Please test this Vista code on Win98SE (Big10p?)

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Please test this Vista code on Win98SE (Big10p?)

Hi, this little app makes a folder in a special location and then attempts to share it with all users, then it writes a test file into the folder. This works on Vista and XP and I'd like to test it on Win98 but can't find a test machine.

Can any of you test it please and tell me what the console output says (or take a screenshot by pressing alt+print screen then pasting that into a paint package and uploading it). Thanks!

It works on Me btw, in that it creates the folder but won't give it full access (because the function probably doesn't exist) and then writes the text file in the folder.

Why not install a virtual machine, its really easy if you have a 98 disk kicking about.

Just create the VM here: www.easyvmx.com

Then download the player from the useful links section.

Open the VM in the player with the CD in the drive and bobs yer uncle... fully independent windows 98 in a.... window :)

! never really looked into that, thx. Is it 100% accurate though? I'm suspicious (actually paranoid is a better description) and would rather run on a real 98 machine...

here you go

kev

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Grey Alien Games\My Game\
Creating New Folder...
CreateDir=1
FullAccess=1
Text File Writing...
Done

Edit: Damb, sorry that was for XP. For some reason I forgot I didnt have 98 any more

Not Vista = All the others

Grey: Yup, the virtual Machines are accurate. The only downside is that you're limited to a single type of (emulated) video card and cannot test on multiple video adapters that way.

Same for different soundcards, network cards, etc -- but logic and API-wise it's 100% true Windows 95/98/me/2000/xp/whatever you install.

Kev. Thanks! So to confirm, where did it make the grey alien games folder? On your C drive on in the same location as VistaTest4 (i.e. a sub folder)? thx.

H&K: doh ;-)

xlsior: wow pretty amazing.

Grey, yes 'C:\Vistatest4\Grey Alien Games'

I've only just seen this due to the site being down. You still want me to test this?

Kev: Thanks for the confirmation.

Big10p: If you have time (won't take long) it'll confirm Kev's findings, thanks!

I get the same output screen as Kev but the test.txt file was created in C:\Downloads\Grey Alien Games\My Game. I ran the exe from the Downloads folder.

Excellent many thanks for that dude! This means that my special Vista code doesn't crash legacy OSes.
