I got a cellphone with bluetooth for xmas!

Unfortunately I played around a bit with an Ipod Touch the other day (which is virtually identical to the iphone) before getting this, so the little screen and the keyboard with limited web access through Verizon's network instead of WiFi access was kind of anti-climactic, but my dad's paying for the service plan, and I don't want to shell out $600 + $40 a month for IPhone thru AT&T.

But after thinking about it, and playing around with the phone a bit, and browsing that site to see the other phones that are available for Sprint, I've decided this really is a pretty cool phone. It's slick looking, the screen is bright and colorful. And though I don't send phone messages to anyone, the keypad will come in handy for entering names and addresses and maybe taking notes.

Oh and it's got a camera, which can also take videos. That's nice. The phone I had before my last one had a camera. I didn't use it much, but I kind of missed it when I've been out drinking with friends and they had theirs with lots of fun pictures on it. So I'll have to figure out how to take videos with that and send them to people.

Still might get an Ipod Touch though. Cause damn, being able to access websites anywhere there's a WiFi connection with a little gadget you can stick in your pocket and still be able to read the text... That would come in real handy when I'm looking for a nice place to eat, or some interesting places to go when I'm visiting someplace I'm not familiar with. Or for checking prices and details on stuff when I'm out shopping.

But anyway... This phone I have here has Bluetooth. Should I get a bluetooth adaptor for my PC? Will that allow me to upload my own ringtones, or do they generally disable that and make you pay for them through their web interface? What else might it allow me to do? Store photos I guess. Music too. Anything else interesting I can do with it?

Hm... I don't even know if this thing supports games or not, or how well it would run them if it does. My last two phones ran games like crap, and the website doesn't indicate at all how powerful the processors in these various models are.

If you can play games on it, there'll invariably be a couple of demo games pre-installed. I guess the only way to find out how good it is for games, is to try some.

My phone (Motorola L7) has a built in mediaplayer and you can also use media files (MP3s) as ringtones. Bluetooth isn't that fast for large file transfers - if you plan to do that, you'd be better off wiring it up to your PC (it came with a cable, right?)

Mine has a USB cable with it, which I can use to access my phone as a 'removable disk', and it also charges the battery while I'm doing it.

Anyway, I've often wondered - are those tiny little keyboards actually any use? Do you have to use your fingers or do they give you a lil stick to prod at the keys with?

I don't see a USB port on it, but I just took the manual out cause I can't find the games and I can't access the web yet cause the phones not set up for calls till I go into Best Buy today to do it.

As for the keyboard, yes you use your fingers.

I guess it depends on how giant your hands are as for how easy it is to use, but I'm an adult of size and you just hold the phone sideways with both hands and use your thumbnails to push the buttons. I can type pretty fast this way.

To do symbols you can either hold shift and press a key, or you can press a special shift button which then makes the next character press shifted. This is so that you don't have to hold shift with your left thumb and let go of the phone with your right hand to try to push a button near your left thumb. As soon as I saw I would need to use shift I thought of this, and wondered if the phone could do it and sure enough there's a big orange button which does it. Works great. Oh and the phone will autocomplete for you, and will auto capitalize, and will enter numbers from the keyboard without the need to shift when entering in a number only field. The screen also flips when you're using the keyboard, and the input on the arrow keys flips as well to match the screen. So it's well thought out, but that's what I'd expect from LG, I have one of their monitors and they're good with interfaces and make good gadgets.

Well I found the games. There are a few demos. Man they're cheap on the demos though! You get literally about 30 seconds of gameplay of Ms. Pac man or Tetris before it exits the demo.

So games wise... This phone seems faster and higher res than my old phones were. The games aren't bad. Ms Pacman using the little arrow pad isn't great by any means though. I suspect shooters would also be right out. But tetris works quite well. The only complaint I have is that the games don't have much in the way of sound. Ms Pac man doesn't play the wokka-wokka sound, and there's no music in Tetris, or any sound effects for that matter. Unless maybe there's a demo option I didn't notice to enable them.

So, even after all these years, I'm still not excited about cellphone gaming! Though I suppose the Iphone, once jailbroken, is great for many types of games. But without jailbreak I don't know if there's any games for it.

I just googled for phone specs which does suggest it has USB connectivity, so look for a cable in the box with a USB plug on one end and something else on the other, then find the right bit of the phone to stick it into.

I also noticed that it only has 16mb of internal memory. If you're planning on using a lot of MP3s on it, you should consider getting a MicroSD/Transflash card. They're pretty cheap.
