10 types of programmers.
Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/10 types of programmers.
Which one are you?
http://blogs.techrepublic.com.com/10things/?p=262I think I'm a hybrid-blend of "Vince Neil", and "The Theoretician".
I'm gonna go with "The Paratrooper". And "Vince Neil" - but I think all programmers are to some degree.
The Theoretician. Probably why I hate Vista with a passion (bloat).
100% Code Cowboy here. Doubt that will come as a surprise to anyone who's been around here long though.
Something between The Ninja and The Theoretician
Unfortunatly I am currently somewhere in between the last two :(
If there was an 11 and it was called "Coding Brain Power of a Dead Goat" then I would be under that one.
:)
I only fit into the Theoretician category.
Hmmmm... I would say that I fit kind of half way between Ninja and Paratrooper.
Can almost make a Team Fortress2 mod out of those 'classes'.
Cowboy. total "lone ranger" :)
Vince Neil Paratrooper here. :)
Mediocre Man.
As long as it works, it works.
#10: The Evangelist
But really I'm a cross of that and #6: The Theoretician
So it doesn't make any sense.
Something between The Ninja and The Theoretician
Yup me too LOL
10 types of programmers - the ones that do and the ones that don't.
I guess I'm kind of a mix of The Ninja, The Evangelist and Mediocre Man. More Mediocre Man than anything else though.
#7: The Code Cowboy
The Code Cowboy is a force of nature that cannot be stopped. He or she is almost always a great programmer and can do work two or three times faster than anyone else. The problem is, at least half of that speed comes by cutting corners. The Code Cowboy feels that checking code into source control takes too long, storing configuration data outside of the code itself takes too long, communicating with anyone else takes too long… you get the idea.
Thats me!

I see what you did there.
Those that understand binary, and those that don't?
The Theoretician is also easily distracted. A simple task that should take an hour takes Theoreticians three months, since they decide that the existing tools are not sufficient and they must build new tools to build new libraries to build a whole new system that meets their high standards. The Theoretician can be turned into one of your best players, if you can get him or her to play within the boundaries of the project itself and stop spending time working on The Ultimate Sorting Algorithm.
This is exactly my problem ATM. Taking forever programming a portion of a toolset for my game development, and getting depressed because I can't be satisfied with performance enough and not sure if I'll stick to Blitz3D or move to BlitzMax, which would require porting the code and using a new 3D engine. :o

I could tell you why you're
really not getting work done, but you wouldn't like it.
Hehe, pretty funny. I'm a cross between the fanboy, the martyr, and the ninja/cowboy. Sometimes I'm quiet and surprise people like the ninja ... then I get excited and start getting more boisterous like the cowboy.

Spending too much time in the Blitz forums? ;)
I would probably need to take a percentage of most of those descriptions to describe me - and the percentages of each would probably change at various times, for various reasons.
Gah, I don't really care what 'type' of programmer I am - I only code for myself, anyway.
I guess I'm most like Vince Neil, except for the hangovers and musical taste.
I started my career as the Martyr. Then became the Code Cowboy when i learnt how things were played around here....then slowly became a Ninja...and the dullness of this job has made me Medicore Man that I am today.
10 types of programmers.
There are only 10 types of programmers -- those who know binary, and those who don't.
Yeh! Dodgy jokes are even funnier the second time! ;]
I changed my mind, I've always been Mediocre Man.
