Running TF2 Dedicated Server...

Is it possible to do this on a standalone machine without a Steam account?

I'd like to run a TF2 Server but not enough that I'm prepared to buy the game again just so I can run a sever.

They are supposed to have released a Windows and Linux dedicated server but where the hell can I download it from?

If I download it from Steam, can I run it on another PC without Steam?

I've searched the web for ages and there seems to be very little information available.

Most companies WANT you to download and run the server because then more people can play, I'm not sure why Valve arn't making it easier to download and run the dedicated server.

Can anyone point me to a simple "How to" on running TF2 dedicated server?

Unsure about downloading it stand-alone, but I do know under Steam, you can download it under the Tools section, and I assume it doesn't require a purchase of TF2 since I see other games listed there for dedicated servers that I don't own.

I downloaded that but then you can't actually access the files, they are all "Steamified" and if I try to run the dedicated server I downloaded I get the error, "Cannot Mount File System" etc.

what about 1 start server.

2 Close down steam.

3 Fire the client Steam.

(i dont know if this work. you may as well lock the steam account)

The dedicated server totally fails to run WITH a steam account ATM so I don't think disabling steam will help.

Presumeably there must be a distributed dedicated server installation that works somewhere (otherwise there would be no servers) but how can I get it?
