Are all these 8800GT overheating rumours true?

Is this right? Even with the smaller die, and the single slot factor, that this card actually runs hotter than the old G80 models, because of that flimsy heatsink? I'm glad I ordered a Zalman VF900 along with that eVGA card. Let's hope that nVidia learns their lesson with the upcoming 8800GTS G92 card next month.

Chance that eVGA cards overheat is little. Their cards are opted up to stupidity. But the chance that one of the "cheap" producers might have this kind of problem is there

Well my EVGA GeForce 8800Ultra KO 768MB runs ok.
Just make sure your system can handle it.

My 8800GTX started to overheat when I stuck a Hard Drive in a bay in front of the front intake fan on my PC. It is clearly being cooled by the air being sucked into the front intake. Having said that, hard-drives produce a fair amount of heat - so the heat from the HD could have been blown by the intake straight at the GPU.

I'm now careful not to block the intake airflow to that GPU.

I have a 8800 GTS 768MB and when playing FarCry heat goes up to 81 deg. I installed a watercooling system for the duo core 6600 cpu and the northbridge(not for the graca) and an extra fan sucking the warm air under the 8800 outside, so the mainboard sensore stays at constant 40 deg now (without 53deg) Unfortunately my powersupply is quit noisy, it's a thermaltake toughpower 600w. But although my 8800 gets so hot, it runs very stable. I shouldn't have bought a midi tower though, too little airflow...

Well, seeing as tho that the 8800GT is only a single slot cooler, that could be significant. Had nVidia held on to that dual-slot cooler with the new G92 tech, then we wouldn't have half the trouble we have with this. Not only are they gouging the prices to actually get the card, but they almost force you to buy a Zalman or Thermalright after the fact to keep it around long enough to make it worth it. nVidia's gone too far with this, better hope they learned their lesson come the G92 GTS is released in another month.

You installed a watercooling system for a 6600!? I'm running mine at 3.16 ghz on the stock cooler and it's still running cool. What are you running at, 4ghz or something?

The CPU wasn't the problem, but the northbridge on my Asus p5n-e sli, which is only cooled passively. When doing renderings etc it all worked ok, but once I played farcry heat went up and the nb became very very hot. I added a fan and let the cpu cooler work at 100% but the noise was terrible. That's why I opted for a watercooling system for the cpu and the nb.
But now, although the systems runs very stable, I hear the power supply too loudly. I have an old Medion PC P4 2,46 MHz which I can barely hear.

BTW I played the crysis demo at 1680x1050 (tft) and had to set AA on off and still it wasn't as smooth as I had wished. I will oc the cpu next and see what it helps.
IMO this is insane, I have a rather new and powerful pc and it's the minimum spec for this game. Haven't tried vista though.

Ah, fair enough. My northbridge heats up quite badly too sometimes (Gigabyte 965 DS3-P).
