let's just all stagnate to death, but at least we can keep our culture! (I'm in a cranky mood today, so no smily)

I'd like to see Britain integrate more closely into Europe. I'd like to see a centralised European government, but I'd be happy for us to ditch the pound and adopt the euro for starters.

Koriolis: While this might be true, other german countries for example do not even have enough game studios to have half beeing dieing down. There are only 4 within the whole german speaking area and CryTek definitely does not qualify as a german game studio as most there do not even speak german or are german.

Hijuklo: funny is, if other countries try to protect their own culture, they are normally called rassists. We are that "foreign friendly" here in switzerland that they stopped to do the christmas story with the children in school as it wouldn't fit the multi cultural background of muslims (30%+ of the pupils even thought we are in a christian country) and judes, which is just a bad joke. There isn't much of our culture left thanks due to the "we please all foreign nutties" attitude.

Years ago when I played in several Rockbands, we thought this 40% law is pretty good for french local bands. Swiss Indy Bands had no chance against the big record labels. Who knows, probably I'd be a rockstar now, with a bit of cultural protection...

To be recognized as culture is really good for us games designers, especially for starters. Now we can go to our governments and ask for financial help, just like the movie makers, theater, opera, Museums etc. In this little land we spend about 250 millions for culture projects every year. Why not for games, why not for you and me. BTW Dreamora, if there isn't already such a thing, we should found the swiss computer games publishers trade union SCGPTU, I'm not kidding here.
