Guys you any idea how long it should take for a full 4.7GB to be wrote at 16 speed.

look: 16x speed means, that 16 minutes of music can be burned in one minute. now you need to know how much MB is one minute of music and you can calculate it!

I just tried writing a DVD video at 16x, approx 4.35 GB. Setup took about 2 seconds, lead-in took 50 seconds, lead out took 10 seconds, and actual data took about 5 minutes. Total time, 6:02.
5 minutes to write the data would calculate to about 15,200 KB/sec, but Nero was reporting a speed of 22,160 KB/s.
So according to my calculations, either Nero reported the wrong speed, or there is an extra 2 gigs of data written to the disc, or a third possibility is that the writer spends almost 1.5 minutes not actually writing data.

There's also CRC data on the disc, to help safeguard against scratches and such. (some extra bits so the player can detect corrupted data, and (partially) reconstruct it with the CRC data)
Not sure if those are done through the drive firmware or the burning software, though.
some disc formats like VCD don't really use the CRC stuff, which is why they're more prone to errors, AND why you can fit an 800MB VCD-compliant MPEG file on a standard 700MB blank disc without errors.

im writing 16x like TomToad but the lead in is around 35 sec.

I always end up burning at 4x, seems to be a lot more reliable. Particularly if your not playing back on your own machine.

that's why I used to think, until I burned some video DVD onto 16X TDK disc at 4x speed. Absolutely horrible with tons of freezes. Burning the same content at 16x (with the same drive) -- played smooth as could be.
i also have a 8x sony DW-U18A that always wrote at 4x never got it to write at 8x on matter what media i used so then decided to get the 18x pioneer one.
i was told its better to use verbatim media as there superior quality, i do use other media but try to stick with verbatim.
