Yes, that sure is the ultimate gaming rig. I would love to see it in action. The only downside is that you will need earplugs when you sit next to it because of all the noise that it produces; that machine probably sounds like a jet engine with ignited afterburners. Nothing you want to have in your living room. Oh, and you should make sure that you have enough money for the next electricity bill. Well, fun does not come for free, does it? :)

I don't even think the 16 amp fuses we have around here would be able to survive the strain of powering that sucker.

They must've replaced the fuses with nails.

Headphones are better for gaming anyway... :) It would also heat your room nicely which would be good right now [-3C, and first snow here].

Looks expensive. I wouldn't want to get angry with a game and throw that machine out of the window. :-)

Yeah.. great... all we need now is at least one game that can really take advantage of all that power. But I got the feeling we are in for some waiting.

How long before it becomes the 'minimum requirements' for Doom 10? The point about power consumption is a good one, where I live we have had for the last few years power restrictions ie not using air conditioners in summer - the amount of energy something like that, if it was in every home (eventually) would consume would probably be horrendous. Surely either our energy resources would have to change or maybe PC technology will go in a completely different direction down the path of minimum power usage what with climate change and all that.

I doubt you'd spend that much on a rig just to play Crysis at 3840x2160, I take it their main purpose are for render farms?

This was the development machine for 3DMark Vantage. Clearly.

The only current practical application I can see for a rig like that is if you work for Pixar or Dreamworks. Seriously, there is currently no such thing as a game that's made to take advantage of THAT kind of power.
Also, I agree with Matty: in the future, PCs probably will (and certainly SHOULD) change direction into energy conservation. Either that, or self-contained mini nuclear power sources will replace Li-Ion batteries. ^_^

Adam: PCs target power consumption. Its graphic card manufacturers and eye candy sluts that just break it.
Intels upcomming CPUs have an idle power on dual and quad core thats lower than intel P-Ms back then ... with < 4W ... which is nowhere near ground breaking ...
Intel at least is approaching their 2008 energy target (and notebook runtime target of 8h)

I hope micorsoft doesn't have wind of this system, it'll no doubt struggle to run their next OS. Oh okay, ever the cynic. I Still like VB6. toms page is one slow page.... maybe he shouldve done it in xhtml....

thought, who would upgrade ATIs ... the driver become worse and their GPUs make second anyway ... Can't be nvidia at all as nvidia does not let any 3rd party create sli boards anymore from what it seems

Apparantly, (when fully kitted) it is expensive to run in terms of the electric usage - I mean it is a lot more expensive than your standard PC.

Well what do you think for what purpose 1500W and 2000W PSUs are done ... not that I would never put such a thing in my system ... have a 500W which runs at 300W-330W in load ... thats acceptable ... same as my X360

jeez louise, a 2kw power supply, who needs an electric bar fire with one of those guzzling your leccky. And if your lucky enuf to be in the U of K leccky just went up 15 percent....

What i would do is is put it in my neighbours kitchen, drill a small hole in the wall good for an extended LCD cable with wireless mouse and keyboard and a network drive that connects with my noise-free WLAN laptop. ^^

I have a 1KW power supply in my system, not that it ever uses anywhere near that amount of power, I just wanted something that can supply 30 amps via the 12V line (for SLi).

By the time that sort of thing is standard graphics cards will be a thing of the past and everything will be realtime raytracing. I don't know why everything is still being pushed down the triangle route now anyway. Anyway... This is probably a topic for another thread!

What's the point? Gamers expect everything to run perfectly on their GE Force 6800s. No software is going to be written that will come close to using that amount of power.

If they could manufacture and sell an 8800 for $100 that would be much more exciting.
