To me it rotates differently depending on what part of the dancer i'm looking at, wierd!

I saw this on facebook. I can make it rotate either way I want.

I think it means what you see when you first look at it, try best out of 10, i score about 7/3 to clockwise.

If i concentrate i can make her go backwards. So i guess im a dreaming, fantasy motivated philosophical risk taker!

some times though her leg loops from 4oclock to 8oclock when i do that ... makes me wonder why she dont fall down :p

I just can't see how anyone would be able to interpret that rotating anti-clockwise, even though most people apparently do...

Easy to make it change direction. Look at the foot that stays put, so to speak, and then concentrate on it going the other way round - the rest of the body soon follows.

Apparently, therefore, I use both sides of my brain. No wonder I'm so indecisive. Or not.

Sometimes clockwise other times anticlockwise...can reverse it by looking at the hips and imagining the 'front' leg is on the other hip =)

Seems to be reversable when the extended leg is pointing to the right.

After about 10 minutes of staring, I see her turn into a pidgeon.

Clockwise, takes a lot of concentration to go to anticlockwise.

You can take a test, do some right brain tasks and then look at the image, then some left brain tasks and see if it makes a difference.

I did some head calculations and she turned clockwise, then I visualized an aerial combat situation and she turned anticlockwise....myth busted.

If I keep it on the edge of my focus (sort of look at it from the corner of my vision, before looking directly at it), I can choose whichever direction I want to look at it in.

When I first look at it though, it goes anti-clockwise.

found an easy way of reversing it, blink your eyes fast at the right speed like a strobe and she will change directions regulary!

Anyway, it was clockwise for me for ages and then I noticed that if I look to the lower left hand side of the window, she changed direction in the corner of my eyes, then I was able to look back at her and see her spinning anti-clockwise, weird! But when I looked at the feet, she went back clockwise...

Yeah, me too. However, despite my... Intense... Concentration, I was absolutely bustin' my brain to make her go the other way. (I saw counter-clockwise first.) Suddenly, however, for no reason at all, she reversed; not only that, I wasn't even aware of the change at first. When I finally noticed it, however, I was suddenly able to change her at will.
That's how it goes for me; I spend ages tackling a problem almost to the point of insanity, then I finally solve it, and I never have problems with it or anything similar again.

Look at her closely. There is one frame where her leg passes in front of the other, and you can see an outline showing clearly which leg is in front of the other, making it definitely anti-clockwise. Which I'm sure was not intended! Funnily enough, when I first looked I saw clockwise, but as soon as I saw the outline it snapped to clockwise. In most tests like this I've always been a left-brainer. Personally though, I think it's all a lot of balls.

It's a con. The image rotates clockwise for so long then rotates anti-clockwise and then again back to clockwise.

When you think about it the rotating female image going one way then the other, reminds me of women drivers, you think they are about to go one way then completely go in the opposite direction.

Nope. I just now saved the image and looked through all 34 frames and it just has her rotating 360 degrees then it loops back to the start.

If I had the time I would examine the web page source to see if there is a yo-yo script some where, or it could mean that I use each side of my brain every 30 seconds ( That would explain why I think I'm going insane, am insane or both :-)

Is there some sort of a conspiracy here? The model is rotated anti clockwise and there's no possible way for an animation to magically reverse itself using the power of your brain. Is there an internet joke somewhere I'm not familiar with that I've fallen for?

It rotates clockwise for me, but when i read the text to the left of the screen, out the corner of my eye she starts moving anti-clockwise.

I think its the background color being a light gray and the model completely black making it look like it's flat and 2D. Have you seen the picture where you first look at it, it looks like a young lady? But when you actually look at the lines you notice that it looks like an old lady too.


I had my sister look at it the same time I was and when she said it had started going anti-clockwise it was still going clockwise for me. So I don't think it has a script in it. If there was thats one unreal script.

me and my other half did it together and we were getting different results, sometime we both saw her clockwise/anti-clockwise and sometimes one of us saw her going clockwise and the other anti-clockwise.

its not fake its simply an optical illusion. It works because there is no surface detail to focus on and its a symetrical animation. (The shadow of her with her back to you is exactly the same as when she is facing you)

It does whatever your initial subconscious tells it to do. Good example, take a windows button when not pressed in. Is it pressed in or out? You think it is out because your brain logic always makes you think that light comes from above, when of course its really flat. If you concentrate hard enough you can make it look pressed in (if you imagine light coming from below) It is difficult to do because your brain logic tells you otherwise, but free your mind and you will realise the truth, there is no spoon :)

It somehow reminded me of the great flash animation from melon dezign.

At first just anti-clockwise, then just clockwise. Now I can pretty much control it. There was a brief but very upsetting period when she just jerked back and forth instead of doing full cycles.

I think it's easier to change the direction by focusing on the knee of the leg that does the circling.

No matter how hard I try, always counter-clockwise.

In that case I think perhaps this is more of an optical illusion than any sort of brain test and the rest of you just havn't looked very closely. Given perspective it is impossible to view this animation as rotating clockwise.

Her leg is smaller when it is facing away. Once you realise this you realise that not only is there a spoon, but there is a full set of cutlery in my cupboard.

Any direction for me. I've seen a few of those and they stopped entertaining me long time ago. Used to love that kind of stuff when I was a kid though.

Her foot is broken. It points towards you, then it passes by her body and suddenly its pointed away from you. Just looks like a broken animation to me. She turns clockwise for 2 seconds then switches to counterclockwise for 2 seconds.

Cover up her legs and its very interesting. Could be either way.

Thanks for posting this! Anticlockwise at first then I realised I could switch between the directions simply by looking at the left or right side of the frame.

I saw a pigeon.

Firstly I could only notice her in Anti-Clockwise...wise.

After much time watching it, I realised the way to swap directions whenever I wanted.

EDIT: Just realised, looks like a fake animation. Notice the arm. Whenever you think you see her changing directions, the arm shouldn't have.
Also, At some point in that GIF, her still foot starts spinning in the opposite direction of her body creating confusion (thus making the spectator thinks he actually saw her change direction) - can you guys notice that?

The model moves anti-clockwise only, it's nothing to do with your brain. Look at the animation frame by frame and she is moving anti-clockwise, only people capable of deluding themselves will see her rotating clockwise.

Darkheart

The animation actually goes 180 degrees one way, then 180 degree the other way. When the foot spins round the body, but when it's about to pass the leg for the second time, the animation jumps. Just look at the shadow of the foot. It just sways from side to side.

Very interested illusion though. Not physically possible though :o)

I know precisely how this could be interpreted as counter-clockwise, but I still can't see it as anything other than clockwise spinning.

Strange, the first 5 seconds it was anti-clockwise but when I just looked down at my keyboard and then wathced her again it was clockwise and it didn't change since then...

It's an optical illusion... Those of you trying to overanalyze it as fake or a broken animation are the ones needing their heads examined.

Take it for what it is. An illusion. Some people see one thing some another.

I hope this doesn't fall under the realm of 'thread necromancy' but this just did the rounds at work earlier today and after looking at it again I can see it both ways. We all seemed to find that it could be seen going in the other direction by simply standing a few feet away from the screen, looking at the image, then turning away from it for a second or two and then looking back at it.

I was quite surprised though to see it go the other way, especially - it works quite well when a few people are watching it at once, not sitting in front of the PC but a standing a few feet away.

That dancer did not even try to dance counterclockwise for me ...
Which is funny as I am a highly analytically, rational, logic thinking person.
My only problem is that I have a extremely good 3D imagination so my head takes the head and hair movement, combines it with the vertical axis and it is clear, which way it turns.

Nothing like "visual fake" or the like.
At best a by purpose vertical clone of her to play "shadow" which does not work. Light from behind as shadow is in front of her. Yet still, her shadow disappears when her legs look in the direction of "behind" although they should be more visible then.

When I first looked at it I saw clockwise, then looked at the text and back and saw counter, and every time i looked away it seemed to change.

HOWEVER

After looking at Darkheart's comments I looked at the image again (while the browser played it) and just focus your attention on the shadow on the ground. You will notice the shadow moving counter clockwise meaning the leg moves to the front, then behind, then to be back, then to the front. When I look back up at the model I see it moving counter then it seems to change direction but then I look back down at the shadow and see it moving counter.

The model is not shaded, nor can you get contrast, so you can argue it is going either way, but the shadow clearly goes counter clockwise.
