Who vuses their own voice for ingame speech?
Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Who vuses their own voice for ingame speech?
Who here actually records their own voice for speech in a game, or do you always get someone else to do it?
Also, do you try to do more than one characters voice?
Nooo... Programmer voices are even worse than programmer art. I would suggest that if you can't afford (or you don't have access to) people who can provide decent voice work then don't include voices at all.
I use my voice, and other people have used my voice too.
People don't like using their own voice because they think it sounds daft, and tend to speak under their breath... Having been a front man in a couple of bands you kinda get used to it and have confidence to speak with a bit of expression.
I use anyone i can get my hands on. Gonna use my gf for my next game/project. I agree with Rob, it's all about confidence.
As Ross and Rob already said, you need someone who isn't afraid to let go. I've used friends in the past and some are great while some are not so good, but it's all down to whether they have the confidence to let go. Some of the best comments I ever got about Tennis Babes was a review which praised the quality of the professional voiceover doing the commentary. Which was unprofessional ( in every sense of the word ) me.
If you lack the confidence to let go, then just do one voice, your own. If you have confidence, there's no reason not to do more. Many AAA games with high budgets and professional voice actors still have each actor doing several characters each.
Any interests in exchanging game voices for different languages? Next year I could need a few english sentences and I doubt I can sound like a native speaker. The only one I know is our bartender at the local scotish pub, and believe me you don't want to hear his voice.
But I could provide accentfree german sentences (even female if I ask my gf) in exchange.
I'm game for a voiceswap. Just send me an email when you want them if you're still interested.
I sound like a radio announcer, so no -- at no point is my radio announcing voice appropriate.
I needed some robot voices so got
MorphVox Pro .
Some of the voices are rubbish. However you can get something which sounds good by doing an impression. You still feel a berk at the time trying to be an evil Alien Robot Overlord but don't have the embarrassment of listening to yourself over and over again when playtesting.
I've used my voice and my wife's voice for in game speech, I found audacity to be an excellent recording utility.
I am planning to, but then again I'm an actor :)
ive found myself in spoken word remixes
i just dictaphone random annecdotes to myself whilst fixing tyres or other mundane things ... it gives me an excuse to talk to myself :))
email em to a mate in manchester ... next thing i know im singing a duet with barny the purple f**king dinosaur
i knew gab used his own voice!
I use my own voice for monsters and add a lot of filters
I had my own voice in the beta of Fairway saying "Testing 123" on the options page announcer slider, but I changed it to the proper announcer for the final release. John Cutter, the designer, recorded himself as one of the "extra" announcers in the game and that worked out well e.g. "Yeah, I can't even look at that scorecard Ben" etc.
@Gabriel, thanks for your offer: I'll contact you on time.
There might be a confidence bit present in the refusal to use your own voice. Then again, one voice is better than the other. If everyone's voice would be usable, then there wouldn't be voice actors. It's about articulation, breath-control, lip-control, text-interpretation. It's a job.. and whenever I'd need voices I'd pick ppl who have experience doing it.
I once recorded my father, singing to some random song. He isn't a singer btw. And when I recorded his voice, there were oodles o' -bladidbladiabla- In THis WORLDmmhmmmm, TO YOUhhmmmmmm-breath-. Tons o' wrong hmmms and breath points, basically due unintended 'laziness' of the untrained mouth-muscles. One could edit it all away of course, but still: applied talking is an art.. :P
