Zombie MMORPG

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Zombie MMORPG

The Forces of Darkness gloom over the City of Lights. The Dead begin to rise again. You are among the living and your goal is to keep it that way. To do this you must unite forces with other living Human Beings in destroying hordes of Zombimorphic Monstrosities. That's it. Survive, increase your physical and mental skills, unlock the true Power of the Human Spirit.

G'wah?

If my goal was to stay alive in such a situation, the last thing I'd do want to do would be to unite with other people to destroy hordes of "Zombimorphic Monstrosities". Nah, I'd wave goodbye to the City of Lights and go live somewhere quieter.

By the way, how exactly does one "gloom"?

Maybe he means 'loom'?

That would probably be everyones first reaction, until they realized they would have to unite to fight and survive.

Classic film(s), both the old and the new. I'd love a game where you shoot zombies in comical ways in a shopping centre.

I'm pretty sure that it'd be my first and last reaction, actually. Fighting zombies would surely be a very bad idea for anyone who cared about their own survival.

"I don't want to die. I really don't want to die. So how can I keep myself safe? I know, I'll go fight some Zombies!!!"

See? What kind of genius would come up with a survival plan like that?

Could always pretend to be a zombie. I've seen a fair few zombie films - it doesn't look so difficult.

(Shaun of the Dead explains how to act zombie).

Well, the Zombies want to eat you and are trying to get into your safehaven. You will eventually have to fight to hold them and survive.

Y'all should read The Zombie Survival Guide by Max Brooks. It's g-r-r-r-r-eat! I've just ordered the follow up, World War Z, which is apparently also amazing and which has been snapped up by Brad Pitt's production company.

as jeremy paxman would say:
yyyeeeeeeeeessss

This could make for a good game, but I would have put in a bit more development time before you start showcasing ; )

Skills:
Head stomping
Running
Screaming

Weapons:
Moped
Brass knuckles
Rake

Magic:
Nooo!

You will eventually have to fight to hold them and survive.
Or alternatively you can get in your car and drive away. Isn't that why you bought that SUV in the first place? So you could drive through an army of undead? Just hit the gas and switch on those windscreen wipers. It's not like there's another reason for having an SUV when you live in the suburbs.

Attributes:
* Sanity.
* Fear.

Skills:
* Chainsaw fist - replace your useless hand with a chainsaw - hail to the king baby!
* Cross Shuriken - the skill of using small ornamental (but blessed) crosses as thrown projectiles.
* Kicking ass for the lord - a special form of martial arts designed specifically for zombie annihilation, and practised by all good preachers.

Weapons:
* You should definitely be able to throw rocks. You should have to throw these in a ballistic curve, in such a way that it is impossible to hit anything.
* Vials of holy water - like throwing rocks, except they set zombies on fire.
* Vials of virgin blood - as above only more gory.
* Improvised explosives - no good horror movie/game comes without improvised explosives. Ideally they should be created from things that are inherently unexplosive. Like dairy products.
* In fact make dairy products a weapon as well - maybe some zombies are lactose intolerant.

Magic:
* Bruce Lee summoning. Summons Bruce Lee, 15 minutes later, the town is zombie free!
* Teleportation. Teleport away. To a nuclear missile silo. Initiate launch sequence.
* Self Immolation. Well at least you won't leave a corpse for the zombies to feed on.

Building System:
* Things should be built of totally unrelated and improbable things.
* Recipes need to be discovered. There should be no clues that you need cactus seeds as fuel for a chainsaw.
* Everything needs to have at least one zombie part in it.

Hello.

There's a Role Playing system called 'All Flesh Must be Eaten' which is based on Zombies. And, yes, it includes 'Chainsaw Guy' as a standard character.

Nice.

Goodbye.

I love it!!! Keep em coming guys.

I like the idea of it, but I wouldnt try to get this off the ground in Blitz3D, if you really want to capture the fright of the film genra you need all the visual bells and whistles. Normally I would say its the game that matters, but then trying to frighten people with zombie flicks and games, you need the visual support.

Blitzmax and a 3rd party 3D lib could do it. But then again your talking about a mmo, wich in all existing cases means repeatative and predictable content, thats not scary either, at least not for long. Perhaps thats why there arent many zombie mmos out there right now.

I think that you (FPS) would be better off making a single player Zombie game. I've never seen a decent independent 3d mmorpg made in Blitz, and I'm not sure that it's doable without a large team of developers.

Is this going to be based on your 'pen and paper' dice rolling concept, or are you going for something more graphical? (Or both?)

The only genuinely scary game I've played is the "haunted house" level at the start of Vampire the Masqurade: Bloodlines. Even playing through it subsequent times, when you know for a fact, there is no way you can die, it's still totally scary - and the graphics in that is way dated. I wouldn't discount excellent story telling and gameplay so quickly.

I'm not using Blitz3D No DX9:(.

No. Its somewhat difficult to describe because its moreso a High Performance 2D/3D Game Engine stacked on top of a Text-based MUD. 2D Chat --> 2D MUD --> 2D MUD + 3D FPS --> 3D MMORPG.

LOL, one of my favorite films of all time! Classic! (love the archers radio scene!)

Weapons:
Lawn mower
Garden gnome

They are goin in!

I was being secretly ironic. Besides, they're all more or less ripped off of early Sam Raimi and Peter Jackson movies.

I was being secretly ironic.
I know. Thats the irony of it. LOL.

Zombimorphic Monstrosities

Does this mean that your pet fish can be a zombie too? Or is it all just humans?

Besides, they're all more or less ripped off of early Sam Raimi and Peter Jackson movies.

Well then they're ideal, since most recent zombie movies and games are ripping off Sam Raimi or George Romero. I thought I saw a bit of Robert Rodriguez via Harvy Keitel in the zombie-bashing preacher, but perhaps I'm a little biased since Dusk Till Dawn is one of my favourite movies.

Irony aside, I'm strangely tempted to start coding a zombie guts-a-thon based on FlameDuck's ideas. It's absolute gold dust.

@Gabriel - yeah D til D is great. I hadn't heard anything about it when I first saw it, so I was quite surprised at the change of perspective in the second half! Useless fact: Tom Savini, special FX guy on Dawn of the Dead, plays 'Sex machine' in 'Dusk til Dawn.'

Yep.
