Indie games you bought

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Indie games you bought

OK time for one of those types of threads we all enjoy browsing when trying to avoid work.

What are the last few indie games you bought or donated to? Why did you buy them and where did you hear about them?

Here’s mine:

World War Alpha (http://www.mdickie.com/gam_war.htm)

A crazy mix of Risk and squad-based beat ‘em up from Mdickie. Irresistably fun. Heard about it because of a thread here.

FastCrawl (http://www.pawleyscape.com/fastcrawl/)

Dungeon crawling turn-based strategy game. Played a one hour time-limited demo after seeing it had won a Game Tunnel award and had to have more. RPG fun for the casual gamer.

Kingdom of Loathing (www.kingdomofloathing.com)

Browser-based MMORPG entirely done in hand drawn stick figures. Love the sense of humour of the creators of the game – been playing since January and I still log on most days. Think I came across it when I was getting bored with WoW and wanted something a bit less slick. Free to play – they make their money through donations and merchandise.

FastCrawl is great although I wished it had more. I've just written a review which will appear on http://www.binaryjoy.co.uk soon.

Recently I bought Eschalon Book 1 and I REALLY recommend this if you like RPGs especially ones like Ultima.

I'll probably buy Mystery Case Files: Madame Fate to play with the family. I've bought some of the other ones and the Everest game too.

I totally recommend Peggle.

Please check here for reviews of games I totally recommend (or slightly recommend):

Stuff Like Alien Shooter should not be missed (it's hard though), oh and Bricks of Egypt 2 and Bookworm Adventures, Master of Defense, Star Monkey (hard to get hold of). Oh and Platypus, I bought that too.

That'll do for now.

Does the shareware version of Doom count? ^^

In a way the fact that it doesn't have more is part of the attraction of FastCrawl for me. I play it instead of patience. There are lots of deep RPG's around - enough quality ones to make it a difficult area for the indie - but this manages to have some of the feel of an RPG in a casual game.

Yeah it's great I just maybe wanted some strength and speed potions to help me out of tricky fights.

Haven't bought any, but was tempted by bullet candy.

Fairway Golf

Lots of XBox Live Arcade Games (do they count as Indie games? $10 a piece).

I mostly buy utilities that help me with my work, though I did but the following indie games :-

Smugglers
Evochron Renegades

Easter Bonus, Peggle.

mount and blade

Bridge Builder, I think it was called. Follow up to pontifex?

Some space exploration game on the Mac. Nexus something?

Donated to Jet Set Willy online.

I was very close to registering 'Alien Shooter', but on the last screen they said 'oh plus tax'. I thought it was misleading they didn't put the full price up until I had gone through a lot of the process so they lost a sale.

I bought Eschalon: Book 1 and I agree with Grey in recommending it. It's really good. It's hard to pass up an indie Mac game that's that good, because there aren't very many of them - at least that I can find.

I don't use my PC enough to buy games for it anymore...

I really havent found any indie games I thought were worth the money. I do buy the odd tool though. $100's for a 3dsmax exporter, Unwrap3D, and shaderFX.

Actually the only Indie games I bought was Starscape by moonpod, plus Chuzzle and scrabble blast or something for my wife.

I bought Techno: The base, not finished it yet by a long way though.

I got peggle free when I bought the orange box. It's the HL2 edition, where you have the unicorn with a face hugger on it.

Fate, Aquaria, Sam and Max Season 1: Eps1-6, Mr Robot. If I had more free time, I'd definitely snap up all three games from WadJet Eye Games as well.

Holiday Bonus and xmas bonus
Fairway Solitare
Aquitania
Cradle of Persia
Hidden Expedtion: Everest
Eschalon Book 1
Peggle and Shadowgrounds.

Got carried away playing games like Crysis, Bioshock, Halflife episodes etc, but Holiday Bonus and Fairway Solitare got me back into programming.

Forgot how much fun could be had with simpler(maybe not the right word but you know what I mean) games.

The two indie games that I've purchased so far were Gish and MarbleBlast gold. I think I've probably spent as much time on each of them as I have on any commercial game though.

A not very many, my favorite right now is Mount & Blade.

I don't really play games that much though. Which means I don't buy many either.

I have only ever bought 2 indie games (that I remember)

Another World (the recent rerelease by the original developer)
Aquaria

Defcon
Geometry Wars, off Steam.

<edit>
and ofcoz, BlitzMax
</edit>

Tank Universal
Aquaria

I've only bought tools so far. No indie games have been worth purchasing.

Edit: I should add that I do want to buy Cryptex of Time when it comes out, since it's actually good. And Peggle doesn't count, Popcap is very, very far from being what most would define as an independent developer.

Hmm, hard to remember.

I think I bought Platypus and Zuma and some scrabble game yonks ago.

I'm sure there's one or two more, but I can't remember which I just trial played and which I upgraded... hmmm.

Eschalon Book 1

Most recently Galactic Civilizations II and its two expansions.

Penumbra

Sam & Max season 2... Not buying into the whole episodal dealy though, I'll wait for it to be out on CD.

Last to first:

Condor Soaring Simulator ( http://www.condorsoaring.com )
Steelbeasts Pro SE ( http://www.steelbeasts.com )
Galactic Civilizations II & Extra's ( http://www.galciv2.com )
Conquest of the Aegean ( http://cota.matrixgames.com/ )

All are stellar.

TAGAP (The Apocalyptic Game About Penguins) - was free I think. unless I have just got a demo..

Kingdom Elemental - a blitz3d game, quite fun (I cheated the whole way through though as I wanted to see all the good stuff without having to 'work' for it)

The only other games I've bought this year were Diablo2 and Dawn of War now that they're nice and cheap. Not indie games though...

I'll wait for it to be out on CD

CD? It's either DVD or download grandad!

Spheres of Chaos

An egypt ish breakout style game a while back, bricks of egypt i think it was called.

Good game BP, that one and all the others in the series.

Love Spheres of Chaos. He should release it on Live Arcade. It would mop up.

To this day, sadly I have never bought an indie game. Probably for 3 reasons:

1. I just can't find one that interests me.
2. Graphics/visual quality.
3. Lack of depth. Too many indie dev's just try to rush a game out and it's turns out to be crap.

Indie games are for playing in between not for people with no life that have time to play them half of a day ... ;-)

beside that: then you havent played puzzle quest on XBox Live Arcade ;-)

That is what I like about the indie games in my original post - a quick gaming fix and no need to commit hours of your life. Kingdom of Loathing, for example, only gives you 40 turns per day. I look to indies for something different and quirky rather than expecting vast amounts of content that could only be achieved with a large dev team.

I just got a subscription to Shockwave. So for a yearly fee I get to play any game in their catalog free and completely unlocked.

The only problem is that they don't have the latest games. They are usually a few months behind.

From that, I got hooked on Peggle and some of the hidden item games.
