Wireless Connection troubleshooting?

Bit broad of a topic, but basically, I got a semi-decent wireless-G LinkSys router here, and for some reason, I can't keep a connection to a server for more than roughly 5 minutes (since it varies slightly).

Any ideas on ways to go about trying to fix it? Problem applies to both my laptop and Wii, even though the wireless connection itself reports as excellent (better damn well be since the router is only a foot away). The connection itself isn't lost, but whatever app or game I'm in will, and it's driving me nuts.

Only played with the wireless channel to no avail, are there other things I should toy with to get this working?

Buy a better router? Disable any type of "turbo" mode or any other non-standard crap the router might have enabled by default.

Do you mean you are loosing internet or the local connection?

When it drops out, try and connect to your gateway in Ie
usualy 192.168.1.1 (or .0.1) If you can then you know its either with the wireless card or the wireless part of the router.

I just lose whatever connection I currently have to whatever server. The wireless connection is still there, just I may get a 'connection to server may have been reset' error or something along the lines of that.

I bought a LinkSys some time back because it was more expensive that my previous routers and therefore i thought it would be better. Oh how I was wrong.

No matter what I tried I could just not get the thing to connect.

In the end I took it back to the shop and bought a much cheaper D-Link. Within 5 mins of getting back home I was hooked up and running smoothly.

Call you IP helpdesk and ask them for assitance and if with their help it still doesn't work - get a D-Link :)

I've had more trouble with D-Link in the past then I'd want to bother with.

My problem here is something I just need to fix somehow, as the thing worked flawlessly with my wireless devices back before I moved into my college dorm, will properly just contact LinkSys's customer support for shits and giggles.

Could just be interference then. Not much you can do about that. Maybe cover the walls in tin foil or if you're more creative, build a Faraday cage? :o>

I don't know how dorms are in Canada, but if they're anything like in Denmark you have about eight square meters of total room. And everyone is going to have a device that emits some kind of radio waves.

These concrete walls are pretty thick, wouldn't they help with the interference any?

so correct, concrete walls + wireless = bad.

If i remember from physics, the problem with mega high frequency (like wireless) is it doesnt bounce around the room (much) till it escapes like lower frequencies, it penetrates the concrete and gets severely weakened.

Sorry, at first i thought you meant you were connecting through concrete, so yeah should be a good shield :P

I had that exact same problem with the router Orange broadband provided.

Simply changing the wi-fi channel from it's default channel to channel 2 fixed the issue for some strange reason.

Guess I'll try more channels then, the previous 4 I tried had no effect.

No. Wifi typically operates on a frequency of 2.4Ghz, which roughly translates to a wavelength of 12cm. So unless your reinforced concrete wall has a fairly tight mesh much less than 12cm apart, it won't do anything for stopping interference.

Wifi is typically a useless pile of crap that drops connections at random and runs at a fraction of any speed they advertise.

Have you tried messing with the Wireless Network Connection Propertie on both machines?
