WinXP DirectShow problems

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/WinXP DirectShow problems

Bit of a long shot this - but trawling through the web and microsoft support site has yealded no solution...

Approx. 3 months ago, my Cubase installation suddenly stalled on loading while trying to initialise DirectX. Cubase had been installed and running fine for months, and I had not knowingly installed anything DirectX related (although I did have AutoUpdate switched on). Eventually the only way I could get Cubase to load was to remove one of its directx-related dlls so that although it complained it could not find the dll, it DID bypass the DirectX initialisation and run (albeit crippled).

A couple of weeks later, Windows Media Player then stalled when trying to play Video clips or wav/midi files, as did Nero Showtime. Shortly after that the Nero Wave Editor stalled on launch - it never actually appeared on screen but was listed in the Task Manager processes list. Wavelab, however, happily loads and plays wav files without problems - as do games.

Believing this to be a possible DirectX problem, I ran the dxdiag utility, which stalled 95% thru its diagnostics. I cancelled it, and ran it again, and received the following at the point it last stalled:

"DxDiag has detected there may have been a problem accessing DirectShow the last time this program was used. Would you like to bypass Direct Show this time?"

Clicking "no" caused another stall, while clicking "yes" enabled diagnostics to complete and report "no problems found" under the DirectX tab. All sound tests performed without problems.

Having looked DirectShow up on the microsoft site, it appears to handle video and audio streaming. Can anyone offer me any clues as to what might have gone wrong with my system and how I might fix it? I have tried reinstalling DirectX, but the installer simply informs me that I have the latest version and nothing needs to be installed. I have also uninstalled and reinstalled .NET 1.1 and 2.0 (since I seem to remember reading somewhere that DirectShow was moved from DirectX into the .NET Framework from version 9.0 onwards?), but this made no difference.

Win XP service pack 2
DirectX 9.0c (August 2007)
NVidia 6600GT (latest drivers)
DSP24 soundcard (latest drivers)

I got DirectX errors when I installed the latest (Oct?) DX9.0c. When I restored to previous level (Apr) all was OK again. This included BlitzMax stuff which returned a HUGE DXError message.
