I really want to know what the hell people accomplish with those courses....my roommate is currently in 2nd-year game design at my college, and from what I've seen, aside from some basic scripting, it's just playing around in UnrealED.......
"Game design" is too friggen' broad for it to be worth anything to anyone imo.
OMG, that advert is soooo lame! There's a HELL of lot to proper game design. More than "yeah man, let's stick this sound effect there" and then forgetting to note it down anywhere.
The devil's in the details as they say. I've just spent over 50 hours just getting the sound/music/speech right for my game I'm not even the musician/sound engineer!

Not a lot, but they get a nice posh bit o paper that makes HR departments salivate more. Other than that i can imagine its a waste of time, and you can learn just as much yourself with some good books, the net and a lot of practise.
