ratio of Blitz 3D to BlitzMax coders?

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/ratio of Blitz 3D to BlitzMax coders?

I wonder what the ratio of Blitz 3D to Blitz Max coders there are out there. I'm thinking of making some simple Blitz 3d mods and I'm wondering if there is still a market out there for that stuff.

Max:+1

BlitzMax here too. I have B3D, but I rarely use it now.

I would assume a lot of BlitzMax users also own either BlitzPlus or Blitz3D, so perhaps 5:2 or close. If you wanted active users of either languages, then no idea.

I have both - but I only use Blitz3D.

I purely use Blitz3D too.

The market probably depends on the nature of your mods. If it's something people can throw into a near-complete game without much fuss, I'm sure the market is excellent. If it's something which will primarily appeal to people about to begin a new project, I'd guess your market is likely to be very limited.

I still use Blitz3D, probably more than BlitzMax. But unless you are gonna offer something that a) hasn't been done before, and b) I can't do myself (at all or without a great deal of work) then it might not be worthwhile. I'm sure there are still plenty of Blitz3D users tho.

BlitzMAX exclusively. Haven't used Blitz3D since I bought a TabletPC and found out Blitz3D didn't work on it.

I have both, but has only used BlitzMax since it got released.

there are still some left-behinds like me who are using blitz3d only. but lets ask this forum's database...

Blitz3D here

Blitz3D here as well.

Max.

Blitz3d here

Blitz3D here. The language is great, simple to use and the entity system rocks. Never had compatibility problems. I'm not saying Max does - but if something is stable and does everything you want it to, why change?

Yeh, bring it on Blitz3D users.

We totally own.

BlitzMax here. I gave my Blitz3D away.

Max and 3D here... mostly been using Max of late in order to pick up OOP, but I'm finding myself borked for doing a lot of interesting visual stuff without good old image buffers.

Max

Blitz3d & Blitzplus - there's nothing blitzmax does that I see a need for in my own programs yet.

Max here. I own B3D but I haven't used in the past 3 or 4 years. Max all the time, and not only for games.

blitz3D mainly

Max

Hmmm... What's Blitz3D ?

Max and MiniB3D. I don't want to get all wubby on you but it's a beautiful combo. :D

i dont like bmax because the compile takes about 5 secounds for an almost empty document.

Blitz 3D!

I use blitz3d

Right.

Blitz3D it is then.

"Craig H. Nisbet" - let's have some info on these mods.

We could spend months voting on this - for you to announce your mods that nobody wants.

I started in B3D and so I'll have to finish in it rather than start again..haven't bought Max yet.

Blitz3D - but rarely.

B3D only. BMax never!!! cause of missing 3D-engine! No, i don't like 3rd party wrapped 3D-engines.

B3D

Moving slowly to BMax with irrlicht libs.

I would start more projects in B3d if only it didnt require Crapdows/DX to run.

Only Max here.

was blitz3d for a long time but am now trying my hand at blitzmax+tv3d, which makes blitz3d seem very limited.

I say why moan about max3d etc get stuck in with whats out now, tv3d is a great dx9 engine with tons of great features and is very easy to use once you get to grasps with it.

Blitz3D, for simplicity. Already with Blitz3D you can take 6 or 7 years to accomplish a 3D game, so I can imagine BlitzMax

Interesting response. I too have had issues making a 3d transition from Blitz3d to Max.

For the libs I was considering making. I just wanted to make so simple libs, both code and assets, that do typical game stuff that seems to get left out of the libs department and sell them for super cheap, like $5 to $10. I don't really want to give away my ideas on that just yet.

The bigger idea I had was to make some model libraries for sale. I figured I would make some fantacy or sci-fi models.
I think a "pod people" RPG model library would be really useful for people making RPGs. In CG movies, we refer to the generic backgound charactors as Pod People. Right now I alway see models that are all in ones. That's not very useful if your trying to make a more original game. I was thinking of making a man and a woman model, rigged with animation, and then make accessory packs that work on those models so you could make all kinds of different looking charactors with them. You could go any direction with the accesories. I was thinking things like different armor, heads, hair, clothes, etc. Doesn't have to be just for fantacy games either. There's a lot that could be done with this and I think it would be really useful.

blitz3D and BMax here. Achieved a full release with BMax, took me about 18 months.... however have been mainly coding in B3D of late in conjunction with the JV-ODE physics engine for kicks.

I enjoy seeing the fantastic visuals the you can accomplish in B3D with so little effort, although I can't be sure I'd ever be able to create a full release in B3D as a one man band....

Max here, own Blitz3d and plus but havent used them in ages.

Let me finish that sentence for you: would take about half the time, because it has a higher level of abstraction, and better data structures, and control over how they're used.

Max here, i own blitz3d and blitzplus. never really used blitzplus but still use blitz3d sometimes.

B3d
B+
Max/gui <-

B3d, can't find the key/install files anymore, can't be bothered about that either.
B+, I happily used B+ over the years
Max/gui, this is the real "anno today" shizzle, for me it totally replaces B+ :P

That may be so but cutting the development time in half is something I'll agree to disagree on. I still code in Blitz3d as a hobby and motivation is a much bigger factor in terms of development time than language capabilities.

I will move to Max at some stage when I have the time to mess around with it. Clearly is has the benefits of oop, cross compatibility & speed to name but a few ...... but from what I can see most seem to be using it to create 2d puzzle games and little else. I'll stick to good old B3d for now :)

Stevie

I am very slow picking up anything to do with programming, so ive only just got my head round blitz3d, max looks like id need to learn to much more at the moment, just to get something i can do in blitz3d alot easyer. the only bonus would be the cross platform thing.

BlitzMax, for those reasons:

1. It runs on OS X.
2. It is a nice, yet simple no-nonsense OO language.
3. Not only does it run on OS X, it even creates native Cocoa-applications.

I don't care for a 3D engine. I don't even really care for BlitMax' feature set for writing games. I'd rather like to see Brucey working full time for Blitz Research and providing the community with even more useful modules for application development. ;-)

BlitzMax.

I loved B3D back in the day, but there's no way I could've completed my last game with it. It's just a lot easier to manage complexity with Max.

I too use max for its cross platform compatibility, I now have Linux and Win32 versions of Elite Multiplayer :) (would have Mac OSX version but I dont have OS X Tiger 10.4 for my G3)

well ive got b3d but i have no time to start back at square one and get back into coding at the moment

I think people are forgetting the Blitz3D SDK - you can use BlitzMax/C++ with the Blitz3D Engine and write 3D programs. But some would say BRL have forgotten it too.

I agree, Blitz3D intrigues me with it's capability. I code in Blitz3D as a hobby, who knows I may release some freeware / shareware products in the future with B3D + physics engine. It's the share scale of the possibilities that floats my boat (;-).

Craig, are you looking to sell to the market?

Are you aiming to get gratification from people using your creations for nowt?

B3D for some time, I can't remember back in 04? I've held out on Bmax until it fully and properly integrates B3D + B+ + Bmax to form one ubber Blitz. I've been away for a while but was kinda disappointed to see that Bmax hadn't assimilated everything else yet. :P
