MMO Games..
Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/MMO Games..
I think I have probably played a lot of the older ones, up until the launch of world of warcraft, thats the first MMO to really hook me in to the point of losing interest in all other games.
I was wondering how many of you play MMO's and which ones you play.
I'm looking for a good space based MMO, something where skill is required for the PVP, and not just whos got the best item..
I played EVE Online for a bit, its a really good game, but the main reason I dont like it is the control systems, its crap to be blunt.
So lets talk.... MMO's whats good these days. space ? fantasy ? anything new coming that you guys are waiting on ?
MMO's I've played:
- Anarchy Online (beta tested, was a nasty one)
- WW2 Online
- Motor City Online
- The Sims Online (beta tested)
- Everquest (long time on this one, definately my favorite...but it's dated)
- Everquest 2
- Shadowbane (beta tested)
- Vanguard SOH (don't bother)
- WoW (played for about an hour...hated it)
- EVE Online (not my cup of tea)
Check out Vendetta Online:
http://www.vendetta-online.com/ (twitched based combat, might be just for you)
Keep an eye on this one:

Mozart MUD
World of Warcarft (beta -> March this year)
Darkheart
I'm currently playing:
City of Heroes/Villains.
Tabula Rasa.
Aside from Ultima Online, and watching my bro watch his ship mine for hours on end in Eve Online, I've only really gotten into Final Fantasy XI, which I've been playing since its North American PC release in 2004.
Can't really recommend FFXI in this day and age though unless you like the old-school experience-grind methods employed back then, until WoW changed that and spawned about a 100 knockoffs.
(seriously, the amount of new MMOs that just shamelessly rip-off WoW's interface and 'somewhat casual-play friendly' setup is startling)
EQ > all others.
I played Ultima Online from release for about 6 or 7 months.
Then EQ came out and I played it for about 7 months, quit, came back a few months later for another 2 or 3 months, then quit for good.
Then I played Dark Ages of Camelot for about 4 months.
Then I played WW2 Online for about 2 months.
I played a few betas/trials of AO and Asheron's Call.
Then played ShadowBane for a bit (1 month or so).
Then I played WoW. I played it for about 4 months. Quit, then came back a few month later and strated over. Played for about 9 months the second time. Got a Druid to Level 60, then got bored because I hate going on the Dungeon Crawls that require more than 1 group.
Stopped playing about a year or so ago and have not played any MMOs since. Except for a day or two to just to check some out. Lord of the Rings, Everquest 2, Ragnum Online, etc...
I think I am going to check out the Conan one when it releases.
Yeah TaskMaster.. iv got a similar history although iv played wow for about 3 and a half years.
I have also been watching Infinity, and Jump Gate Evolution, Jump Gate Evolution caught my attention when I read a quote from the developers that said they are ripping off the world of warcraft model, in that their games spec will be low, but anyone with the hardware will be able to rank it right up, and also that their game will also take wow's arcade style of game play.. I like the sound of that, as long as the space battles are more like Freelancer and less like EVE, I think thats where I will end up spending my time.
City of Villians was the first one I've played, nonstop - litterally. Then after 3 months flew by so quick i realized I had to stop...
Then my coworkers got me to play Vanguard...and thank God for it being so crappy otherwise I might end living in that game too.
Hmmm... Jump Gate Evolution. Space MMO...
Yes, if it is anything like FreeLancer, I could go for that. Will have to look into that one.
First MMORPG online
1) RYL Risk Your Life (One cold win a car) Verry good game. thoe it died then it got to be Pay to Play
2) Tibia (Zelda like MMO game)
3) Freeworld online Missing it sooo.. this was the only one i cold take controll and have 5 Pets.
4) KnightsOnline (Got bored )

I worked on football superstars mmo
3) Freeworld online Missing it sooo.. this was the only one i cold take controll and have 5 Pets.
its available again. but not in devlopment :(
The only MMORPG I've played properly was Helbreath. I found out it consumes all your time, so I stopped playing those kinds of games.
I've been mainly playing WoW, I hit level 70 the other week and have lost a lot of interest since then.
I've tried a few other free-to-play mmo's, the type that get spewed out of korea all the time, they're okay, but too similar to each other.
I would consider Guildwars, but it's not a real MMO.
none. i dont like mmos ;)
I don't like MMOs too...
@FlameDuck
How do you find Tabula Rasa?
Played EQ for a while, and WoW a bit.
Hellgate London was fun too. Way too buggy and clunky user interface tho.
Like Andy_MC, I played WoW until I was 70, and then stopped playing. Its a great game but doesn't really allow for casual playing and I need to concentrate on writing my own game. I had withdrall symptoms for a while but feel better for giving it up.
I recently found Runescape though, the free browser based MMO and play that for 30min at lunchtimes.
I played Runescape for maybe a week. Threw it out.
I played Tales of Pirates. Then got bored from it, but I find it a lot more fun than Runescape.
Runescape is like playing something from the mid ninties, but fair play to them, they do well with it, I think they have a million paying users.
The first MMO I played was World Of Warcraft. The interface system probably spoiled me for other MMOs. It's hard to put up with click to move, sluggish mouse pointers, etc, after using WOW. The mindless grinding killed it for me in the end, though.
I've also played Eve Online, Second Life, Anarchy Online, Eternal Lands, and Entropia Universe.
Eve Online was good but the travel time in getting around the universe killed it for me in the end. I think I mowed my lawn while waiting for one trip to finish (and that was probably one of the quicker trips).
Second Life. Sluggish beyond belief, and I rarely saw anyone else in the game. I've gone from a 512kb to 1.5mb connection since I last played it though, so I might try it again and see if it's more responsive.
Anarchy Online. Pointless grinding, clunky movement, jerky and sluggish mouse pointer movement, a cluttered interface.
Eternal Lands. Click to move with a fixed isometric viewpoint (even though the game is rendered in 3d) made for a fairly claustraphobic experience.
Entropia Universe. Basically a casino. Framerate was crap. Graphics were crap. Overall it was godawful.
I like the idea of mmo's but all the ones I tried were incredibly dull.I just couldn't see the attraction when the quests are over simplistic and the most fun you can have is wander around aimlessly killing the local wildlife or collect stats. But there isn't much to keep you wanting to play further otherwise.
The last one I tried was LOTR online, where all you did was activate quest switches, and crowd around main game characters playing the same simple quests as all the other characters.
Was kind of like playing a really dull SP game, only with crowds of other people doing the exact same quests as you, only you don't get to see their dialoge. Very strange.
As far as I am concerned, there is no perfect mmo out there at the moment. The one that comes the closes is Eve-Online.
By its nature its more of a sand-box style universe, the players are the content. However this does lead to problems for the anti-social players out there. Grinding is something that's been much reduced in Eve-Online.
The game only really begins when you join up with other players and try to achieve something yourself as a team. Like me - Pirate of Aridia, Stain and Curse!. There's something great about taking away things from other people who where minding there own business :)
I find them all mind melting dull and simply glorified chat rooms. Personally I'd rather go down the pub... or play Colin Mcrae Rally 2.
I have worked on MMO's in the past and am currently working freelance on APB .
Personally I dislike them . Gimme tombraider anytime.
Having said that the graphics on APB are amazing, though I haven't actually played it yet
This static quest stuff is exactly what p**** me off from current gen MMOs. Its a joke if you have a massive, highly dynamic world and in the end the only "unpredictable" factor is the stupidness of the group members you had to gather to do the larger quests.
I still ask myself why none of the even large games went further with multi scale dynamic quests, ie quests on the local area (village or the like) where they need food and resources depending on their needs and stuff they have, quests on the regional scale and on the "country" scale.
Only wish went that far and sadly it got cancelled during beta (was in it) because other mechanisms didn't play out too well *they messed with the basic item refreshment etc for stuff that players need to survive. It su**** that you had to collect herbs for 2 hours to play mage for 10 mins till you burnt all your herbs again.
Age Of Conan
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RaT8jkkoaXs&feature=relatedIts awsome.. its released 20 may i think.
hmm i wounder if there is a chans to beta test it.
I played Runescape for a while but Jagex got overly concerned with people getting upset because they died and lost stuff. Apparently dying in a game now means serious emotional trauma for a lot of people.
So they turned the economy into an almost communistic model and now you can't kill other players barely at all.
And so runs the demise of the MMO...
I played a game called Daimonin for a while... its an old school iso MMO. Its pretty cool, but not nearly as complex as WoW or other MMORPGs.
Then I got caught up in my projects and ditched MMO's once and for all. The End.
