All my life I have been bombarded by the number 27. I know this is a strange post... but has anyone else? If not, what number haunts you?

Well I live at number 27 ...

The odd thing is the close I live on goes like this (number wise)

1,3,5,7,9,11, 27,29...

So all the houses from 12-26 disappeared sometime during the development, very odd.

I have had the same first 2 numbers for all three combination locks I have needed to use.

Basically I've list at house number 72 TWICE, and I've only moved a few times. I've also lived at house number 3 TWICE but that's much more likely. Also I always get a slip of paper with no. 69 (or 72) when I order Chinese takeaway.

Possibly. I don't fully recall - but the marshmallow thing seems a good suspect for this.

1 divided by 7. Take the first 6 decimal places and multiply that number by 2, by 3, etc up to times 6. Compare the results.

It's all subjective. People tend to notice patterns, and once you somehow fix on a specific number you'll see it everywhere. Think of any random number: 11.
If you start paying attention, it will suddenly pop up 'everywhere'. Especially numbers that do have some kind of significance to you (birthdate, special event, etc.) they tend to stand out more than others.

Doesn't mean it follows you around, it just means that you're better at ignoring the other ones. :-)

The number 27 has a very distinct look to me. I read somewhere that Daniel Tammet (famous savant) sees numbers as shapes/images. I kind of understand where he's coming from.

I have been seeing numbers (mostly time) like 11:11, 12:12, 15:15, 16:16 etc ... my aunt too has reported seeing this phenomena. Just as I was typing this I looked at the time and it's 23:23 ... weird.

Good grief. When I was younger I used to be paranoid that I was seeing 666 everywhere - joined my local club and got membership No. 666 etc.

I probably just watched too many horror films or something and conditioned my brain to highlight that number whenever I saw it. I'm sure the number 123, or whatever, cropped up just as often, just I wasn't 'looking out' for it.

When <insert your number here> crops up, it can seem 'spooky', but given the huge amount of different numbers we encounter on a daily basis, if that number didn't crop up on a fairly regular basis, that would be spooky!

Here's what's haunting ME: do a search for any number (especially three digits or less) and you'd probably get the same scale of results. Seriously, it's like big10p said: it's all in wether you're LOOKING for it or not. For instance, my family got a Buick Roadmaster with wood finish this year. Now, suddenly, the roads seem to be plagued by Roadmasters with wood finish. Did we spark off some massive global Roadmaster craze? Of course not. I just never noticed them before.

Same goes for my MotoRazr phone. And I thought it was so unique. *sigh* T_T

However, think about this: Due to random chance it is ENTIRELY POSSIBLE that one person COULD encounter the same number over and over again in their lives more than other numbers even though most people don't experience that.

I can't help but notice numbers like 2,4,8,16,32,64,128,256,512,1024,2048,4096,8192 etc after spending so much time at my PC these days.

Well no actually. For starters the number 7 is much more prevalent than other numbers, because it is the amount of items the average human can keep in their short term memory.

Other than that, if a person was subjected to random numbers, the same number would not show up more regularly, as it would likely be a normal distribution, with numbers with few digits near the top of the bell curve, and really large, and really small numbers near the edges.

Again the psychological reason for this is due to the way humans perceive numbers. Really large numbers, like say Gabes 19,452,607 is going to be memorized by most people as 19 million and something (so ultimately simply 19), because we're incapable of reasoning with such large numbers.

Since it's at the far end of the bell curve, it's not likely -- but like Grey said: "ENTIRELY POSSIBLE".

To be honest I thought that random chance pretty much guaranteed the opposite.

It's not the same. Since there are infinitely more numbers in real life than there are on a dice, it is infinitely more likely that your scenario occurs than Greys scenario occurs. The probability of someone subjected to a stream of genuinely random numbers in an infinite range, is going to come across a statistically significant variance in distribution, never mind being able to notice it.

There's like 6.6 Billion people on earth, I bet you some of them have had a significant number in their lives crop up more times than other numbers based on random chance as I've said. It's pretty obvious and simple maths.

I do agree that most people THINK that a significant number keeps coming back to them but they are just focused on that number and excluding others. However, I think that it's still possible to keep encountering the same number via random chance of course.

Being that my g/f and my bdays both fall on the 27th, I guess you could say that.

I've had more chance encounters with the #23 though.

i was un aware that the jim carey movie was a remake ... from your quote it bares little to the german 'original' save for having 23 in the title (even imdb makes it seem even more distant), it could have been called anything ... even catch-22 was going to be called catch-someothernumber (18 i think) but their was another book with 18 in it and publisher/authour decided a name change ... or else wed be saying its a catch18 situation
