Do Gameboy games work on DS?

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Do Gameboy games work on DS?

I know that GBA games work on DS, but I've seen some classic old GB games like R-type and Turrican that I'd love to play on my DS.

Any ideas?

Nope, it's just GBA backward compatible.

They should work. Haven't tested it on my DS, though.

Hi, the Nintendo DS has 2Cpu, 1ARM7 (the same like GBA) and a ARM9 Cpu.

In GBA Mode the DS can use the ARM7 Cpu to deal with the original ARM7 Code from the GBA Games. In DS Mode he use the ARM9 Cpu and the ARM7 only for IO ans some Soundroutines.

If you want to play older Games like GBC or GB you must write an emulator.

Edit: This is wrong info! Below is the original post.

On the original DS you can play any GB game, all the way back to the first GB.

On the DS lite, you can play GBA games, but nothing from the GB or GB color

No.

Well, that's cleared that up. :/

Nope, I have one here to prove it. DS only works with DS and GBA games.

I just noticed that the GB and GBA carts are different shapes anyway so like Notel says, I doubt my DS Lite can plug in and old GB cart. Shame as I saw some cool games I wouldn't mind trying. Could always but a second hand GBA ...

You've clearly forgotten how bad the old GB display was. :P

With a GBA you can only play the black GameBoyColor Cartridges, not the old grey ones (GameBoyClassic/Pocket). Dont forget this.

GBC = GBC+GB
GBA(SP/Micro) = GBC+GBA
DS = GBA+DS.

I'll remember that next time I'm playing my grey Tetris GB cart on my GBA.

Yes, this is wrong, I used to play old GB games on my GBA all the time. Now I have a DS and use ann emulator to play the old ones.

Yep, sorry. The micro version can not play the old ones..my fault.

You have to mod a DS Phat for it to play legacy games.

Well, this is a fine mess we have gotten ourselves into!

I admit it,... I'm 100% wrong!

Check the compatibility section for the true answer.

Oh yeah, I've no interest in playing black and white GB games, I should have said GBC. Can GBC play on DS? The answer seems to be no. Can GBC play on GBA, the answer seems to be yes, so maybe I'll get a s/h GBA.

I'll check out wiki now. Sometimes I forget that Wiki exists! doh!

GBC on GBA,... yes! I'm sure about that this time,...absolutely,...probably,...yup. :)

I have an original GB game (tetris attack) that I used to play quite a bit, and it works on the GBA. I originally thought it was my DS that I had played it on, which led to my previous (incorrect) post.

Also,... I think someone already mentioned it, but the GBA micro may NOT play those.

Here's the full list, hopefully will clear-up some confusion.
(is it sad that I own every generation/update of each Nintendo handheld?)

Legacy = GameBoy/GameBoy Color

DS Lite : DS, GBA
DS Phat : DS, GBA, moddable to provide legacy support
GB Micro: GBA only
GBA SP : GBA/Legacy
GBA : GBA/Legacy

Coolio. So I can get aGBA and play old GBC games like Rtype and Turrican. Nice.

From the technical side it looks like this:

DS(lite) -> Arm7 + Arm9 = DS + GBA
GBA(SP) -> Arm7 + 8080* = GBA + GBC +GB
GBA micro -> Arm7 (no place to put the Z80/8080* inside) = (only) GBA
GBC -> Intel8080** = GBC + GB
GB(pocket)-> Z80 = GB

* Custom Chip with some technic from the original intel8080 cpu
** Advanced Cpu from Intel based on the Z80

Now, we have all the informations in one thread. ;)
