How much money can a pseudo-successful Blitz3d game make?? Asuming I'm not a fulltime capitalist and selling for $50+

broad question I know :)

Between $0 and $250,000.

wow

Don't get too excited just yet...theres a lot more involved in the process.

Blitz doesn't have much to say as to how well your game sells. You do- it depends on the game, your audience, your selling price. There are many many many influences to it.

The only effect using blitz3D will have will be due to perhaps incompatibility with newer system (Hasn't happened yet but who knows whats going to happen with DX11!) and using lower quality graphics. It has been proven quite a few times though that with the use of external libs, tallent etc, blitz can pop up with exceedingly impressive titles.

Gabriel is bang on the money. However, the lower range could easily be a negative number if you invested in graphics/sounds/music or paid someone (or yourself) hourly for example. And as Cygnus says, yeah it's not the language or it's capabilities, it's what you do with it!

Unless you're prepared to work your ass off and make a plethora of match 3 games and lowest common denominator crap you won't be quitting your day job.

You will however be able to earn enough pocket money to have a nice holiday or buy a big tele every year.

So it's really your choice. Either put the hours in and sell your soul. Or do something you want to do for the love of it, and if you finish it, and then indeed sell it, any cash is just a bonus.

I'm just wondering if I could raise enough money to buy 3ds max 9 with a game actually, so I can start making better graphics and sell them commercially, ATM I only have the student liscence of max 8. I'm thinking of making a 2d puzzle game or something that doesnt involve uber graphics.

OK, well here's the thing...

1. 3ds max 9 won't give you 3d modelling talent. You can product beautiful 3D models with free and/or cheap solutions.

2. Blitz 3D is DX7 so no matter what happens you'll never have 'uber graphics' certainly by today's standards.

However

Well 3ds max 9 is $3500 which is about £1750... So assuming you sell your puzzle game off your own back at £5 a piece you'll need to sell 350 copies... of course, you need to deduct however much you're paying to market it, and however much the host is stealing from you for the pleasure of selling your product (shareit, paypal etc).

So in round numbers let's call that 400 copies.

If you think you're in the slightest bit likely to sell comfortably in excess of 400 copies of a game then go for it.

consider Softimage XSI: Foundation instead. You would only have to sell under 100 units at £5 a time to buy that.

Its used by quite alot of indie game devs too
