FPS Creator goes DX10
Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/FPS Creator goes DX10

FPS Creator X10 only works on Windows Vista with the NVIDIA GeForce 8 series of DirectX10 video cards.
Glorified Doom 1 & 2 DIY.
It is actually pretty impressive, especially from the graphical side - I'm not sure about the baddies AI, they seem thicker than a thick pot of cream.
However, there are multiplayer capabilities, which should be interesting.
I think fps creator is aimed for the independent games market and making dx10 games for the indie market means zero profit for me. Compability is the key aspect in this market so it sucks in my opinion...
As Lee has said : DX10 is the future - there is no getting away from it.
Like DarkPhysics, DGDK and co, they get your money and drop support and pretending they're busy maintaining it.
FPS Creator is just another 3D Game Maker, and this one(X10) is another way they get money from those like fasion but unlikely working things.
Sorry for negative critism but don't want to touch any TGC garbages more.
(mainly for their poor quality/support and bloated package)
Oh please, the GSDK and co are still being updated - and yes, it did come from Lee & Co.
Well they have been around a while apparently people are using it. But much of the games people have made using it sucks big time though...
Hmm looked kind of amateurish to me when the awful speaker said that you can use a huge amount of enemies and there were just a few pals standing around.
These days with shaders, graphics on almost any game are the same, its just how well the engine is optimised that makes a difference. And then you have the problem of not being able to get enough people onboard to make high quality artwork for games on a really tight budget.
It's cool that DX10 is avaliable to indies if you really want it though, nice for portfolio work and stuff if you really want to show what you can do with the latest tech.
Limited in everything for my tastes (DX10, only FPS...) I cant' see a future for developers...
I've seen some nice looking levels done with FPScreator and some fairly decent scripting, cutscenes and player reload animations etc,,,but every game made with it that I've ever played is filled with statues holding guns. Too bad. it's the old graphics can't cure lack of gameplay.
the main problem of game creators is that the games look like one of a million...
They really need to show off some interesting stuff done via scripting -- otherwise it's hard to take it as anything other than a fairly facile click-together program that is only going to let you create the most generic shooters.
for the most part of the video it looked like it was just boxes like wolfenstien wall/floor no 2nd floor (till i saw a staircase later on)
kinda makes me think that unless you have some decent modeling skills yourself your stuck with the same character packs everyone else is and it makes me think
"what if atari sold gauntlet or namco pacman level / sprite editors"
mind you this is biased from "trying" 3dgamemaker off a guy i know who got it for his kids, probably the demographic it should have been aimed at not the teenage and above.
I think fps creator is aimed for the independent games market
Really? Huh. That's an interesting perspective. Personally I can't even imagine a market for this.
As Lee has said : DX10 is the future - there is no getting away from it.
Well that just goes to show how big a muppet he really is. DX10 is the present, and you'll get away from it as soon as you upgrade to DX10.1. If I had a penny for every time someone had predicted the future and been dead wrong, I'd be livin' la vida loco on Richard Bransons island. Remember who also said that "DX9 was no problem for Windows 98". Remember who was wrong? Again?
nice for portfolio work and stuff if you really want to show what you can do with the latest tech.
Too bad it won't be the latest tech anymore 12 months from now when you're finished creating all that high quality content by yourself.

Ok, so maybe we should just quit, something better is always just around the corner, why bother?
FPS Creator X10 only works on Windows Vista with the NVIDIA GeForce 8 series of DirectX10 video cards.
This'll need to be fixed asap if they plan to have the product live long. I mean, no ATI support whatsoever? About as good as shooting yourself in the foot.
Two words.
Gimmick.
Crap.

Sure if that's the way you feel about it. If the main reason you want to make games, is playing with bleeding edge technology, then you're in the wrong business. You should be in the Engine game instead.
and you'll get away from it as soon as you upgrade to DX10.1
No you wont - unless you get a Linux or even better, a Mac. Remember that 10.1 is just a superset of 10, and wont require any new DX10 hardware, contary to original speculation.
FPSC Creater is designed for those people who cant program.
I mean, no ATI support whatsoever?
It'll probably work - but ATI DirectX 10 drivers are awful, apparently.
Too bad it won't be the latest tech anymore 12 months from now when you're finished creating all that high quality content by yourself.
The idea is downloadable packs.
awful speaker
I'm sure the voice over artist will be pleased to know what you think about him!
huge amount of enemies and there were just a few pals standing around.
Dont worry - you can. Where possible it'll use DX10 instancing.
I'm not worrying as i'm in no way interested in this but i found it a bad demonstration as the statements weren't backuped by the visuals.
Thats because you weren't at the convention. Besides, it wont be out for a while yet.
I wasn't talking about some convention, i was talking about their advertisement video. Beside of this i doubt that there does exists a reasonable market for fps indy games and so for the engine. I would prefer playing HalfLife2 or Crysis and i don't think that i would play or even pay for such a game. Mostly they come down to horrible art, bad level design and a lack of ideas.
Don't forget DBS(now TGC) is very skilled at selling craps to customers.
I think it looks alright. Clearly they are not aiming at "indie"'s. Its more of a thing older kids and younger teenagers are gonna find some fun in. I remember when i was 12 (i think) and found a pc program called "klik and play" (the fps/3d game maker of its time) on the shelf. The program had a no programming approach, a library of drop in characters, the ability to customize features with clicks rather than arrays, ints and floats. It is the program that got me interested in game programming.
You can't deny that if you had little to no programming knowledge that you could find some fun in creating your very own shooter game with physics, lighting, your own maps, etc.
That being said, i think they could open up this idea more if they moved away from the limited genre approach. Klik and play has since moved onto other products called the games factory and multi media fusion. Both of which are extremly powerfull products that require absolutly no text based programming to create brilliant results. I would never go back to using these programs but they do serve a purpose like a gateway into game creation. Hence "the game creators".
Just to let you know that Visual Studio 2008 now comes with GSDK...
Click and Play was great ... and if you look at MultiMedia Factory, you see how far this thing actually evolved :)
And many professional users would definitely kick your butt for comparing it to a "lamer genre creator tool" like FPSC :)
What is a GSDK MrTAToad?
I so far didn't install the Orca beta as it seems to be more Vista targeted than XP but I might see this wrong.
The GSDK is TGC's C/C++/.Net development system (that comes with VS 2008) - its essentially DBPro but for C...
The voice over guy sounds like the same one they used in Westworld - good film for it's time.
You can buy voice over artists for pretty reasonable prices (non-union people are cheaper) at
http://voice123.com/ - its where TGC got their voice-over person from.
nah get someone pissed as a fart on tramps wine and give them a very large print script to read from
aslong as they dont vomit over the microphone
Bit limited compatibility though
"FPS Creator X10 only works on Windows Vista with the NVIDIA GeForce 8 series of DirectX10 video cards."
I would say that it is totally useless but as a toy... and as a toy only if you have a GeForce series 8 with Vista! (which, combined, give one of the smallest userbases a PC developer has ever seen)
I expected at least backward compatibility with DX9.0c (as any DirectX game so far), and anyway even for a DX10 standpoint limiting the brand to nVidia is quite ridiculous.
GSDK is essentially not DBP for C ... otherwise it would at least support the DBO format (as its X support is as lacking as Blitz3Ds X support but Blitz3D at least has the excuse that this is due to DX7 X specs :) )
But this is indeed a nice move ... so they try to compete with Garage Games who got their TorqueX into the Xbox 360 "home dev" program and seem to plan to make it the XNA "standard" engine ^^
That a DX10 one needs Vista is clear ...
The NVIDIA part is most likely due to missing shader capabilities on the ATI end ... once again (didn't they learn their lesson from the past where they refused to include vertex texture fetch on X series even thought NVIDIA had it with GF6 which is the reason they don't have relief mapping on their cards in games?!)
AMD is great at marketing "following some standards" but NVIDIA funnily always is much better at actually deliverying hardware that can be used at that standard, not only for pure markettng purpose ^^
Save your money. Check this link for a better tool for the job.

Dog
At least they are supporting the almost latest version of Direct X not one that is 'out of date' even by M$ standards.
The NVIDIA part is most likely due to missing shader capabilities on the ATI end
The ATI X2900 is a perfectly compliant DX10 card, and supported by all DX10 games too. Actually ATI only covers mid-end solutions, but compared by price and performance to nVidia very good ones nonetheless.
You can't narrow compatibility to a single brand (Konami once did with Metal Gear Solid 2 Substance, and the reaction was so harsh they had to add ATI support with a patch in a few weeks), and for an engine having to shave everything but Nvidia Series 8 and DX10 is plain silly, since a broad userbase is always the most important important aspect for a shareware/commercial developer. It's a lot easier to treat the pc as a console (limiting your hardware choices you don't have to look at scalability and compatibility) but the PC community is too mixed hardware wise... I could understand about going DX10 only (and I already argue on that, at least in 2007) but limiting the choice to nVidia only shows lack of committment on the developer's side.
GSDK is essentially not DBP for C ... otherwise it would at least support the DBO format
It does - you can load and save DBO objects using dbLoadObject and dbSaveObject. Hence GSDK
is DBPro for C.
There are very few DX10 cards that run at a reasonable speed for games - the lower end ones are useless, and top-end ones aren't coming through.
