PS3 outsells the Wii
Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/PS3 outsells the Wii
In Japan that is. But i'm not sure if this is due to the Wii always selling out, or just that Wii sales has actually gone down.

Gosh, that is a 1 week sale and it is in the hot phase of the christmas sales ...
During that phase even "useless" stuff gets sold like nuts :)
Lets wait for the Nov and Dec full months stats actually.
Don't think that this will go on, its just that the "New PS3 has no PS2 support any further" word does not seem to have spread enough.
Well, they do say you can prove anything with statistics...
Hmm. If the PS3 can outsell the Wii - even for one week - when it's yet to have a single must-have game released for it, that doesn't say much for the Wii when the PS3 *does* get some must have games.
when it's yet to have a single must-have game released for it
The same could nearly be said for the Wii, unfortunately. Except its situation is a bit less grim -- a single, instead of none.
I blame EA. They seem to have an endless lineup of games for the Wii, but they all suck. If they stopped being so bad at this, the Wii would easily be ahead.
Or if EA sold their mainstream trash at mainstream trash price at least ... heck Mario Galaxies costs 69 CHF (like 40 Euro), while even EA Playground costs more ...
Quite a joke actually, considered that EA Playground is a bad remake of Wii play (definitely not up against Wii Sports) which costs 5$
Wii has just been on the news: can't get one for love nor money in the UK. Germany have loads in the shops. Go figure.
Apparently Nintendo have decided to fly stock to the UK instead of waiting for the boats to get here. Whether that's just PR or not, who knows...
Wii has 3 must have games. Wii Sports (so it comes with it, but does that make it any less of a must have?), Zelda & now Mario Galaxy. And there are others worth looking up to add to that list. I can't actually think of any one game out now exclusively on PS3 that I'd call must have (but can for 360).
I just received a Wii from Amazon Germany. Cr*p console, fun controller, one good game (Super Mario Galaxy). I'm not surprised that the PS3 has outsold the Wii, and I expect that both the Xbox360 and the PS3 will eventually outsell the Wii globally. I can't help thinking that Nintendo should stop making hardware and develop for other consoles. Non-portable hardware isn't their strong point, and it hasn't been from the N64 onwards.
What? Wiis have been selling by the bucket load.
They've just cocked-up on hardware availability. Not getting this sorted by xmas is a costly mistake. I can image many people/parents wanting to get a Wii over xmas for some family fun, rather than one of the other 'hardcore' consoles.
Hmmm, you still can't get a Wii for love nor money in the U of K. Wii Sports looks like fun.....
For people in the UK: Amazon.de is your friend. They keep cutting off sales to UK residents, but you can get one reasonably easily from them if you keep trying. I ordered mine last Sunday and it arrived yesterday, and I'm in the UK.
Now that the wow novelty of Wii has died down, it's back to how it was on N64 and Gamecube, hardly any games coming out long term, and few really good games few and far inbetween. I mean there are already new nextgen style games coming out on both X-Box360 and PS3 and not on Wii.
Considering PS3 has been really expensive for what seems like years and has had barely any games out for it for what seems like years, and it seems almost everyone jumping on the bandwagon to slag Sony them off and take them down. You'd have to say with unbias that the PS3 is doing well for what little it offers at the moment. If that were the case on Wii and X-Box for example, you'd have to say why would you want one one of those consoles?
I can't help feeling that once Sony gets a bit more of a foothold they'll really dominate again.
I know a few people (including myself) who are just waiting for the price to drop a bit more and a few more games to come out on PS3 but for those who have a Wii, hasn't been turned on in a while.
Everyone likes to have a good swing about with the Wii controller, just like in the days Eyetoy first came out, but then you want to sit down and have a good blast on a game with a normal joypad and regular game. And yet this is not ideal with the Wii. And with Sony supposedly bringing out that Wii style controller on PS2 around Christmas, what good reason is there to have a Wii? With X-Box 360 sales being worse in Japan than the original X-Box, you can't help feeling that once Sony starts getting some hit games going and the price drops to a more sensible level, that the PS3 will overtake everything, especially if it gets a few exclusives.
They proved that with the PSP outselling the DS for a couple of months with some exclusive Final Fantasy titles. Just goes to show that even the mighty 'always out of sale' DS isn't invincible.
I know everyone keeps harping on about not being PS2 compatible but who uses their PS2 for playing PS1 games if they have a PS1 already? I'd rather save my PS2 DVD lense for PS2 games than PS1 games/audio CD/DVD movies etc. Is not being backwards compatible really that bad a deal?
I mean there are already new nextgen style games coming out on both X-Box360 and PS3 and not on Wii.
Well it all depends on what you consider next-gen. Graphics wise they can't compete quite on that level, but they definitely hold their own with games like Mario Galaxy and Metroid Prime.
Enay: Funny is that the PS3 isn't going to get any good game long term as well. Shooter and eye candy trash isn't good, even EA learned that after their serious drop in win last quarter. Show me even a single PS3 game announced that is worth 70-90$ which it costs.
User base too low, console to expensive and the second time in a row a hard to program console with a medium framework to work with (PS2 already was like that which is the reason it took years until teams were able to push the maximum out of it. But this time, sony does not have the semi monopol to survive that ...)
I for one own both current Nintendo Consoles and would consider buying an X360 just for XBox Arcade Live as there are different games going to come that look really cool.
I'm personally not swayed by games with pretty gfx, but many people are. For example the eagerly awaited Resident Evil 5 isn't even coming out for Wii, despite the fact Resident Evil 4 was supposedly to be only ever going to be a Gamecube exclusive like Res Evil 0 and Res Evil 1 remake. I think Capcom learned there, regardless of machine specs, if you're going to make an awesome game an exclusive on 1 console only, choose carefully which console you're gonna do it on you'll really feel it financially.
You'd have thought they'd have learned their lesson on Resident Code Veronica on Dreamcast (Both these games in the end of course ported to at least the PS2)
who uses their PS2 for playing PS1 games if they have a PS1 already?
Me. And being the most important person in the world, my $AU700 counts more than everyone elses.
Funny is that the PS3 isn't going to get any good game long term as well.
Oh of course. The biggest name in console history is not going to see even a 'good' game in the next 5-10 years.
PS2 already was like that which is the reason it took years until teams were able to push the maximum out of it.
Meanwhile, if you want to be less short sighted, PS2 games still kick Wii games arses. Keep in mind the PS3 is not designed to be a short term stop-gap solution, like the Wii is. It will not have a PS4 succeed it in one or two more years. Not only because Ken left and nobody else at Sony knows what consoles are...
Sony always bangs on about their 10 year Console life plan, which makes PS2 about 8 years at least. And Sony are also bringing out a new even smaller PS2 at about 99 pounds.
Also when PS2 came out after about a year they released the smaller PSOne console didn't they.
It does make you wonder why they don't just focus on PS3 only.
Then again, I can remember for the first 2 years of PS2, Tekken Tag Tournament and Ridge Racer 5 only for about 18months.
One of my mates has a PS3 and we often play Super Stardust.
I will get one when Metal Gear Solid 4 comes out.
heh, here in the US I think. MS has been hyping the great sales of the last couple of months.
Here are some of the more interesting tidbits:
For the month of October, Xbox 360 led in total revenue with $354 million compared to $246 million for Wii and $116 million for PS3.
Xbox 360 software revenue at retail surpassed that of Wii and PS3 combined.
For the month of October according to NPD, Xbox 360 software represented 54 percent of total software sales (at $162 million dollars) for this generation, compared to 30 percent for Wii and 16 percent for PS3.
Xbox 360 was home to seven out of the top 10 rated games through the end of October according to Metacritic.
Of all 3rd party U.S. software revenue in October, Xbox 360 generated more than double that of the PS3 and Wii. Xbox 360 weighs in at 57 percent with $130 million, compared to Wii with 28 percent and PS3 at 15 percent.
PS3 and Wii combined had one third party title in the top ten console title list for the month, while Xbox 360 weighed in with 2. Since November, third party partners have seen their titles hit the top ten 29 times for Xbox 360, compared to 2 for PS3 and 2 for Wii.
In last week's earnings announcement from Electronic Arts, Xbox 360 represented 50 percent ($218 million) of their total revenue during the third quarter. In fact, EA titles on Xbox 360 outperformed those same titles on PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2, PSP, Wii and DS combined.

Wii sells the most systems, but falls flat on its face for game sales. Probably due to the lack of games more than anything. Certainly are enough systems out there.
Nintendo does not need the licenses fees from overhyped sells.
As you know they earn cash with each console, they don't pay 100$ - 300$ for each console they sell and need 4+ games sold per costumer do be flat out again ;-)
Yeah, Xbox360 has been making a profit for the past 6 months too, problem being that their new warrany scheme kind of stuck a big hole in things. But they made 200 million out of the Xbox360 last quarter or something.
Sony is taking a considerable loss on each PlayStation 3 sold. Materials and manufacturing costs for the 20Gbyte model exceed the suggested retail price of $499 by a total of $306.85, iSuppli’s Teardown Analysis service estimates. For the 60Gbyte version, costs exceed the $599 price by $241.35.
In contrast, the HDD-equipped Xbox 360 has a manufacturing and materials total of $323.30, based on an updated estimate using costs in the fourth quarter of 2006. This total is $75.70 less than the $399 suggested retail price of the Xbox 360.
that was a year ago.
Aren't MS still millions out of pocket with their whole attempt at the console market?
Yes, maybe even more so with the 33% or so percentage failure rate and free repairs they're having to do.
In Europe the X-Box 360 is selling better than even I'd thought possible, for the moment anyway.
But in Japan, well I needn't say anymore.
Aren't MS still millions out of pocket with their whole attempt at the console market?
Yeah. About $27 billion USD net loss for Microsofts Home & Entertainment Division last time I checked. More than $2 billion USD of that is operating (not R&D or manufacturing) loss.
Yikes!
At least its seling better than the original Xbox lol. It's already beaten total Xbox 1 sales since 2001. And occasionaly it gets games at the top of the Japanese charts.
To be honest, I don't want to see any of the consoles disappear, they all have pretty good market with PS3 and 360 crossing over somewhat. I marginaly prefer 360, but only because it gets the odd traditionaly PC game I really want.
One thing that the PC like original Xbox did was make it easy for PC developers to migrate their engines to, probably why I like many of the 360 exclusives.
Yeah. Imagine how many decent PC game developers you could have funded for that amount of money. Reckon it would have been enough to flood the PC market with inexpensive and enjoyable games, killing off the PlayStation? Yeah. Me too.
To be honest, I don't want to see any of the consoles disappear,
I do. If the companies behind them don't stop insisting on platform exclusives. I want healthy competition! I want your console to succeed because it's the best at what it does, not because you bribed developers for working under less than perfect conditions! I want to see publishers (not developers) punished for a platforms mediocre performance and development tools!
Xbox360 has been making a profit for the past 6 months too
Now thats news to me. I thought they weren't even going to break even until sometimes next year?

Great. So now if they can just get the wholesalers, retailers, distributors and advertisers to do all their work for free, they'll be close to not losing any more money than they already have.
Of course they are losing money, mostly through incompetence. But the system itself is creating a small profit. It's when you take into account the ring of death warranty problems and stupid ammounts spent on useless developers like Rare that don't target the 360's demographic that you have problems. But the hardware itself isn't that expensive.
But the system itself is creating a small profit.
But it isn't. Now I'll admit I don't have an accounting degree, but to me, if the amount of money you receive is less than the amount of money it costs to produce it, that's not a profit. I'm already leaving out all the other "stupid amounts" you refer to. I'm simply talking about the amount of money which Microsoft actually receive on a console. You can't seriously be telling me that you think Microsoft receive the full retail price every time a console is sold?
Indeed. MS aren't making a profit by any stretch of the imagination. Thank god they've deep pockets, eh?
No of course not, I was refering to Dreamoras comment and should have quoted it. The conversation drifted elsewhere after my reply. I was talking about the hardware only the whole time.

Not at all. Sony are still making more money off the PS2 than MS are off of the Xbox360.
