http://www.gamerankings.com/htmlpages2/915692.aspIt must be a holy grail, because GameSpot actually gave it, a Wii title, a 9.5/10.....
Yeah, Gamespot usually rips Wii titles in half :(
I played a little bit of it today at a kiosk. I had fun.
It's a bit weird the way the camera works... Half the time when you're on those little planets, you're looking at Mario upside down. The control is consistent though. You never feel like you're not in control of where he's going even if it is a bit mindbending the way it works.
Also, the way the planets work is that you fly from one planet to the next by firing mario out of these star cannons. But initially at least, you can't seem to control where he flies. He just flies in a straight line from one to the next.
I suspect that later in the game you gain the ability to control mario's flight between the planets so you can choose which ones to land on, but it's possible you never do, and the cannons simply act as warp pipes.
I hope they do let you control your flight though, I was looking forward to that.
Anyway, I had quite a bit of fun even in the tutorial sections, unlike Mario Sunshine.
Yep, it's pretty good alright. I'm 43 stars in and it's the best Wii game released yet by far, until Brawl comes that is.
How are you playing it when it hasn't been released? :-)
I am not at liberty to divulge that information ;)
Heh, well it hasn't been officially released for sale, but its out there......
It must be a holy grail, because GameSpot actually gave it, a Wii title, a 9.5/10.....
LOL...too funny. I read in another forum that they should rename GameSpot.com to "Xbox360Spot.com" instead lol..
Didn't want to start a new topic, so I thought I'd throw this in here.
Just got it tonight, and have played through the first 8 stars so far.
-AWESOME!
-AWESOME!

yea,... I like it. Definately the best Wii title out there, and worth buying the system for if you don't have one already.
So far in just the little bit I've played it feels like a bit of that magic that has been lacking in games lately is back. I really loved Super Mario 64, but could never get into Mario Sunshine when I picked it up for the Wii (never had a Gamecube) Galaxy so far reminds me of playing Mario 64 when I first got it. Everything was a bit of a new experience, and my wife is trying to get the controller so she can have a turn.
Gotta go play more!
Wiis are like gold dust here in the UK. Luckily I bought one from the German Amazon site, so, hopefully, I'll be able to play Galaxy (and Twilight Princess) in a couple of days. I only ever buy Nintendo consoles for their Mario and Zelda games - especially this time around, since the Wii is the biggest overhyped gimmick console I've ever seen.
I might end up flogging it for an outrageous price on Ebay to desperate parents looking for a Christmas present.
I bought it, and I'm enjoying it.
I was afraid running around on the little planets was going to get old real quick, but new game mechanics keep getting introduced which keep things interesting.
I'm not convinced I'll actually finish it though. I never finished Zelda. :-)
Hah - I hardly ever finish games. Usually I make it to the 20-30 hours of gameplay point and give up. The only game that I've finished recent is Gears of War. Before that, the last game I completed was Knights of the Old Republic, and before that, Quest for Glory 4 many years ago. Maybe Super Mario Galaxy will be the next game on my "completed games" list. It depends on how samey it gets. I became bored with Mario Sunshine very quickly.
Yah I got it yesterday and although i got a chance to play it for an hours, I must say that its quite fun. Definitely reminds of Mario 64 from back in the day. Havent had too much time to get deep into it but i will later on.
BTW, check out what Variety.com had to say about it :
http://www.variety.com/review/VE1117935396.html?categoryid=1023&cs=1
Interesting review, thanks for the link.
I'm not sure if I agree with Variety about the quality of the graphics (but all I have to go on are screenshots and gameplay videos as yet) because the game seems to have bags of charm and character. The reviewer compares the visuals negatively with the latest Ratchet and Clank game, which I find interesting because the Ratchet and Clank series is a superb example of soulless, charmless cartoon design. Their argument seems to be that high polygon counts and shaders equals "great graphics" whilst superb art design and characterisations do not - as if technical flair is of greater value than aesthetics. I'd argue that it's actually the other way round. But I guess I'll find out for myself when I get the chance to play the game.
Variety also slagged off on
Metroid Prime 3 stating issues about the game as compared to a traditional FPS like Halo 3 or something. Apparently they don't seem to understand the concept of the "Metroid" genre, which is why they reviewed it the way the did.
As far as graphics for Mario Galaxy, I would say its among the top on Wii games so far, but definitly not pushing it's capabilities. But to compare it the way they did with Ratchet and Clank's graphics and say that it fails in comparison just doesnt quite make sense. They didn't mention art direction or styling, but almost blantantly states that it has worst graphics than a PS3 game....did they forget that this is a Wii? And since when was Mario games suppose to be a heavy graphic pusher?
games like gears of war, ratchet and clank, unreal 3 etc are just that, technically great but these japanese games like mario galaxy, okami, windwaker etc are beautiful and not boring, a work of art infact.
Oh, absolutely. And of course it's due to the influence of Japan's well established manga and anime industries. Wind Waker is in my opinion one of the most beautiful games ever made, period. It's all about style not technical grunt (although it's nice to have both), but unfortunately western audiences generally don't get that.
don't like wind maker, prefer phantom hour glass, its less boring (I actually never finished WM, which is strange as this is more or less the only zelda release since a link to the past, that I haven't finished)
0.1% away of being the highest rated video game of all time*.

Am I the only one a little disappointed by it? Maybe the years of playing mario games is getting to me..
I'm just getting REALLY tired of collecting stars all the time. The puzzles aren't challenging and neither are the bosses. Using the pointer to collect stuff is no fun, and co-op is a joke. I find collecting stars is more of a chore than a game, since everything is so easy. I've got around 25 stars and I can't be bothered to keep going.
... Then again, I liked Mario Sunshine.
Yeah I agree the puzzles are pretty weak, but oddly enough I found the game to be quite fun and sort of enteraining to look at. After for using the pointer, would you rather run up and manually pick up each star bits?
