Speedball 2 Tournament

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Speedball 2 Tournament

I just saw it on Steam, anyone getting this? I didn't even know they were working on this game.

I will be pre-ordering, Looks good.
I remember playing speedball back on the Amiga, excellent game. Hopefully this will be too.

Isn't Speedball still owned by the Bitmap Brothers/Renegade? But no, I'm not getting this for the price they're asking.

The price does seem high, so won't be getting it straight away. And given the very low profile, I suspect it's not that good. But the trailer looks good - complete with requisite cry for "ice cream!".

heh I loved this game on the amiga, but I think in this case the more dynamix camera in the screenshots might get in the way of gameplay.

Antony and I started a game a bit like this once, early on when Bmax first came out. Shame he never stuck around to finish his Trinity engine and the game. Think it would have been really cool.

$35 does sound a bit steep to me too. It should be $20 I recon. If you have a 360 you might be in luck,a Speedball game is coming out on Xbox live arcade, not sure if its this version or the original though.

Agreed. Hopefully they will get it right though.

Valve recently somehow missuse their online platform anyway.

From what I remember, Valve and EA stated back at the beginning of online buying of games that the main pro is that you:

1. Do not need to have physical publishment
2. no distribution etc etc
-> this would make it cheaper.

But the only thing I see now is that this stuff is as expensive as in shops just with the serious problem that there is no second had as no physical media -> no resell.

To me sounds like right now, all are ripped off through this platform.

I especially feel ripped off by Portal ... 20$ for 3.5 hours?
Thats a bad joke, seriously.

heh, yeah. I waited and bought crysis and the witcher at the store even though I could get them quicker online. At the end of the day if I have to pay full price for a download, I'd much rather wait and have a nice DVD case, Disk and printed manual.

To me those are worth $10, and direct downloads of full price games should be about that much cheaper.

I wouldn't mind paying the extra if I thought that the developer earnt the difference though.

@Dreamora: you need 3.5 hours for Portal. You're lucky then, I saw the credits after 45 minutes...

Ugh... why Steam... oh well. No sale...

thevideogamer: I didn't hurry in level 18 and actually finished all challenges in that time which are much more interesting than the general levels ^^
getting to the credits isn't the problem as you need like 15-20 mins to get to level 18 which is twice as long as 1-17 together ^^

Agree with you Evak up to the point that trash isn't worth 20-40$ and expensions especially aren't worth it, at least not to me. 1.5 years ago I had to pay the amount for a full new game that I now have to pay for an expansion.
thats just a sick joke and just shows into what a big thick brickwall the gaming market is currently heading.

Only nintendo is going the other way round ie the games become cheaper instead of more and more expensive at a massive rate.

Well, but the Wii lacks good games. There are like 3 games out now that would be interesting for me (Resident Evil 4, Super Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime 3) but just 1 of them is a must have (RE4). 2008 holds absolutely no must have titles for me, only "might be interesting" ones... The DS is cool, though. So much to play, so little time :P

Don't know, mario kart with bikes, 16 players and online is kind of a must have to me :-)
But you are right, beside that there aren't that many must haves.
But at least the Wii has some. On PC, there is Spore, on XBox 360 the next one to me is fable 2 and on PS3 the only one is the "we are sorry but sony went out of business" one, same as on PSP ;-)

Which means at best I might be planning to get a X360 (even if it would be more due to XBLA than to retail eye candy trash), but no sony stuff.

Well the last game I played which was actually developed by the Bitmap Brothers was the PC port of Namco's KillSwitch. It wasn't a particularly highly rated game on PC or consoles, as I recall, but I thought they made a decent job of it, and enjoyed it very much.

If I can be bothered to dig out my wireless receiver for my 360 controlled, I might be tempted, but I wouldn't want to play with keyboard and/or mouse.

I think the bitmaps are another overrated bunch. Every one of their games except Cadaver and SB2, I had to ask myself was I enjoying this? And it turned out I wasn't. They got noticed because they had two awesome artists working for them: Coleman and Malone. I was playing just to see the great graphics. I'm intrigued to see if they know how to capitalise on Speedball with this latest version.

And it turned out I wasn't.
The Chaos Engine is one of the hands down best games ever.

Agreed! I played through it last month. UAE+Xbox360 controller on my Mac. I never liked Speedball this much and the videos i've seen from it don't change this.

On the 360 there are Mass Effect, Halo 3 and Assassins Creed. On the PS3 right now there's only Ratchet & Clank but the future holds Little Big Planet, Metal Gear Solid 4 (I'm a huge fan of that series), Final Fantasy 13 and Killzone 2. All in all it's the following for me right now:

Wii has currently 4 titles I would be interested in (Metroid Prime 3, Resident Evil 4, Super Mario Galaxy and Super Paper Mario); RE4 and MP3 I'd buy for sure. There are 6 titles coming out in the future that interest me but none of them are a must have for me.
XBox 360 has 6 titles out that I'm interested in, 4 I'd buy for sure. 9 titles coming out in the future and I'd buy 5 of them for sure but they are all coming for PS3 as well (Dark Sector, Devil May Cry 4, Silent Hill 5, Resident Evil 5 and Soul Calibour 4). PS3 right now has 4 interesting titles of which I'd buy 1 (Ratchet & Clank) for sure. 13 titles coming in the future from which I'd buy 9 for sure. Looks like the PS3 is for me 'eh?

Don't forget Brütal Legend (PS3 and Xbox360)...

If you took away Chaos engine GFX it would not have 10% the charm. It was a basic shooter with the options of some pretty dumb A.I partners. I forgot about this game - I enjoyed it, but not as much as Cadaver. I never even looked at CE2 once they changed the artist.

I'm always amazed at how much complaining americans do over prices that are usually close to half what most of the EU pays (including the weak dollar)...$35 would put this roughly at the same price it was on the Amiga.

Or a friend.

I did. Not as good, because the game was now competitive rather than cooperative.

I live in the EU. My point was that the game doesn't really appear to be worth more than a tenner, regardless of the devaluation of the US Dollar.

Also the reason things cost less in the US, is because not as many people have as much disposable income.

lso the reason things cost less in the US, is because not as many people have as much disposable income.

Is this true, do people in the EU have HUGE amounts of extra money to throw around? Because I would not say American's don't have much disposable income.

Not really, but you're not considered poor in the EU if you don't drive.

The thing isn't that your considered poor if you don't drive. It's just theres a lot more urban sprawl without easy access to shops since strip malls off of the freeway are most popular. And non existant or rubbish public transport.

If I want to go 70 miles to San Francisco on the train, I have 6 trains a day coming down from Seattle, often 2 hours late, and I would have to leave San Fran around 6 or get stranded. Trains seem to average about 35 - 50 miles an hour so its 2x faster to just jump in a car and drive. Especially when the train stops at Emmeryville and you have to catch a bus to get across the bay bridge. Can take 2-3 hours v's 65 minutes in a car.

Thats one example, but it seems pretty typical. Your pretty much forced to drive here whether you like it or not.

Things are very different in the UK since towns are more people oriented and city planning began before WW1. Here everyone already had a car when many of the cities were born, and whole estates of same houses just grow up wherever in the suburbs. Roads are HUGE too, a regular 2 lane street can be the width of a UK dual carriageway since chances are your going to have 2 car lanes, 2 bicycle lanes big enough for a car, and 2 parking lanes, possible a central divider too.

So not at all pedestrian friendly. Luckily I live in a older model neighbourhood. they are starting to change their ways and plan residential areas more like pre war community friendly towns. Here's a web page comparingmy area it to the rest of the city.

There was an original XBox game called DeathRow that was pretty much and FPS 3D version of Speedball. It was a great game if you were a fan of Speedball.

The Chaos Engine is one of the hands down best games ever.

Magic Pockets is still up there in the platform stakes too.

It was a basic shooter with the options of some pretty dumb A.I partners.

It is still tonnes of fun to this day and I don't know, I think the AI was smarter than some of my buddies. I agree about CE2 though. Rubbish.

I nearly died of boredom with Magic Pockets. Big, empty, repetitive, slow, levels.
Gods was better but even that, aside from the excellent GFX was as average as you could get.
Cadaver still rules for me..it had the grip of a python in a vat of super-glue.
