Blog - how to do it ?

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Blog - how to do it ?

All,
I have a website, with PHP and MySql support.

I would like to set up a Blog; do you know the best and easiest way to do it ? Are there any pre-made templates to be used with a minimal effort ?

Thanks in advance,
Sergio.

Best would always be to code it yourself since then you have a system that totally fits your needs.

Premade templates.
I don't know, but why don't you check out Source Forge

They have software of all kinds including webscripts.

Of course using Google could also help to find stuff.

Perhaps this one:
Flash Blog

Or this one:
Egg Blog

Or Wordpress. I used that and customised it for my blog on www.GreyAliengames.com and I'm totally NOT a web programmer.

Or just sign up for an account on www.blogger.com

WordPress should be just what you need. Never used it myself but Ive heard good things about it.

Or you can go down the Joomla route.. which is what Ive ended up with... maybe one day Ill actually customize properly or at least find a template less generic to tweak.

Thank you all for the wise suggestions.

I think I'll take too the WordPress route then.

Cheers,
Sergio.

you mean like this template site http://www.on-mouseover.de/templates/templates.html ?

i reccomend such template:

We use wordpress on http://www.Gadgetoid.com

thanks boomboom as I have sign up for blogger :)

I use to use Blogger for a little while but I didn't like how you couldn't tottally customize it as much as I would have wanted it to. The nice thing about it is that its simple to setup and use. No webhost needed since its all handled by google.

Joomla is full blown CMS (Content Management System) and is great for making a full blown site data driven site, but is way too big if you're gonna just make a blog.
Plus I found it a bit way too non-userfriendly, and it isn't really meant for blogging. There are plugins you can find that will allow you to set up blogs though but I never tried them.

Wordpress is definately the route to go. Its freely available and very easy to use and setup. Tons of free plugins and themes everywhere. And since its open source you can customize and hack the hell out of it. Matter of fact, you can even set it up to be a CMS site if need be. The catch is that you'll need a webhost setup first. But i definately prefer it that way anyways. I'm currently using it for my little blog on the Wii : The Wii Effect.

hey Neuro,

that very good but would be cool if you world videos games news ( such as XBOX 360/PS 3/ WII and RETRO NEWS perhap)

cheers

have a look at www.websitebaker.org its quite a nice litle cms, which can blog too

Yah that was my original plan but its a very broad bunch of topics. It sounded good on paper but I just don't have the time and resources to cover all those categories. Thats why I'm just sticking with the Wii for now..

I'm using WordPress for my blog. It has one stupid bug to do with word-wrapping, but it's easy to work around. Everything else it does, it does very elegantly.

The best would always be to use off the shelf software. Like Wordpress.

It has one stupid bug to do with word-wrapping,

In the editor or in the blog itself?

Probably not a bug, more likely to be your own stupidity. Consider this, as if it were a bug, you wouldn't be the only one to notice it.
