Fantasy styled version of Quake/Unreal

IE Deathmatch/Capture Flag - multiplayer (not massive) which involve either individuals or teams/factions.

I am thinking of class based abilities rather than picking up weapons - so there'd be sorcerers and skeletons, barbarians and balrogs and the like.

If nothing like this exists, and I'm sure it must, then I may have to make something myself one day.

Thanks.

There will be soon - thanks for the great idea!

There was, it was called Legends of Might and Magic. It failed horribly because medieval stuff, magic, etc. does not translate well to multiplayer, considering these are all relatively slow things in games normally. Plus the game just downright sucked.

Yup, there are loads of games like this. Wheel of Time immediately springs to mind.

Dark Messiah had multiplayer.

Just had a look at those two - reviews for Legends of Might and Magic were pretty bad - and it definitely appears that it would play badly too judging by the gameplay described in the reviews.

Wheel of Time sounds more interesting, pity I haven't read the books to get a good grip on the background. Looks a bit more epic in scope than a simple frag fest, more sophisticated.

Hujiklo - ideas are good - plenty to go round...

Although I used Quake/Unreal as examples above I'm not sure if I was making one whether I'd go down the first person viewpoint route. H-H combat doesn't play so well from that perspective in my own opinion.

I think medieval stuff/magic etc could translate well to multiplayer - a bit of experimentation with some gameplay would be helpful. Melee combat in most CRPGS like Diablor is rather dull as it is just 'click click click' on the enemy with a small number of attack animations. However if it was done more like a "Street Fighter" style system with special moves executed with skill rather than because I have a stat that says I can do x damage in y seconds maybe that would work.

EDIT:

Perhaps a 'chat' based combat system - type 'magic words' into the interface to cast different spells with more difficult words / longer sentences used to cast more powerful spells? - it would also allow for neat counter measures to be used to 'dispel'/'reverse'/'absorb' spells cast by others?

First game I was thinking of is "HEXEN II"....
A fantasy style game with the QUAKE engine, with a few RPG elements in it. (Still a 1st person shooter)

(You could also say that of HEXEN I which was based on the DOOM engine).

HEXEN II has an inventory and even a few puzzles to solve in order to proceed and even some classes at the start of the game to choose from.

Yeh, this is definetely old news.

There was a well known Fantasy Quake mod for Quake and there have been many, many since then for various engines.

I liked Lands of Lore 2, back then.. I guess it could be labeled 'fantasy'.

First game I was thinking of is "HEXEN II"....
Yeah. Hexen, Heretic, etc. Plenty of boring formularic Fantasy First Person Shooters around as well. Although they really are preferable from greyish/brown industrial complexes, they are no more original.

something like this: http://www.dawnspire.com ?

Heretic and Hexen (and Hexen II) are the only one I can think of...

I probably shouldn't have used Quake Unreal as the example. I was more thinking of a kind of 'tournament' system of combat engagements between individuals controlling a single character. Kind of like gladiatorial combat in a fantasy setting with magic etc, not first person.

I don't want to narrow it to just first person shooters (I used Quake/Unreal as they were the first tournament/gladiatorial style games that came to mind) - it could be turn based, text based (like the one the JustLuke mentioned above), or anything.

There are so many different types of implementations of something like this and I was hoping to get some ideas of the various ones that have been done. Or perhaps - what hasn't been done so that something new could be made....

EDIT - even a multiplayer match 3 clone! I'm sure that would tickle Grey Alien's fancy...(joke)

Dark Messiah of Might and Magic, has singleplayer and multiplayer, uses ability and has something like MP campaigns to collect Experience over time. (Quake Wars adapted that idea)

Even thought it uses the HL2 engine and is no mod in the traditional sense (although it bases that much on it that it surely would have been doable as one. But it is that cheap now to buy it over steam that it makes no difference anymore)

the blokes that did bloodwych did a doomesque sequel called hex i think ... not to be confused with hexen
but thats almost as old as doom is

Savage?

What? The one that I mentioned used the Unreal engine.

Sorry JustLuke I thought you meant the WheelOfTime MUD which seemed to be similar to what you described. EDIT - and which described something similar to what I had in mind.

EDIT 2 - Just looked up the version that uses the unreal engine - looked like a good game, wonder if I'll be able to find it anywhere to give it a go...

Wheel of Time actually had good ideas but it has some serious flaws which actually caused its flop ...
It is at best a study object on how not to do it.
Even the Warcraft Mod to Counter Strike has a larger fanbase ;-)

Might want to check out shadowrun, that meant to have non-normal FPD stuff in it, don't think it's set in a fantasy setting though.

The game that will rule all and the one you are looking for is called Project Offset, look it up, it's what you want but much better and in epic scale ;)
