Is the new 2.8 imac the new ZX Spectrum?

OK I finally got my brand new core2 2.8Ghz 24'' imac yesterday, after 3 weeks of waiting.

And now here's the thing that remind me of the old Sinclair ZX Spectrum (rubber key kind)

1) The keyboard look's like it rolled of the Sinclair production line and here's me thinking I was going to get one of those sylish keyboards. Oh well look's like I will have to find a new one then.

2) The iMac it's self gets hot at the top, very hot indeed. Tomorrow I will try and see if I can do a fried breakfast on it ( I could with a 48K ZX spectrum).

3) Installing the "GIMP' with macports is taking for ever (must have to build every piece of software it uses) all I'm waiting for is 'R Tape loading Error'...

Other wise it's ok, just don't like it getting that hot!

I've read horrible news about the 3D performance of the new iMacs under OS X, but haven't read anything about its performance under Windows so far. Have you installed boot camp or do you intend to do so and what is your impression of the 3D performance?

There are at least three different pre-compiled and working OS X versions of The GIMP available (provided that you have X11 installed).

The old Core Duo iMacs also get quite warm on the top. Warm, but not hot as in "frying eggs"...

Mac keyboards suck, especially for 'curly braces langages' programmers.

Haven't tried 3D yet or boot camp (seems pointless as I have a top notch PC with vista), I may dual boot when Leopard arrives.

At the moment I'm just playing around with it just to get the feel for it, then I will give it some real hammer.

Nope, I'm not really into benchmarks. But I have Doom 3 and Unreal Tournament 2004 both for OS X and Windows. ;-)

I only got the thing for 2 reasons

1) To learn about Mac OS X (I already know Windows 9x/2000/XP/Vista - Linux(almost))

2) To write cross platform applications (And I think I will get a different keyboard later)

If you don't like it this hot then you should have bought the 2.4Ghz version as it comes with a mobile CPU instead of the 2.8Ghz model which is a desktop CPU with a different TDP range.

If you want benchmarks for the new iMac then you best watch out for benchmarks which include a HD1600PRO. If you can't find some then you can place it, depending on the test, below a HD1600XT and above a 7600GT but closer to the 7600GT.

Interesting. The german keyboard has it, but it does not have {[]} printed on the keys; you have to find the alt-whatever combination by try and error. Another problem is the @ symbol. Depending on whether I'm in OS X, Parallels or boot camped Windows, it's on a different key... :-(
