Reason enough to own a PS3 ...

Because it causes you pain??

Are you okay Jeremy - seems like an unusual thread title and post?

Just how much do you know about pain?

Must be a new game title.

Looks like some dev team had waaaaaaay too much time on their hands. I'm loving what the monkey does at the very end though :).

A PS3 would make a good guard dog - it's ugly enough to scare off a blind burglar.

Pain
Reason enough to own a PS3

pain relief?

buy a ps3 or the sony heavies will come round and forcably insert your other console up your anus? :))

Pain looks ok, but my reasons to own a PS3 are:

- Metal Gear Solid 4
- Final Fantasy XIII
- Little Big Planet
- Echochrome
- Killzone 2
- Ratchet & Clank: Tool of Destruction
- Uncharted
- Resistance
- Folklore
- Warhawk
- Tekken 6 (because I need another fighting game, Soul Calibour 4 is the best but it's not enough ^^)
- Gran Tourismo 5
- God Of War 3

May have forgotten a few exclusives, but there are also the multi platform titles :)

I think the PS3 looks good (at least it looks better than the 360).

I've only played Uncharted on your list. It's fantastic, but a little too easy. Ratchet & Clank and Folklore are due for Christmas - of the two (and out of all current PS3 games) I'm most looking forward to Folklore. I'm looking forward to Final Fantasy XIII Versus more than Final Fantasy XIII, but that's just going on the promo trailers. Both the Xbox360 and the PS3 have some great games lined up for release in the future, but the PS3 will inevitably be the console of choice for JRPGs, which is pretty much the main reason I bought one to complement the Xbox.

hmm, just looks like simple throwing ragdolls at a scene with nice graphics to me, where's the game? Should be pretty easy to pull of with almost any engine that uses one of the popular physics API's.

I only looked at the youtube vid posted above though, so hope theres more to it.

That list dos contain some tempting reasons to get one. But I'll get a Wii first, also there's still tons of good games to play on PS2 and Gamecube yet :-)

Bleh. Someone finally upgraded Truck Dismount!

That is all.

Is Soul Calibur 4 out yet?

The only reason I can come up with is having too much money, and not enough sense to simply throw it off a bridge instead.

Of course some poor innocent passer by (or is that passer under?) might be crushed under such large amounts of money, and we get to hear Jack Thompson on late night shows telling everyone how Tetris is training our kids to become involuntary manslaughterers.

Is Soul Calibur 4 out yet? I think it come out in summer or next xmas I think

Hehe, I knew this would cause some controversey. Truth be told I'm very impressed with the PS3. The level of interaction in the games such as Pain seems beyond what could be done on other platforms besides high end PC's. The only game I've seen in fact that has similar levels of graphics + physical interaction is Crysis. The only difference is that these PS3 games are doing all this stuff at decent framerates whereas my PC runs like a pig with Crysis.

Pain is simple fun really mostly a tech demo with a lot of thought put into it but for $10 it's worth it. I haven't been able to sit down and play a game for multiple hours like I did with Pain and still be laughing as I was playing the last hour as much as the first. Technically, it's stunning. I think it would be hard to port the game to one of the other consoles without a downgrade, other games look sparce in comparison and that's not to mention the fact that every object in the game is physics enabled.

Yeah would surely be meeeega hard to port it from the moast bloated platform to the real ones like dual to quad core CPU with dedicated system and graphics ram ... ;-)
Naw not really

But the idea of exclusives is to have them exclusive, no mather if it would be hard to port or not.

Hmmm the videos don't look impressive to me. I do like the lightning in their scene and they have nice models but the gameplay looks pretty boring to me. Actually if you have to deal with ragdolls you'll have to tweak this kind of stuff enough on your own. I guess it's only fun for those who don't...

It's basically like the crash mode in Burnout except funnier because you're throwing a person not a car. There are all sorts of ways to grab onto objects too hook combos together etc... Maybe it's not for everyone, I thought it was a great concept and a really solid implementation.

hmm, crysis physics doesn't seem to use that much CPU though. On my athlon64 3000+ the difference between low and high physics settings was negligible, and the game is quite playable with mostly high and some medium settings.

I just don't think anyone bothered with ragdolls and physics before, doesn't look like the game does much else really?

Pain kind of looks like a simple indie game idea done commercially or a tech demo.

In Crysis the difference between low and high isn't noticeable until you begin enabling objects to move. For example on high you can run through entire buildings and every component becomes physics enabled (when they are just sitting there pre-collision they aren't physics enabled). On low you cannot run through the houses etc... I actually used the physics settings as part of my strategy in the game. Anyway, if you turn them to high and then run a vehicle through 2 of the houses the game will crawl. I don't even think there are as many physics enabled objects in 2 of the bungalos in Crysis as there is in Pain either and the physics quality doesn't seem to be as high either. In Pain the scene stays destroyed too as long as you want, you can also instantly reset it back to normal at any time. Anyway, barring all that the PS3 runs it all super fast and smooth which I cannot say for my PC. If I had a quad core maybe ...

Your impression of Pain is correct though, it's really just a very solid (and crazily detailed) implementation of a simple one trick pony concept. It's very indie in that respect and it is of course a $9.99 game ... so it's to be expected. It's just really fun with some multiplayer, objectives, but best of all a sandbox style mode that lets you just experiment with thousands of physics objects and combos.

The PS3 in general though has come a long way. I just got mine but from downloading the demos of games from last year and this year the improvement is tremendous. Resistance: Fall of Man looks like a glorified PS2 game but Rachet & Clank is very close to that Toy Story goal they have been aiming for. It's ridiculously detailed. Both titles are from the same developer and you can see they've improved 10 fold in a year. I think the best game overall is Drake's Fortune though. It appears to be nearly as detailed as Crysis in terms of foliage and shadows etc... The only thing is that it's not really as free form of a game. However, the enemy A.I. is pretty solid. I think Crysis is more impressive because you can go where you want when you want and Drake's Fortune is on rails more or less. Graphically, however it's a powerhouse. It doesn't run as many FPS as Rachet & Clank but I think it's actually more detailed just in a subtle way.

Anyway, graphically I think the PS3 is about on par with the 360 in terms of effects. The number of objects on screen appears to be greater and the really big difference is the number of physics enabled objects I'm seeing. Not all of the games seem to demonstrate the machine's ability and I'm sure it's a pain in the butt to program but when it's used correctly the results are impressive. I wouldn't call it my favorite machine but it's a solid console, certainly a lot better than it's reputation.

yeah, I meant the effect the different physics settings has on the CPU in crysis seems minimal. I didn't really get any noticeable drop in FPS when playing with high physics compared to low. Even when driving through buildings and stuff. It was all pretty consistent if fairly low because of my GPU.

I can't really comment on the PS3 itself, I havent looked at one or been following the games, but a lot of 3rd party games have run very poorly on it. Almost shamefully..

Jeremy, you'll catch a brick in the eye if you say things like that in a fanboy zone like this.

There's not enough destructive games. Of the several people I know who own one of the Burnout games, the crash mode is the one they constantly go back to. I say bring on more truck dismount ragdoll crash-em-up goodness.

LMAO.
