I'd guess the bottom half was a midget, and the top half was someone who was born without any legs at all (I forget what they call that though, but people like that are often used in "saw-the-body-in-half" acts like this).

im leaning towards the torso-girl and a midget too (or is it "colonically impaired" and "vertically challenged" individuals? I forget :/ )

Criss Angel uses plants. The woman who laid down on the bench is not the same as the one that got "separated". The "upper half" is a woman has had a hemicorporectomy, which basically is an amputation at the pelvis.
what you mean after he laid her down, they switched the camera off, then changed the woman over and the whole audience (or the audience was fake?)
I was watching carefully and when the woman lies down he supports her head, this might look like he was being kind but maybe it was a tricky manoeuvre for the midget in the legs to hold onto the person on top. Then when he did the separation, just after the separation he can be seen sorta closing the hole at the top of the legs where people might look in. It's all very subtle.
