$100 Laptop to sell to Public

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/$100 Laptop to sell to Public

I just read that for a short time the $100 will be available as a pay for 2 / get one.

BBC News

I was just wondering I BlitzMax would work on this machine ?.. does anyone know ?

I cant seem to get any info on whether the machine comes with any 'easy' programming tools. Id certainly consider getting one for myself if Bmax worked on it.. though the colour scheme is a bit leary. Its looks cheap and durable enough for me to carry around.. and I reckon with that colour scheme no-one is gonna try to steal it from me !

TBH you're probably better off getting a cheap second hand laptop off ebay if you want to do programming work.
The spec for the laptop is very low and would be really frustrating for programming blitzMax.

I can see why people would buy these to just see what they're like, but really it's like buying a 3DO now, you'd play with it for five minutes, then go back to your main PC.

Im waiting out for the $199 EEE PC from ASUS http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tFLJJw6WRqM , it looks like its a lot more functional than this one.
Its a great idea though, charging kids the rich countries double price and giving one to a kid in the developing world :)

Make sure you don't put www. in that link or it wont work. Try event.asus.com/eeepc instead.

The eee pc Sure does look like a nice machine... I wonder how tough it is... The OLPC looks tougher.. and it has both a colour and b&w display.. the b&w being designed to be viewable in direct sunlight. When closed it is also waterpoof ( OK.. I would take that as rainproof ). Overall it is probably designed to be able to take more knocks. The speed is slow... but then again that would make the battery life pretty damm good.. though I cant seem to find any details on battery life. Anyway.. 433Mhz aint that slow.. 33Mhz faster than my
Mac.
Doing a quick google the eee pc does look kinda cool too although from what I can tell the $199 machine will sell for £200 in the UK. Id pay up to 150 quid for it I guess.. but if it goes for 200 then I would have to give it a miss. I know I could import it but when things go wrong you really are up an unpleasant creek.

The OLPC laptop is horribly underspecced for a language like Blitzmax. the only way they could get it this cheap is by cutting corners of their corners.

Also: while originally targeted at $100, the dropping dollar and other realities have adjusted the price upwards a bit. From the article:

...launched the "give one, get one" scheme that will allow US residents to purchase two laptops for $399

Even though they still call it the $100 laptop in the article. :-?

lol.. never noticed that !... hmmm.. $399 eh ?... blimey with current exchange rates that would come out at £399.!

I dont think americans are getting a buy two for 399 deal, its buy two, get one and 'give' one to a kid in the 3rd world if i read it right. As long as the money doesn't go astray and it becomes buy one and 'give' an 'ak47' to a kid in the 3rd world :/

Its a good idea if it goes according to plan.

Umm, no, that's more like £200. But given we live in rip-off Britain, yes the retailers would sell it at £399

I cant seem to find any details on battery life
There is no battery 'life' to worry about, just arm pain, it has a choice of normal adaptor, a solar charger, a crank handle and a ripcord thing so you can charge the battery while sat on a camel in the middle of the sahara if you really have to. Hell, you could tie the ripcord to its foot and you'd have a 'camel charger'!
You just might have a job finding a wifi point tho, unless your camel is wired for satelite :)

Skewze me while i wind up the ol' laptop......
creeek - creeek - creeek - creeek - creeek - creeek - creeek - creeek - creeek - creeek - creeek - creeek - creeek - creeek - creeek - creeek - creeek - creeek - creeek - creeek - creeek - creeek - creeek - creeek - creeek - creeek - creeek - creeek - creeek - creeek - creeek - creeek - creeek - creeek - creeek - creeek - creeek - creeek - creeek - creeek - creeek (etc)

Cool ive got 10 more minutes!

Darn it, Dan, you stretched the page!
