Recommend me a new mouse!

My left click has gone for a Burton, so I'm buying a new mouse. I've narrowed it down to these four:

The first two are optical, the second two laser, it seems. Anyone have experience of these?

I have had MS mice and Logitech mice. MS mice are generally a little larger, but have really stiff scroll wheels, which I found hurt my finger (had to bin the mouse because of it)

I have had 2 logitech mice since then and really wouldn't go anywhere else.

I would go for the logitech mice. They tend to be lighter and smaller. I recently tried a microsoft mouse that came with one of their keyboards and it was heavy and bulky and had a big footprint that caused a not-insigificant amount of friction with the mousepad hindering movement, and as such it was total crap for FPS's, so I brought it back.

The blue gamer one there looks pretty nice, with the extra buttons on top, and the buttons with seperation on the side so you don't hit the wrong one by accident.

The difference between laser and optical is laser ismore accurate. My old mouse just has a red LED and it won't work with a black mouse pad because it's not bright enough. But a laser mouse works just fine with one. My mouse would also probably have a hard time with a glass surface.

Hm... it would appear the extra buttons on top of the gamer mouse are actually for adjusting the sensitivity of the mouse though. Probably so you can switch to a low sensitivity when playing a sniper. So those wouldn't be useful for extra functions. Oh well.

I have 2 (one for home and one for work) earlier version of the blue logitech mouse. I also use it on a black table with no probs (it is optical, not laser).

there are actually 3 buttons on the top, one in front of the scroll wheel and two behind. They can be set up todo anything you want (switch weapons, use medipack...anythign that can be done using combinations of keyclicks)

there quite useful for browsing as they can be set up as auto scrolls (so you can just hold down the button instead of having to keep scrolling the mouse button).

I also always use the big thumb button as a middle mouse click, as I find it ergonomically nicer than clicking down the middle mouse button (this is actually something I started doing with the MS mouse I had, as the middle mouse click was so stiff on it, and being a 3D modeller, I use it alot).

If your budget can stretch, have a look at the new logitechs with 'MicroGear™ Scroll Wheel' technology. Its basically the scroll wheel but made out of metal and on a frictionless ball bearings system so you can just flick it and it will spin all the way down to the end of a document...really nice too.

Best thing is to go into your local computer store and try them all out, see what one best suites your hand and resting point. Then buy it online :)

I like MS ones.

I like cheap mice with a left, right, and middle button/wheel... ideally coming in at around £4-5 tops.

I like the MX Revolution myself - although these days I prefer a good TrackBall to a mouse.

Gamer with the "common" MX series here (MX 510 as I bought it a few days too early).
Like it. By far precise enough for anything you could use it, light, well designed to hold the hand without hurting after 2 hours of usage like Microsoft or Razor Mice.

Thanks everyone... Okay I'm narrowed down to the two Logitechs. Just wondering if the G5 justifies almost twice the price of the MX400 - it does look a nicer shape. Think I'll probably go for the MX400.

Perfect... especially for the likes of me being left handed... most of these ergo mice are about as useful as mudflaps on a tortoise to me.

G5 is a high precision gaming mouse with 2000DPI sensor.

If you aren't a gamer, a regular MX will definitely do the job as you won't hardly be able to tell the difference between 400 and 800 dpi ^^

The intellimouse would be my choice:

I had a Razorback (the best one at the time I can't remember which), and was hugely dissapointed with it, a very uncomfortable, jittery mouse.

Logitech bundle spyware and uther crud with their drivers, I want a mouse not a pile of useless trailware.

The Microsoft mouse has:

5 Buttons in the right place, a smooth action and just works.

Logitech does not bundle spyware with their mice. Gimme a break! :-)

I am a gamer, although I wonder just how much better the G5 would be than the MX400. I doubt I'd install the Logitech drivers (is that stupid?) I have an older intellimouse now - I like the button placement but the wheel is horrible. A previous older still intellimouse had a great wheel, but my current one feels like a wet sponge trying to get through a crowd at Grand Central Station.

I have a Microsoft Habu and like it very much!

Personally I prefer the plain MS Wheelmouse Optical.

One thing I really don't like about mice like the MS intellimouse explorer is that there is a bit of a 'gel' feel to the mousewheel, and you no longer feel little 'clicks' when you roll the wheel. Tactile feedback can be very convenient.

I purchased a Labtec (not to be confused with Logitec) mouse online. I was just wanting a mouse with left and right scrolling, but I was disappointed with what I got. The 'ergonomic design' doesn't work that well (its a rather large and bulky mouse), and the left-right scrolling buttons I thought would be useful require you to press it repeatedly so it will scroll a couple spaces at a time.

But I don't know about these logitec mice.

I'm really a fan of Logitech's MX Revolution mouse because of the smooth scroll wheel. It looks like they're bringing it to the cheaper models, too...

The Revolution, and even its laptop counterpart, are brilliantly designed. I held it once and was quite shocked by how comfortable the thing was!
Other peoples' mileage probably varies, but for me, it fits perfectly ;)

Logitech MX Revolution! Best mouse I ever purchased (unfortunately the most expensive, too). But the "scrollbutton unlocking" feature is wonderful, I couldn't live without it anymore.

Shawn, almost all Logitech products come bundled with Backweb "Foistware" as part of the driver. This continaully scans your system and files and pumps information back to Logitech and their partners. This does can cause lots of problems and will certainly sap your bandwidth.

After Logitech started doing this (around 2001), I stopped using their products. I didn't like the fact that they did this with no choice to opt out and without requesting permission, you also have no say over what they use that info for and who they give it to.

The Backweb site itself has overgone a major rework in the last few years as more and more people got annoyed with it. It USED to have lots of information for potenital deploying customer emphasising how much inforormation they could mine from an installed based of millions of users. Now they have become a bit more aware that people wondering what this new process that that is always sending data from their PC is, are coming to the the site too and didn't like that too much they are trying to convince people its a legitmate product. Kodak started using it too, providiing yet another reason to avoid both Logitech and Kodak products.

Because the backweb product is bundeld with the driver you don't get the option not to install it which is my main objection. Even if you don't care about other people having your information (and you should) it makes your system more vulnerable to attack from the web for no benefit and who wants to do that?

I'm pig sick of people doing driver software thinking they can do what they like with my PC. My Dad recently bought a printer and he put in a refurbished cartridge, now every time he prints a page he has to endure the stupid printer popping up not 1 but 3 messages bitching about it and has error messages in the logs complaining about a "serious error" this is bull. All because he installed the default driver that ships with the product. By all means warn the user about the "dangers" of using refilled cartridges, ONCE, not every time you print EVERY page. I'd like to make some of these people use some of the products they design for at least 3 years and see how they like it and how about charging LESS than £30 a cartidge? People who have retired and are on fixed incomes still need to print stuff out.

Better stop, I'm just ranting now.

I use a Logitech G7. It's perfect, never had a problem with it.

I hope you know that installing that is optional and choosing to not install it will not affect the functionality of the mouse. If you didn't know this, well, your loss -- you missed out on a lot of great mice.

(Glad I don't use Windows drivers :P)

What brand printer is that, Darkheart?

It boggles the mind what rare form of nincompoopery must be necessary to come up with these driver installers. It seems that every driver I install, with the rare exception being less noticed hardware like wireless cards, forces some kind of userspace GUI app that runs in the background, whether I like it or not.
For example, RealTech's audio drivers install a horrible and unimportant red volume control to the system tray, in addition to the existing one. Okay, double clicking opens Realtech's fancy audio preferences, but is there any reason whatsoever to have the audio preferences tray app always running and consuming memory? Is it really this much of a sacrifice to just stick the damn program in the start menu and accept that REALTECH AUDIO is not the center of the universe and does not deserve to paint ugliness over my task bar?

Maybe they allow you to choose not to install it but they didn't used to and I bet it still installs on the default (which 90% of their customers will use). I think (like most people) you have a bad experience with a company and their product and you tend to avoid them in the future and you really get a chance to put right the damage once done.

Evoluent Vertical Mouse. 2600DPI of gaming goodness. It looks weird, it takes 30 minutes to get used to it, but it's the best mouse I've ever used (and I'm really picky about mice).

It has a 4th and 5th button (little finger and thumb) which act as universal 'back' and 'forward' when browsing the web and also when performing common tasks in Windows, Outlook and probably a lot more. Immenseley useful.

Sounds like a pushed up MX 510 / 518 ;-)

I bought the G5, had a deal, got it for 40$. Was well worth it ;)

Liked the look of the G5, but in the end went for the cheaper MX400. Can't wait to get it, my current mouse is driving me bananas...

I only use Logitech mice and keyboards.
