Photoshop 7. Scam or legit?

I recently purchased (against my good judgment) photoshop 7 from Ebay. Link Below.

I've done a lot of investigation in to the Ebay seller and he seems legit except for 1 neg feedback from a guy who has a few negs himself.

The guy Guaranteed that it can be registered with Adobe and it can be used to upgrade to CS3. The reason I bought it is because of the cheap upgrade to CS3 extended that I can get once I have it.

I used to have Photoshop CS2 but my younger brother needed it for his media course so I transfered the license to him. I've missed photoshop immensley which is why I tried to get this deal on EBay.

So my questions are: Am I looking at being conned? Is there only so much research you can do about an Ebay seller and at the end of the day just take the chance?

Well, if it hasn't been registered like he says, then maybe you can still register it and get the upgrade. It may or may not be technically legal to transfer a software license from one person to another if the license agreement forbids that, but if it hasn't been used, I wouldn't feel too bad about it.

As you can see, they're identical, save for a small bit of black text in the lower left corner on the image on the ebay site. It's possible they changed the cover design slightly.

If you're that worried about it, why not call Adobe to verify it hasn't been registered? If the guy is legit I'm sure he'd be happy to give you the info Adobe needs.

Well I can't find out if it's registered until I get it. He's provided the tracking number for it and it's on its way to me. I should get it for the weekend if not Monday Next Week.

The thing is I asked him if it was guaranteed to register with Adobe and he said he Guaranteed it. This was before I purchased.

I guess I'll find out soon. The good thing is I paid via paypal so here's hoping I can get my money back minus the $25 paypal charge for resolving a dispute.

Or, being it nearly christmas, I could end up more stuffed than a Turkey.

I reckon you'll probably be ok if you've thoroughly checked out the seller, I've had pretty universally good service from places like Ebay and Amazon. I've been pleasantly suprised at the large number of decent helpful people. I think as long as you check out what your buying and who your buying from and stay away from "too good to be true" stuff your pretty safe.

Licenses bound to physical disks can ALWAYS be transfered. No mather what the EULA tells.
thats a physical right of anyone, at least in europe (companies like Adobe and Discreet already lost several runs to the court against that so they can't come up with that any more anywhere in EU)

Thats why Adobe tries to get digital licenses spread as far as possible instead of physical ones.

Yeah I Adobe gave up on not allowing License transfers. You can now speak to Adobe and transfer your license to someone else. This is how I transfered my CS2 license to my brother. I just got a license transfer form and sent it off.

With the Photoshop 7 I've bought the seller clearly states that it's unregistered so I shouldn't need to go through the license transfer stuff. Hopefully when I get it I can register it and then Upgrade to CS3.

It depends on your local laws whether and how a license can be transfered. And depending on the country, it also won't matter whether that license has already been registered or not - Adobe would have to sell you the upgrade anyway. In other countries, however, it would be exactly the opposite.

You should contact your local Adobe dependency and ask them. Or better: Ask them twice, because you might get three different answers from them... (That usually happens to me when I contact Microsoft Germany directly with some licensing questions.) :-p

Or send an email to a competent computer magazine in YOUR country.

There's a lot of counterfeit copies of Photoshop on Ebay that are hard to tell apart from the real thing. I bought CS3 on there and only realised it was counterfeit when a) the registration process didn't require me to activate the product and b) it installed the extended version instead of the normal version. Thankfully I managed to get my money back but others might not be so lucky.

If you call Microsoft licencing three times, they'll give you four different answers...

So Swifty, was it a bust or what? I gotta know now...

I'm still biting my nails as I'm thinking that £120 for photoshop 7, unregistered is too good to be true.

It arrived this morning. The serial number was valid and I succesfully registered it with Adobe. The seller was good on his word.

If anyone in the UK wants a copy he's selling another one. Jump in there and buy it as you won't find an unregistered Photoshop 7 for less than £200.

Now I can upgrade to CS3. :)

I still hate myself that my 20€ PS6 never was upgraded when I had the chance to do so :-( (ebay OEM but registred with Adobe through me :) )

I used to have Photoshop CS2 but gave it to my brother. I went and bought PaintShopPro but going from Photoshop CS2 to Paintshope Pro was a big step backward. PSP just doesn't come any where near Photoshops features.

I'm just glad I've got another copy of Photoshop again and this time at a bargain of just over £100. The upgrade to CS3 will cost me about £160 coz I don't want the Extended version so all in all I got Photoshop CS3 for £260. :)

Glad it worked out Amon, my experience has been pretty good with E-Bay/Z-Shops/etc there are always a few "dodgy geezers" selling stuff which is "too good to be true"; but there are a lot of genuinely good deals from nice, helpful people too.
