I am worried it could be true. I believe it is already happening - I cannot generally stream videos from YouTube.

Just imagine if China was unleashed onto the WWW? Aren't they contained behind some kind of Chinese government controlled internet (something like that)?

There are millions of people in many poor 2nd and 3rd world countries - those countries are clamouring their way into technology lifestyles.

Yeah Korea has faster Internet than we do. At the end of the day, if you pay more, you'll probably get a better service.

..I wouldnt be that brave to underestimate Korea or generally speaking Asian countries..those guys developing damn quickly...Im living with them and I see whats going around...

Shame it all depends on where you live, I'd kill to have the speed rates Sweden has for example, their supreme high-speed for the cost of dial-up where I live....

But then again, I pay for 24 mbit or whatsitcalled, and only get about 14 since I live in a small town that most people haven't even heard of. It might take quite a while before the companies can get arsed to update the hardware they are using around here. :P

Better than the 2mbps my parents are paying out the ass for, since our only means of high-speed (at home that is, unsure what speed the cable my dorm here is since it's shared via 1000 bloody students) is via wireless.
(and that's with a craptastic 20gb bandwidth limit)

Anyways, gridlock, not happening at the rate those new discoveries are coming along. Don't those high-end research labs have a connection that uses a special optic fibre connection (or something along the lines of that) that offers up to 5000 gbps speeds?

I get 20mb full with VM. They do have this stupid speed capping from 4pm til midnight where if you download more than 3gb your speeds is capped to 6mb but from the news I've been reading Virgin Media are planning on focusing their efforts on Broadband rather than trying to compete with Sky over TV.

There's rumours that VM may do away with speed caps alltogether and focus on delivering fast broadband via the fibre network.

So when Josh says that England has a third world Tele-communication system he's right but only in regards to BT and the DSl network. VM are capable of offering superioir speed svia FO.

Does anyone follow what extrapolation means? Just like Moore's Law for transistor count, the exponential rate of technology is going way beyond what some people will have you understand. Last year, IBM came out with a chip that could pump out 2~4TByte of data per second via silicon optocouplers, this means data will no longer be routed and converted into electrical signals, but will be optical all the way to the computer. As the demand for bandwidth raises, so too will the ease to break new ground in communication, thus, lowering the price. Don't worry about -- or give into the over-hyped scare mongering. :)

Yeah I know :) stable 100Mbit baby yeah! Sweden was recently rated as having the best service in the world (or mabe that was europe and US :/) Im paying not much more than i was for 2Mbit back home, and i get IPTV and IPphony through this line too.

Its probably scaremongering by the b.government to justify spending on our crap system back home.

Back when I was a lad, all we could get was 14kbps. Uphill. Both ways. In the snow.

Seriously -- "only 14 mbit"? Up until last year, 1.5mbit was the fastest available in my area. cable, DSL, wi-fi or cell, all 1.5mbit max. No matter how much money you were willing to throw at the carriers, that was it.
(Now I can get 3mbit over DSL, and that's the max available)

Especially outside of the major metropolitan areas, broadband in the US is held back big time by all the competitors imposing the same limits, pretty much giving you no alternatives. Plus I bet we get to pay more for that privilege as well.)

Solution -> Bring back "SAVE AS".

im running on a 3 data modem at 3.6Mbps (im assuming bits not bytes) and generally avoid youtube as it will never stream
plus i also have a 3gb monthly data allowance that i dont want to waste on trivial tat ... just the good shite stuff from youtube please ;)

ive someties come close to shutting down my pc only to find a forgotten youtube window with a finally 100% cached clip

Don't be silly. The Chinese have had access to the internet for years. The government simply maintains a dynamic list of censored sites, blocked by sophisticated firewall software. But such sites are like grains of sand in the sea. Unless you're interested in Taiwan or Tibetan independence, Falun Gong, or Chinese democratic reform, you'd probably never even notice the online censorship.

As far as the internet running out of capacity goes - that's nonsense too.

I remember when it took aaages to download one single pr0n image. You was practically finished by the times you saw the nasty bits!
And that was before this interwebs thing! I had an old UNIX terminal connected to my modem, and I was browsing around on bulletin boards. No colours! Only ASCII!

Wen Oi waz a laaad, I remember when...900/1200 bps was the speed from my BBC model B, prestel chunky text only, uphill, both ways, in the snow, in shorts, carrying wood for the fire and a bucket of water from the well ;)
I was about 10 at the time.

I started with a 300 baud thingy that had to have a handset placed in a cradle... Actually wish I'd kept the darn thing too.

To be honest i really cannot remember the baud of "my" BBC modem (it was actually dads from work and "very expensive":)
I think i had 900/1200 written on its enourmous box with lights though, probably state of the art at the time Lol!

The fancy name was Accoustic Coupler.

broadband is killing off some book bundled cd's
tis cheaper for publisher and consumer (and sort of environmentally friendly) to put the download link in the book than a CD
plus you can dl the data without buying the book :) (in most cases no proof of purchace required)

i remember when you couldnt buy a pc mag without some AOL 3.5" begging to be reformatted on the cover
then they got wise to the cost and stamped a gazillion CD's instead (instead of it being a folder on the mags own bloody cd)
