3D game controller

Or something like this. If it actually works it could be interesting.

Ah, now this is interesting for a different reason! The other day I was imagining how a high resolution camera such as this would be used for films. Imagine filming a scene from about 8 different angles, then making a perfect 3D representation of that scene. Imagine making a 3D model of a set just by walking round it with a handheld camera. And the best one of all, I think, would be to film a scene using a tiny aperture (i.e. very deep depth of field); then in post-production you could use the depth mask to apply simulated depth of field, focus pulls etc. Of course, the focus pullers' union might object.

Actually, if they could get this to work on high end video cameras you could see the end of green screens. All compositing programs can us Z-Buffer data to chop images apart. This would also be useful for digital sets. The actor could easily be blended into the same space as the digital set because the computer has the z data to place him in front or behind things correctly.

You still really need multiple cameras, computers don't have very good 3D spatial memory. Which is things like knowing which hand is which when you put them behind your back and pull them out again. but this does still look good.

I think this seems to be more of a sensor than something that calculates where in the Z dimension the hands are, but I could be mistaken.

I think that is what the red diode lights are for, if they pulse in sequence the single camera could get a 3D image by determining the location of the red diode light reflecting off objects.

Still, I'll believe it works when I see it in action.

why shouldn't it after a single user used a Nintendo Wii mode, a IR Led Array and 2 reflective stickers on the finger to actually fully replicate the MS / Apple "table" stuff in front of a TV?
As the wiimote does not measure the time the IR travels, it has no knowledge of depth but if it did that, it would work.

Simply because this technology already works for a decade. Any distance measuring on building sites etc works exactly this way. sending an IR and measure the time it takes until it is back

as does RADAR which is ages old and bats/dolphins echo locations iir which are millenia old ;)

Yes but Radar does not use IR, thats a difference.
As well do neither of both devices just "spam the air" with waves to get at least something back. The work quite precisely with a specified portion of space.

Far less problematic than radar (which, btw, was discrete technology until recently and for a depth measuring, discrete results would be worthless! analog radar technology is quite new)

It'll never work. Most gamers are too lazy to hold their arms up for more than 5 seconds.

the eyetoy game "spank the monkey" is definatly not one for adults ;)

hyperactive kids with space to dance and play love this kinda thing ... its hard enough to get adults to try fps with joypads let alone pantomime holding a gun :))

In theory it should work fine, in practice that means it could be brilliant or laggy rubbish.

I for one hate this type of thing and the wii , Its great for a few hours then you find out you have to play all its games waving you hands round like a prat. If i want a flight experiance ill buy a flight stick thats how its done in the real thing, can you imagine flying a plane by holding your hand in mid air? after a few hours the plane would fall from the air because you can't hold your arm up because its gone numb. The only trouble with the Wii and to some amount the DS is that companys want to use the touch screen or wiimotes for every game even if it would be easyer and more playable to play in the standard way. I can see why they do it but what was the point in even releasing the control pad for the wii, i dont know anyone whos got one and ive never seen any option in games? Of coarse some games will be great like wii golf is fun but these controlers get in the way as much as they release you. Also alot of companies dont get it right Tiger woods is just really poor, alot of the time he will shot when your taking the back swing and what do they say about this oh yeah its a know bug. rant over, at least you can sell a wii for quite a high price on ebay.
