What's bad for you health? - coding all night!
Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/What's bad for you health? - coding all night!
2:30am and still up coding. This is an early night for me based on the past month or so. I tell you what, finishing a game to a deadline is not for the lighthearted! Log says over 12 hours worked today on my game. Not too bad compared to some 18 hour days I've done before, but I also had to do some framework support, some financial admin etc. and it all adds up! I managed to play a game with my boys for one hour today, so that's good going (relatively speaking)...
Having less sleep from coding all day and all night plus suffering stress from deadlines isn't good for your health. Your immune system drops, you feel tired and sluggish, and start eating "comfort" food. Plus you stop moving around as much so get less fit. Add onto that the fact that it's the Winter so you put in central heating (which apparently makes people have more chest complaints) and then you throw in two schoolboys to the mix who both have bad coughs...it's only a matter of time before the crash!. I'm still ok though, not great but OK...
I'm gonna get a nice massage next week when I'm done and play loads of games! And go to bed on time...
hmm, I wonder if coding all night makes you more aggressive. I doubt it. More irrational perhaps but more likely to just give in...
Take a whole night off. Your wife will love you for it.
It's an easy trap to fall into. You don't really gain any time, your sleeping pattern just drifts into another time zone. Still, it's quite nice coding in the early hours - no distractions.
yeah definitely no distractions.
Tomorrow will be a whole night off, ah, then I'll get the kids up on Sunday so she can have a lie in.
4:15 and still going strong. Having fun testing my game, it's very addictive and nice to play you see. Anyway, playing it yourself is essential for spotting bugs. Just send of the V1.00 Release Candidate an hour ago.
It was beta tested by 800+ people the last few days, wow. They filled out a questionnaire at the end. Got some interesting Video Card Driver errors, a few sound stutters and it not working at all on some PCs, but it was a low %, like 6% or something, so not too bad. Most of the players got how to play it, a few didn't...guess that's normal.
70% of people said they'd buy it haha, of course that would never really happen or it'd be the highest converting game in the history of casual games haha. Be interesting to see what that turns into in real converstion rate figures.
86% of people said they'd recommend it to other people with a rating of 3/5 or higher (64% of those were 4/5 and 5/5) :-)
As I always say, the still of the night causes a storm in the mind!
I'ts 4:40 am here.
Keep up maggots - I'm so far ahead I am coming back round to lap you.
5:17 ;-p. You know how when you stay playing a game into the night you sorta get to a new level where you are knackered and wired at the same time and if you go to bed you'll just lie there not sleeping? Well that's where I'm at. G'night!
Hey, I am up at this crazy hour too..... except, it's actually only 11:24 here ;-)
I'm up. It is only 9:40pm. :)
I'm still up - 5:43am.
I am the greatest.
07.22 am, been up all night.
But that's because I'm working the night shift. :P
Still, found some time to do some coding on a small project. Yay me.
7:09am here. Best time to code is during the early hours.
I guess I'll get a couple of hours sleep soon, but it does take a while to drop off as your brain is still busy in coding mode :)
I've been up all day - it is 6:51 pm here.
I've put my foot down on this monotonous cycle. It's bad for your health. 'If this called living I don't want it' I told myself. Marriage and family life suffered terribly and it was all my fault. Now my game can just damn-well wait until I'm ready to work on it
Keep up the good work Grey, it will be worth it in the end. On a side note Derek Yu releases Aquaria on the 7th, hope your game releases don`t clash ;)
Jason.
Shhhh - the poor lads fallen asleep at his keyboard...
...let's leave him to snooze away - keep quiet now! Switch off the light - goodnight.

I agree with Simon, you might feel like your getting more done but in reality your performance DOES drop off rapidly once you get tired. That means more mistakes, less productivity, your time is not spent in the most effective way.

My day job is quite easy (2nd level IT support, we are the guys that actually fix probs when the monkeys manning the phones dont know what their doing) I can shut down my brain for the most part and save my mental energy for the evening, especially during new PC roll-outs :)
Anyone to beat my 110 hours non-stop-non-sleep on The Party '06 (iirc) including the bustrips and the day before/after? :P
But alas, couldn't do that these days anymore.
This is crazy, I am a genetic night owl too, but I know I need 5 hours sleep unless I want my immun system to drop. I can get away with a few days with 3 hours of sleep. I usually catch up over the day, falling in coma for a few minutes here and there. Usually one or two days of 5-7 hours sleep are enough for me to regenerate, 8+ and I'm am a zombie with bad headaches.
Glad I have a tft or else my eyes would explode.
Grey, did you notice I didn't torture you with support questions for at least a full day now ;)
Had a great evening yesterday with friends and family and lots of very good wine, when I was at home again I squashed a friend at FarCry and continued writing at my design document until 3am, but my wife let me sleep until 10:30 :)
Hey the sun is shining and it's a nice and warm blue sky day, at least here in Germany in Bonn....
sounds great! I'm moving to germany.
well it was raining yesterday and they tell it'll rain tomorrow ;) I heard california had some more reliable sunshine...
Wow some of you were up even later!
Grey, did you notice I didn't torture you with support questions for at least a full day now ;)
haha, yeah I noticed, but did you notice that you still got replies?
California, now there's an idea...
QuickSilva: Wonder how that game will be released? Probably not on BFG, so it won't really clash. Wonder if the audience will be different too as that's an action game really.
No I didn't probably there's another spammer with the same profile ^^ Philipp here, babygirl 7m and daughter 5y, remember?
Oh sun is gone, it's getting dark clowded, California her I come, or better play farcry with ocean, sun, sand, nice birds ahhhhhh....
