Can't use my ram

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Can't use my ram

I just got myself en extra 1 GB of memory, but my BIOS and Vista only see 1 GB of memory.

My mainboard is an ASUS A8N-SLI SE and I use Vista Business.

Anyone know what I can do to get that last 1 GB to work?

Swap it with the other RAM first - just to make sure it isn't faulty.

Probably faulty... I bought a stick a few years ago, exactly the same type as my original, shoved it in and nothing.

It doesnt help when they package stuff like this up in plastic thats so thick and chewy that you have to attack it with knives or scissors just to pigging open it... PC World are terrible for it!

Dabz

In BIOS it says 4048 BM installed and 1024 MB usable

The memory is compatible isn't it?

Should be, I tried different sticks, all with the same result!

Newer motherboards require the memory sticks to be put in in identical pairs... Are you putting in two sticks or just one?

I tried 4 512 MB and 2 1 GB

Hmmm...

And you are sure you are putting them in the right slots? What slots each set of two get put into matter...

Do you get 2GB from just the 2 1GB sticks?

Or, do you get 2GB for the 4 512MB sticks?

I get 2 GB ether way

make sure there's no setting in bios for "aperture window at 1024MB" or somesuch. If it's on, turn it off. I've seen the same thing you are seeing and it was that setting (or something just like it).

I was just about to suggest AGP apature size too lol.

I have a vein in my forehead that pulses for such an occasion, accompanied by several words that would get me in trouble here. I can never find a damn pair of scisors when i need em and always hurt myself when "improvising". They should brandname it "FortressPak" or "Injury Wrap" :)

I'll try that.
