Truevision3D Section?

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Truevision3D Section?

Gabriel has produced a BlitzMax Wrapper for the powerful Truevision3D Engine which some people here are using - so why not introduce a Section for it?

Should just get a whole forum category dedicated for wrappers/engines.

I think you can go to Truevision 3D's forum to talk about Truevision 3D and coding for it.

as you could go to the Blitz3D forum to talk about miniB3D, yet it still got its own section ...

A general 3D Section for BlitzMax would suffice I think and asking users for using their brains by just putting the engine into the name like [MiniB3D] [TrueVision] ...

That's really not the same thing, considering MiniB3D is no longer just a clone of Blitz3D...

I think it's a good idea having something like a wrapper/engine section.

Yes, a wrapper/3D Engines for blitzMax section would be nice. :)

They should make me the moderator of it also as I have been well behaved. O.o

I'd like a section for each of my modules too please :-)

According to Noel, no one is supposed to post anything. So everyone please stop posting until you send the post to Noel first so he can review it.

I see nothing wrong with this idea either, since it seems that wrappers are the lifeblood of innovation with BMax.

I must admit that in some ways, it would be good to have a section on this forum, if only because it means that people don't have to sign up to a new forum to discuss a subject which really is already covered by two existing forums.

Noel is quite correct that the wrapper changes almost nothing about the underlying API. The only major difference I can think of is that I added a CTVWindow class which wraps up all the window creation and maintenance crap ( windows messaging, etc ) which you normally have to do in C++, C# or whatever. And that's just three or four calls in an entire program, because it's packaged away so that you don't see much of it.

So yeah, 95% of the time, you can absolutely post on the TV3D forums and people there will know what you're talking about. The syntactic differences between VB, C# and BlitzMax are pretty minimal when 99% of the code you're using is just TV API calls anyway.

I've taken the day off work to try and sort out the tutorials and a forum anyway, so there will be somewhere else to post soon. The GG forum is horribly broken and I can't find any way to fix it, so I'm either going to have to delete and reinstall that, or I'm going to have to find somewhere which hosts forums. Perhaps a Google Group or something, because then I can carry across any important threads. I'm doing the tutorials first, I'll post back when I've sorted out a forum.

A generic wrapper section would be fine, but a dedicated Lights of Dreams section would be even better.

I agree with Noel.

I agree with Steve and Brucey.

Besides which, I don't think intentionally driving advanced users to other forums is a net benefit to the Community.

I think a generic blitzmax wrapper section or maybe one for the 3d engines wrapped because there is more than just truevision3d out there ie ogre, irrlicht etc which are or have been wrapped.

I think its a good idea to have a general Bmax 3dengine/wrapper section.

Actually, FlameDuck raises a good point, I don't want to be drawing people away from this site if I can help it. It's a shame that this site doesn't support foums within forums. Then a single "Third Party Modules" forum could contain forums for TV3D, Ogre, 57 of Brucey's modules, etc, but the main page could still be kept clean with only one additional forum.

I'll set a forum up today, but I'll give it a couple of days before I make the URL public, to see if BRL have any opinion on the subject.

If they don't, perhaps it would make sense for those of us who have or are developing modules to get together and arrange a single forum with sections for each module, so that people aren't being scattered in different directions.

A section for other modules, such as wrappers, would be a good idea. The original idea of a section just for Truevision however is completely pointless. You could come here and ask a question and hope one of the folks using Truevision is going to reply, or you can go to the Truevision forums and ask and likely even get an answer from Sylvain or darq. So tell me, who do you want to answer your question: a few people, or a community dedicated to the use of Truevision, including its developers?

Also, Chroma, why are you stalking me? Have I done something to you? You're apparently the only person around jumping on me right now.
