Roman Character Pack from Arteria

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Roman Character Pack from Arteria

We have just launched our first in a line of historical themed packs, with the first being the Roman Character Pack featuring a roman soldier, and female NPC. Roman building packs will be available shortly also

The hands seem small.

Show a model (I should say, specifically, the woman) from an angle other than the front. I'd like to see how the textures look at multiple angles, because they probably won't hold up that well.

Edit: Also, the upper arm of the Roman looks very, very weird. Specifically the under-arm and around the biceps.

is that sarah michelle geller?

is that sarah michelle geller?
If so, isn't that illegal?

Looks nothing like her.

Well I ran that image through a celebrity facial recognition website, and it only found 1 match...a 96% match to Sarah Michelle Geller....

...As you might have guesed by now, I am procrastinating.

Hmmm, maybe it's because the heads a different shape then - still doesnt look like her, to me.

I just want to see how horrible the models look when you don't have a front-on view of the details that need front-on views to look the way they should. Like everything on that woman.

No offense but photo copied textures suck...they are so dull,
so senseless, looking so meaninless as they are brainless
zombies.

The woman model says "I'm so desperate and lonely :(" and
the guy says "Hmm, not bad at all"

I think it looks good, better than anything I can do.

Keep up the good work!

Good stuff, but...

The soldier needs a shield and a sword (and a pilum).
The pack needs a general as well as a common soldier.
The pack needs a second female - brunette. (How many blondes do you think lived in Rome at that time? Er, none.)

Noel, i have to ask why you have said the things you have. I mean this comment is a bit much dude -

"I just want to see how horrible the models look when you don't have a front-on view of the details that need front-on views to look the way they should. Like everything on that woman.

There is constructive crit, and there is down right bad comments - and thats a bad comment

Steve

Regading the face of the female, i get a lot of facial photographs from a respected photo resource site which are legit to use. To be honest, i see no resemblance to the person you mentioned

Steve

All of them. Except many of the slaves were probably Moors or Egyptians. But all of the citizens would have looked much like people from Northern Italy do today (blue eyes, blond hair).

you probably need more models for a pack than 2.

e.g. male peasant,man in robe,caesar,cleo

Still, I'd very much like to see some shots which show the faces at other angles than front-on.

Because I don't care about your feelings. You want me to apologize, prove me wrong. You've got the models, show the goods and let's see who's right.

For other fun things, let's see how the models deform, especially the woman's dress.

All of them. Except many of the slaves were probably Moors or Egyptians. But all of the citizens would have looked much like people from Northern Italy do today (blue eyes, blond hair).

The center of Italy was populated by Etruscans (which had dark skin and hair) with a history which goes back to 900 BC, and Rome was founded about one or two hundreds years later.

Since Etruscans were absorbed by the romans only later, in 386 BC, and considered that some of the seven kings of rome weren't even roman (Tarquinius Priscus was half greek and half etruscan, and both Numa Pompilius and Ancus Marcius were sabine - another dark haired culture derived from samnites - to name a few), you can already imagine that the population was heavily mixed.

Given the complex trading routes involved, there was also a strong influence from greece, so that historicians never consider the existance of a real italian race. Later even north africa added to the equation, resulting in a complex mix-up of cultures, even though the latins themselves which inabithated the tiber were from the balkanic area.

Even today if you visit northern Italy you would be surprised to know that there aren't as many blond people as you may expect (blue eyed too even less)... that's an extremely simplistic view, considered that most of the european cultures mixed in that region in the beginning of history, when racism wasn't a decisive factor when dealing with legacies and politics as it was in the medieval era.

Doiron:
That's actually fairly interesting.

Doiron, thanks. My point exactly.
It's all the fault of American television/films... scientifically/historically a byword for assumption and inaccuracy.

So yertari, a general and a brunette?
And the shield, sword and pilum?

"Because I don't care about your feelings."

What can i say to that....

So that's a no on the different angles then?

NO, its not a no at all. It just concerns me how people fly out with comments. Im not adversed to comments at all, i really enjoy getting peoples criticism.

However its quite alarming sometimes, how people always look on the down side of something. I see this time and time again on these forums an i think its sad.

You may or may not like the models i do, but for Noel to come out with the comments he did astounds me, as he went in for the attack on me straight away for some unkown reason. I have scene many content developers disapear over the years, but i have stuck with it and made a growing business, working 16 hour days most times. Do people like Noel not apreciate this. Communities should be more apreciative of content artists who keep at it.

Sorry for diversyfing and normally i let comments go, but sometimes things need to be said.

I will post pictures later today

Also Noel, regarding the deformation on the females dress. Unless your using a physics plugin to coordinate the movement of the dress mesh accodingly, your never going to get realistic movement on such clothing items. I have worked with the mesh with these constraints and the end result is asceptable.

Steve

Some people have painfully over-inflated egos Yertari. Stick with it - not everyone around here plays with themselves in front of a mirror and likes lording it over people from safely behind a computer screen! Keep knocking out the models - if it's not you it's some other person drawing the flak.

I'll give you this much, at least you're sticking at it, and from what I gather you take the criticism very well considering - just keep refining the models.

The problem I saw....

The woman has only one b**b.... well sorry but that make her looks like an alien...

And to be honest, everyone tries to advertising his products here, if you don't like just don't post/comment.

lol, didn't notice the monoboob yet ^__^ (tho me having only 2 hands, this might be an advantage if that was a real situation!)

But I tell ya, that face just keeps twirling around me head, I just know who she is, but I'm not sure whether she's a normal fashion model or a pr0n model. I think the latter. ^_^

Its Sarah Michelle Gellar!

Eery.
What can i say to that....
You could post the pictures already. What's taking so long?
However its quite alarming sometimes, how people always look on the down side of something.
When you ask for money, then you should expect people wanting to know everything possible, and unfortunately I'm one of the people here who is capable of producing the same art as you (probably better, but I'm assuming the low quality is due to the price range).
You may or may not like the models i do, but for Noel to come out with the comments he did astounds me, as he went in for the attack on me straight away for some unkown reason.
Because you make generic models that aren't that well-made in the first place, and yet you act like you're somehow a hero for making them? You're an easy target, what can I say?
Also Noel, regarding the deformation on the females dress. You're wrong, and I can only hope you know this and are just making things up as an excuse to justify your work.

I agree, things can get a bit rough on sellers here. But then again , you knew that and posted your models anyway. Id suggest you toughen up a tab bit. The woman is horrid to look at.

The guy looks alright, but doesnt strike me as a model/texture for a game, hes not rough enough, he looks like my neighbor decided to mow his lawn in his new halloween outfit. I think a few tweaks to the geometry and texture then he'd be ok

I'm your neighbor?

Yes. I didn't say it wasn't. In fact I specifically stated that it was. However while there undoubtedly were dark haired citizens in Rome, the lions share were still Germanic.

so that historicians never consider the existance of a real italian race.
Or for that matter, a real Italy, until about 150 years ago or so.

Even today if you visit northern Italy you would be surprised to know that there aren't as many blond people as you may expect
How do you know how many blond people I expect live in Northern Italy? Last time I was there the distribution seemed fairly unremarkable.

You may or may not like the models i do, but for Noel to come out with the comments he did astounds me, as he went in for the attack on me straight away for some unkown reason.
When did he attack you? Criticizing your art, even to the point of not liking it and openly saying so, is not a personal attack.

I have scene many content developers disapear over the years, but i have stuck with it and made a growing business, working 16 hour days most times.
Good for you. I fail to see how this is relevant.

Do people like Noel not apreciate this.
Why should he? Does he own stock in your growing business?

Communities should be more apreciative of content artists who keep at it.
Why? What difference does it make? If anything content artists who keep at it, should be appreciative that the communities buy their products, so they can afford to keep at it.

Sarah Michelle Gellar with single b**b, is scary, very scary... I'm better off from this discussion :S

I would listen to Noel actually. I've seen Noels work and he can churn out some pretty bad ass characters.

I once made a Cambodian Jungle Soldier. It ended looking like a camouflaged WarDrobe.

:)

Ha! Tho there must be a way better example somewhere..

I like the models. 39$ may be a little too much for them IMHO. If you add some variations (general, brunette etc.) then it's ok.
Remember the gladiator movie armors, pretty cool designs.

The soldiers mimic is kind of strange, probably you need to relax his mouth.

And here's a suggestion for a further pack: the vikings in the movie "the 13. warrior" (or something similar)

What's with the Genom link in your signature being only a dot, jfk?

does genom have english subtitles yet?

How do you know how many blond people I expect live in Northern Italy? Last time I was there the distribution seemed fairly unremarkable.

We were actually talking about 2000 years ago. Not last time you went on holiday.

I think the *original* romans were probably naitively dark haired brown eyed but their society in its hayday was very multicultural due to it being such a widespread empire, so blond blue eyed citizens is certainly not an imposibility.

Good work steve (as usual) i especially like the guys armor. The woman could do with prehaps slightly wider shoulders and some more curves around the boobs and hips area. (but thats just how i like em' :P )

Is it me or is the woman's dress a bit too transparent? I'm sure I can see her white cotton breifs through it, maybe I'm just sex starved from being on assignment in France for too long.

I'm not sure about photorealistic textures, they usually look out of place and fake in games. Also two models on their own doesn't really feel like a "pack" if their were some other models (weapons as has been suggested) or a couple of other outfits for them then it could be more useful.

Noel, you may not care about the OP's feelings but maybe you should care that you sound like a jerk, even if your right. There's a few people on these forums seem to think that their ability somehow gives them the right to talk down to other members of the community, it's high time they got off their self-appointed pedestals. This used to be such a positive, vibrant place and it's all gone.

Darkheart

Just noticed your new thread and rememebered this one. We never did get those different angles, did we?

Yeh, I'd like to see how much she is packing - a side-on shot will be just the ticket.

its dave gorman in a centurian get up
and dave gorman with a shave and a blonde wig :p

sarah michelle geller ??? looks nowt like her
maybe billy piper after a session of beer to fog up the eyes that much ... or after you had two too many and wifebeat her a bit

edit:
and the close up of the woman makes it look like shes pregnant at the chest ???
